I used to be able to mount my external hard drive's ntfs partition by simply clicking on it, but now I can't anymore... I know that the last time I've used it with windoze, I had to force shut the **** thing down 'cause it was frozen real good (pretty unusual right !?!).The thing is, with ubuntu it sees it and mounts it no problem.

I first noted a few weeks ago I couldn't mount my NTFS partitions using dolphin. At the time I was having problems with windows, so I thought - naturally, they are marked as dirty, no biggie-
However, I still can't mount them and I know they are clean. I get the error: "filesystem is neither well know nor in /proc/filesystem nor in /etc/filesystems" which is strange since I can mount just fine in the console using mount -t ntfs-3g.
I Just Recently Installed OpenSUSE with GNOME Desktop and was surprised to know that none of my NTFS Partiitions were mounted to the Linux File System. Earlier I had Installed Open SUSE with KDE Desktop and there were no problems, everything was readily mounted and i could access the NTFS Partitions. I am a Total Newbie To Linux. First of all: it's been more than 12 years ago since I worked with Linux, and a lot has changed in the meantime. But I considered it a challenge to install Ubuntu 9.10 and lateron upgraded to 10.04 LTS without any troubles, until now:
Except my main partition ("/") all other partitions fail to mount. All NTFS partitions from my other OS and also 2 other linux ext4 partitions I've made are not accessible anymore. and, what bothers me the most: I deleted those 2 new linux partitions in the meantime because I couldn't access them initially because Root was the owner (Duh! root is standard disabled in Ubuntu, right?). After an attempt to try to automount all partitions following the help guides I got now big grey errors on my splashscreen while booting, telling that an error occured with e.g. /media/Backup because it is missing or it cannot be mounted, with 3 options below: waiting, skipping or using a command prompt to solve this. I always choose Skip for safety.
Now if I want to see the content of all my other partitions I got a popup telling me unable to mount e.g. /media/Downloads and the message included:

I am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?

But this only happens when using my custom kernel (2.6.32.24). When I use the kernel which was automatically installed (2.6.32-5-amd64), the problem doesn't occur.
Is there a kernel option I should have turned on?
I checked the UUID-numbers from the error messages with the output of "blkid" - they match. The rootfs is on sda2 (which gets mounted without error) - so I tried applying the fstab mount options of sda2 to the other partitions - same problem still. what makes the root partition so special? Is it because it's defined by grub.cfg?

I am doing major deployment of opensuse 313 pcs from windows to opensuse. I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.

On my laptop I have Windows and Ubuntu, and I use Ubuntu very often. How can I auto-mount the NTFS partitions once I run my Ubuntu without the need to manually ask to mount it and confirm with the root password each time and for each partition?

I have U1004 dual boot with MSW7 and sometimes want to mount those NTFS partitions for mostly reading operations. Ubuntu makes it easy by a single click in Nautilus. How to change this behavior and allow mount NTFS partitions with user's password only, like sudo behavior, for example? In addition, how to mount them read-only?
Note: I mount those NTFS partitions occasionally and there is nothing in fstab about it.
Nautilus mounts NTFS partitions when I acces them, and before mounting, it asks for root password. Is there a method to auto-mount ntfs partitions on Debian startup, without requiring root password each time they are automatically mounted ? And without installing additional packages.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two ntfs partitions I use to store music and data. I've been using them in all my linux boxes without any problems. Simply use Ntfs-3g with noatime and everything works great.
However, since the update to OpenSuse 11.3 writing to my NTFS partitions takes FOREVER. I've specified noatime, relatime and norelatime successively without success. The partitions have plenty of space and are defragmented.
When copying large files, It starts fast at first, but in the last hundred MB it slows down to about 1.5MB/s. Even after the transfer is supposedly done, the HD led remains on and all other read/write activity involving the partition is completely halted.
This can take between 5 minutes to 10 or more depending on the size of the file. When copying several small files, (100 MB or less) it starts at about 1.5MB/s from the beginning.
I have the latest versions of fuse and ntfs-3g installed
I'm new to OpenSuse 11.2, In Yast partitions configurations, I've mounted all NTFS partitions successfully without ticking "read-only", and according to this webpage: NTFS - openSUSE I checked my fstab file, there's no "-ro" in the file. But I still couldn't write to any mounted NTFS partitions, I can't do paste file, can't save changed files into NTFS partition.

I have a mounting rack in which I try to plug in various HDDs. Now, all of them have vfat. Blkid returns something like:
/dev/sda7: UUID="4B16-F1E8" TYPE="vfat" The UUID looks abnormally short to me. I found no way to obtain a longer, typical UUID, and when I set Yast2 partitioner to mount by UUID, it sees and it successfully uses the short UUID. Yast2 even adds it to /etc/fstab like this: UUID=4B16-F1E8 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 However, this short UUID is useless in /etc/fstab. It doesn't work at boot time and it doesn't work when I try to mount manually. xxxxx:~ # mount /windows/C mount: special device UUID=4B16-F1E8 does not exist. Also, one cannot find these short UUIDs in /dev/disk/by-id/.
For a billion reasons, I really want to mount these FAT32 partitions by UUID. Do I have any way to do it?
I have a Windows partition encrypted with TrueCrypt. If I start TrueCrypt (or RealCrypt) I can mount the partition through the GUI. before I encrypted the partition I used to auto-mount it at boot using fstab and it would appear in my places bar in the file managers.
