OpenSUSE Hardware :: Twinview Second Monitor No Wallpaper?

Feb 24, 2011

I'm running the latest versions of openSUSE and KDE with latest updates installed. I have an nVidia GTS 250 video card with two monitors hooked up. Initially SUSE recognized my second monitor just fine. However, after installing nVidia's own driver (to quiet the loud noise of the card's fan on high) following these instructions, my monitor is only usable after I go into the nVidia X Server Settings (from terminal, as root: "nvidia-settings") and configure it to TwinView.

All is well and good (I can move windows over to monitor 2), except that monitor 2 has no wallpaper (I'm new to KDE, does this mean that monitor has no desktop activity?) and the X Server configuration is not persistent. When I reboot I have to change the X Server settings back to get monitor 2 recognized again.

I tried looking for the X Server configuration file (xorg.conf, right?), in order to replace it with the edited version, but could not find it.

Ubuntu :: Twinview - Monitor On VGA Is Flickering

Nov 11, 2010

Recently i've installed 10.10 and have a problem with flickering screen on VGA. I have 64-bit release, ge force 210, nvidia propietary drivers and two monitors:

- AOC_1920*1080_60_DVI
- Philips_1280*1024_75_VGA
- nvidia-current, 260.19.12, 2.6.35-22-generic, x86_64: installed

No matter which monitor is attached to VGA, it flickers randomly every couple of minutes. Sometimes it flickers when i use mouse or keyboard, but sometimes it flickers by itself.

Ubuntu :: Configuring My Xorg.conf With Dual Monitor - TwinView

Jul 1, 2009

I have a dual monitor setup (Twinview), both monitors are connected to my 1xNvidia MSI NX8600GT card...I've been using a 21.6inch HannsG HG216D (herein referred to as HG216D) monitor as my LEFT monitor, and a Dell 1905fp (herein referred to as 1905fp) as my RIGHT monitor.

I recently got rid of the 19inch 1905fp Dell monitor and moved my HG216D to the RIGHT and now I have a new 23inch DELL S2309W (herein referred to as S2309W) on the left. The new S2309W is connected to my computer via DVI cable and is configured Perfectly at it's native 1920x1080 resolution.

However I can't for the life of me get my HG216D back to it's native 1680x1050. The HG216D is connected via VGA cable that is also routed thru a KVM, I realize this means that this monitor can't/won't be auto-configured. However I should be allowed to set it manually right?...

Code:

Won't let me select 1680x1050 for the HG216D resolution, it will only let me select 1440x900 MAX, there is no option for 1680x1050, (See attached: screenshot)

I've tried to manually edit my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but after hours on end messing with it, I give UP...

Here is my current xorg.conf:

Code:

I am just not sure what I need to change and how to get the second xorg.conf to play nice via a VGA connection?

OpenSUSE :: Wallpaper Over 2 Monitors In KDE4 - SuSE 11.1

Jan 2, 2009

I've just installed SuSE 11.1, and have so far been able to get my dual monitor setup to play nice. Both monitors are operational, and function fine from an application point of view (3200x1200 res), but KDE refuses to display my wallpaper over both monitors. In fact, I cannot set the wallpaper for my second monitor at all (it's stuck to the default green SuSE wallpaper or a fixed color). As a side effect: widgets also refuse to be moved from one monitor to the next. Applications can be moved fine, even put half on one monitor and half on the other, but the widgets and the wallpaper refuse to cooperate. This worked fine for me with SuSE 10.3.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Triple Monitor Setup: X Crashes When Moving To The Second Graphics Card (third Monitor)

Oct 22, 2010

This is a triple-monitor setup with two video cards, where the mouse pointer gets "stuck" if it tries to cross from one video card to the next one. It worked correctly in openSUSE 11.2 and doesn't work in openSUSE 11.3 with the same xorg.conf. This is a 64-bit openSUSE 11.3 with xorg 7.5-11.3 (the openSUSE prepackaged version). I've already tried NVidia drivers 256.53-16.1 (the openSUSE NVidia repository version) and 260.19.12 (the latest off of the NVidia website).

This is the same xorg.conf that I used successfully in openSUSE 11.2. I tried a new automatically generated xorg.conf using nvidia-settings and it had the same problem. This forum won't let me upload the relevant files, but here: [URL] is a tar-ball with my xorg.conf, Xorg.*.log, /var/log/messages, and the NVidia debugging output.

Even tried installing the driver " the hard way " dual monitors come up, setup xinerama to "Extend" my desktop , and the main monitor ( right side ) is good, visually the left monitor (2ndary) is good.. but whenever I move my mouse over to the left screen the mouse pointer dissapears, flickers along the right hand border of that screen... and if i move the cursor back to the original screen i have to really fight to get it back to the main screen....Copy of my xorg.conf , still very basic...

Ubuntu :: NVidia Twinview Not Working?

Jun 17, 2010

I have no idea what to do to get Twinview to work. I had found a bit of code to paste into the xorg.conf file but after I pasted it in and restarted my computer, but it wouldn't boot up. Whenever I open up the "Monitors" dialog under System>Preferences, it doesn't even see that the second monitor is there! It doesn't matter if I go to the default tool or if I go to nVidia's tool. On the nVidia tool, under X "Server Display Configuration", there is a button "Configure...", when I press it, it asks "How should this display be configured?". The options "Twinview" and "Disabled" are both unselectable and the only one that I can select is "Separate X Screen". It's almost like my computer doesn't know that I have a second monitor plug.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04.

My xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NvAGP" "1"

Ubuntu :: Compiz With Two Monitors Without TwinView?

Feb 4, 2011

Here is my question:

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 (32bit) on an HP compaq nc6400 laptop (internal display is 1280x800, graphics card is an Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express) which I am using in three situations: In my office: external monitor (1280x1024), laptop in docking station with lid closed At home/on travel: as it is, without any external monitor When giving lectures: with projector (1024x786), lid open, same output on projector and internal display As you see, I either want one output device only or both showing the same output. Additionally, I want to run compiz. My problem is that, whenever I (1) connect an external display or (2) when I press the Fn+F4 key to change displays or (3) sometimes even when I open/close the laptop's lid, the system at some point switches to TwinView which seems not to work with compiz on my system. The effect is that compiz is deactivated. When I want to have it back, I have to open the appearance settings and change to extra visual effects again. Unfortunately, that reverts compiz to default settings and I have to adjust my compiz settings again. note that compiz works properly in all three situations I listed above. The problem is "only" that, at some point, it switches to TwinView.

Is there a way to tell X or compiz NEVER TO CHANGE TO TWINVIEW?

Ubuntu :: Twinview & Maximizing Not Working Correctly?

Apr 18, 2011

I am having issues maximizing windows/applications on triple monitor setup. I would like to maximize wine, folder explorer, media players, and etc to one screen, instead of across both, which it is currently doing that. Using Separate X [xinerama] + twinview, but I have also tried without xinerama + twinview. When maximizing applications and such, it will only maximizes across both of the monitors in the twinview setup, not the separate X on the left. The separate x has maximizing working to that one screen. I have tried to add xorg tweets, but that's not working, and they are currently in my xorg post below. I had maximizing to one screen working perfectly with dual monitor setup. :S And, I am currently getting an error about " Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0""

The following Xorgs show the differences, I guess if there is one between maximizing correctly to one screen.

Triple Monitor setup, maximizing across both twinview monitors, not preferred:

Code:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 260.19.06 (buildd@yellow) Mon Oct 4 15:59:51 UTC 2010

CentOS 5 :: Can't Get TwinView/DualHead Display To Work

Jun 4, 2010

I have 32-bit Windows XP and Centos 5.5 x86_64 on my dual-boot PC, equipped with two generic LCD monitors, Dell (primary) and HP (secondary). I have been running dual screen displays without any problem when running Windows, however no luck getting them to work when I boot up with my newly installed Centos 5.5

In both Gnome and KDE both monitors light up, but secondary monitor (HP) is just a clone of the primary. I have tried setting "Dual Head" in the Display adminitrator but the resulting xorg.conf causes a "Entity is already in use" error and crashes. I have also tried just adding Option "TwinView" "on" but it does nothing. (Are "Dual Head" and "Twin View" exactly the same concept?)

What I am doing wrong? I checked the FAQ and did not find any similar problems being discussed.

Ubuntu :: Control Of The Compiz Twinview Maximize Function

Jun 28, 2010

Im running a dual monitor setup in gnome, with the closed nvidia drivers in twinview mode. most of the times i want to be able to maximize windows to a single monitor (this is the default behavior in 10.04 lucid i believe), but sometimes i want to span a window on both screens. compiz doesn't allow windows to resized past screenborders, and gdevilspie wasn't able to get past this.

After a lot of googling and toying around i came up with the following sollution, i'm posting it here so other people can enjoy it as well (and i'll be able to find it again after my next install).

I made a script to switch between the streched mode and the doublescreen mode to use it, you'll have to stop the autodetection of the outputs in compiz. this option is found in compiz config settings manager under general settings > display settings or though the gconf-editor in /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/detect_outputs

This script switches between the two modes, but you need to edit the resolutions of your monitors! (i have a double 1280x1024 setup)

Code:

My way of using this:
1. use the script to switch to the span mode
2. start photo/video edit software
3. work
4. close the software
5. use the script to switch back

General :: Display - Turn Off Monitors Individually With Nvidia TwinView?

Feb 15, 2010

I frequently watch movies on my computer, but I have two screens. So having something displayed on the other monitor is annoying.

I currently use this to turn off my monitors:

xset dpms force off

I was wondering if there's any way to turn off monitors independently, without having to physically press a button on the monitor, of course.

A program that tells the other monitor to display nothing but black would suffice, but I'd really prefer not to waste the power.

I also have Nvidia TwinView, so applications like grandr aren't aware of both monitors as being independent.
