Fedora :: Block Or Delete Unwanted Fonts / Installing Software Update 13?
Nov 26, 2010Today Software Update on Fedora 13 listed updates for OpenJDK, SSH protocol, and SE Linux policy configuration. When I clicked on the Install button I was presented with a list of nearly a hundred fonts that Software Update said were required. They were all fonts that I have removed from my computer over and over - fonts for languages that I do not speak and don't want on my computer.
I unchecked the fonts, but Software Update said it could not continue without installing them. Apparently they are dependencies of one or more of the three packages I mentioned above. Is there a way to figure out what package is constantly installing these fonts?
I note that after deleting the fonts I never have any problem with apps failing to run. And if I go to a web page created with a language that requires a particular type of font, Firefox still displays the page with the correct font for that language, even after removing the fonts from my computer. Are they really required?

Jun 10, 2010depending on reading some apparmor docs, I know that apparmor read logs to determine what profile a program will be, that means a profile only can be built when the program have been exec at least a time, or we already how will be executed of a specific program. but if a hack inserts a bad-program such as a back door or virus what should never be executed any time, and at the same time we don't know what's the consequence will happen due to the behaviors of a bad-program. therefore, how could apparmor do to prevent these situations? Can apparmor confine every thing what under a specific directory by default? because use: aa-autodep /path/to/restrict/* is 'complain' by default and everything are allowed, can apparmor deny everything by default?

Jun 23, 2011I have big troubles with new mouse. It works properly in all cases except booting. It is really strange but if I restart the system (11.3), There is BIOS hdd detection, GRUB (I choose oS 11.3), after I can see about three text lines for short time and after only black screen. And system is halted.
If I disconnect the mouse, reset PC, choose in GRUB, I can see text lines, immediately there is a graphic screen, connect mouse and it works until next reboot.

In order to avoid interferences with the installed version, I had first removed the installed version. But now Yast wants to re-install this old version with any package installation or upgrade because it sees unresolved dependencies. How can I stop it to add this packages? Or how can I tell Yast that the hplip packages are installed?

Jun 25, 2010I have a Suse 10.3 router with 4 network cards. 1 is to connect to the big network and thereby also the internet, 2 are for 'client' subnets and I want to use the last one as a DMZ. In this DMZ will be a web server which has to be accessible from the other 2 subnets and from the big network. I could do it with a few simple clicks in Yast firewall, but I have some issues with this firewall and there for I want to use it as minimal as possible, using Iptables.
So now I'm struggling a bit with Iptables. Basicly what I'm looking for is how to block all ports but 80 in this last subnet with iptables.

I burned it with K3B and it gets the same result trying to mount it. K3B seems to know that the image is an iso9660 and is able to display the various 9660 id fields just fine. It just won't mount.

May 23, 2010I currently have a LAMP server running with multiple virtual hosts configured. I have one virtual host with a sub directory that contains pdf news letters.do not want the directory browsable and tried putting an index.php file that re-directshe user to the root directory but when I go to the [web address]/[directory name] in any browser I see the contents of the folder listed.
Currently the news letter list is drawn from a database table and displayed as links on a page in the root directory. The links point to the file name in the sub directory. How do I block users from going to that sub directory and seeinge contents of that directory listed? Would I add another <directory> statement in the vhosts.conf file? If so how would I structure that directive?

May 1, 2010I have trouble with opensuse susefirewall 2 and my own rules. since i have installed a suspicious download manager, i detect outgoing traffic in the monitor and i want to block ougoing traffic except some apps like firefox, jinchess ...
1) I had to modify FW_CUSTOMRULES="" with FW_CUSTOMRULES="/etc/sysconfig/scripts/SuSEfirewall2-custom" in /etc/sysconfig/SuSefirewall2
2) I had to add my own rules in /etc/sysconfig/scripts/SuSEfirewall2-custom in the appropriate hook
3) I don't know if rules are good.. they seem to work because for example jinchess can't access his server with the DROP rule until i add the ACCEPT rule BUT in fact the download manager still access internet and amarok too when it searches for songs lyrics ! i have discovered it's because the others apps use port 80

How to to make firefox use another specified port ? i wanted to use privoxy with tor but it doesn't work .. is there input/output controler on linux (something like zonealarm on XP) ? the trouble is that all outgoing traffic is permitted by default!

Is there something that would tell me about mount points in Yast partitioner? So far I haven't been able to find that information anywhere. I don't want to lose information on existing drives and partitions but do want to be able to access them.Some of them appear under disk information in "My Computer" but if I try to mount them I get this error message.There is no application installed that can open files of the type block device (inode/blockdevice).I was trying to edit fstab,his didn't seem straightforward either. I've been hacking this about in other Linux distros - so not entirely clueless

Mar 9, 2010Is there a way to disable all popup notifications in openSUSE while still having it check for updates periodically. What I would like is for the notification icon to appear when an update is available but to not popup the notification message, or worse, show that dialog stating that some software sources were not available when I'm on the corporate network.
Also, is it possible to disable some updates like the recent KDE one? I right click it and there is an option to disable notification of an update but the menu item is disabled.

Nov 14, 2009Currently running rc2. Downloaded 11.2 final DVD, md5sum is good, burned DVD, YaST says media check is good. (And for completeness burned a second DVD and get the same problem.)
On booting from the DVD I select "Installation" - a kernel loads and starts checking available h/w devices then crashes with the above message.
Followed by Please append a correct "root=" boot option.
Tried with root=sda1 (partition that is /) and only change is unknown-block (0,0)
My best guess is that I have EXT4 (did a clean install of RC2)? And/or I dont have a swap partition?
