OpenSUSE Hardware :: Headsets As Well As Microphone To Make Voice Calls?
Apr 9, 2010
I am looking for an external (usb?) sound card that might work with Linux. I would like to plug in there my headsets as well as my microphone to make voice calls. Do you have anything to suggest that will work fine with my latest opensuse?

I use gmail's Google Voice plugin to get calls while in the mail browser. I have a usb headset attached to my PC that I currently can output my voice chat from things like Mangler to, so I know my setup is capable of routing specific apps thru specific output devices. My issue comes form being unable to find anywhere to specifically set voice traffic thru my headset as I did while in windows. How do I do this so I don't have to quickly change my sound output when a call comes in? Or is there at least some kind of button or toggle to make that change without having to open the sound prefs menu?

I have an ASUS eec901 Linux version with Jolicloud installed. When I dial Skype contacts I can hear and see them but THEY just get static with no picture or audible voice. Skype informs me that I must change my settings from Pulse audio to ALSA using a program called pavucontrol. I must delete Pulse audio, but although i have tried I can see no way to do this.Pavu control does not seem to install either.

I have a ZTE MF112 mobile broadband modem, which comes with Windows drivers and software. This software allows not only connect to Internet, but also send SMS and place calls (as in you dial number in program and when you're connected, sound goes through the sound card). As far as I know, almost any USB mobile modem comes with application to send SMS via its GSM connection. Now the question is - is there any vendor-independent software that runs under Linux and allows you to use your mobile broadband modem to turn your PC into larger mobile phone? I want at least to be able to send and receive SMS using PC + mobile modem.

Does anyone know of a utility that can recognize voice commands using a standard microphone? It shouldn't be a desktop utility, but rather just a program that listens for manually configured voice commands and takes predefined actions. All I really need is some kind of daemon that allows me to record a voice command and map it to a specific file with a bash script. If I can just make that part work, I should be able to use the script to do anything I want.

I have installed Fedora 11 recently on a new system. Sphinx speech recognition was working fine on my old system. When i run the same project on my new system, the system does not respond as it is waiting for microphone voice input.
Then I checked the microphone and have set it properly and its working now. The details how i made my microphone working is at the following link: [url]
Though, I can record and play any sound, but it is not working with sphinx project.

I am building an android, from the source using make command. I want to achieve simple logging while this make is happening.
Aim:
I want to look/log for internal system calls that are being made after i do 'make' command in bash terminal. So that after the make is done, i can look and study the internal method/file calls made while make was happening. In this way i will come to know how the actual building process works.

I have been trying to figure out how to make audio calls in Pidgin. I have enabled the "Video/Voice Settings" plug-in, but do not get any options any where to initiate a voice call. I am trying to do voice over SIPE to Office Communication Server and I am not 100% sure if pidgin-sipe supports audio (I have looked around but can't find any information on features).

I've bought the new AT&T's Velocity/GI461 USB modem. This is a nice toy because into one only stick there are integrated all the features that I need, like the GSM/3G/GPS modules. Googling I've found a good tutorial about how to connect it under Debian and about how to control the GPS data. You can read it going here :

but what about to make and receive phone calls through the SIM card integrated and the AT commands ? Can someone give some help ? I've attached some documentation. Maybe this can be done using Wammu and/or Gnokii.

I have a startup script for jboss (start.sh) that sets some JAVA_OPTS and then calls bash run.sh.If I run it (start.sh) from the command line it runs in the terminal fine. If I make a shortcut launcher for it in gnome and set it for 'application in terminal' it pops up then immediately dies after launch. Not sure what the problem is. Is this not working because one script is calling a second script? But then why does it work when I call ./start.sh?

Does anyone know of a commercial program that will run on openSUSE?I need something that is fairly user friendly, identifies individual voices, and does not require Wine. The machine is to be completely controlled by voice and would be programmed to issue vocals in response to vocal requests for what is in the various databases and I/O software, such as motion control and other sensor subsystems. In other words, a program that lends itself to AI robotics.I do not have the time to develop CMSphinx, and I am willing to pay. I have been on a few sites but they are cryptic as far as the technicals, which I do not fully understand anyway.

I need to write a script. In which, the 2nd part commands need to run under another bash shell environment. The enter_antoher_bash_env.sh will setup a new shell environment, call "bash". The rest commands need to run under the new env. (I cannot change this script too. )If I run these command one by one manually, it works of course. If I put them into a script, enter_another_bash_env.sh won't return because it calls "bash" command inside.

I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.

Mp3s are playing nicely, so does the test sound with Yast. I copied some outputs which you might need to help me figure out whats wrong with my settings.
The motherboard has an onboard sound chip (which I do not use), and I am actively using the PCI sound card (Aureon 5.1, CM8738).
The microphone is coming with the webcam Logitech E 3500 (which worked under 11.1, but updating to 11.2 keeps me without skype functionality).

Ive installed TS3 on SUSE 11.3, it recognizes microphone, but when I try to talk, it captures only noise with segments of words, not understandable at all.. When I try to capture sound by Sound Recorder, defaultly installed in gnome, it works and sound is clear. I tried to play with sound configuration in TS3(trying OSS, ALSA, PulseAudio), but no option helps, its just no input or that crippled not understandable input.

I use skype ALOT, and when skype is open and I'm in a call, no other program that uses a mic will function properly.
An mmo I play on-line has built in voIP, and the voIP only functions properly when skype is closed. (it does not work at all otherwise)
Just as a reference, if I try to use kRecord while skype is open it will give me an error saying that the sound card is busy, or something to that effect.
how should I go about sharing the mic between multiple programs?
