OpenSUSE Hardware :: Soundcard Not Detected?
Mar 1, 2010
My sound stopped working! (after a fresh install, explained below)I just installed the latest release of openSuse. Right after installing, I ran the updates tool and got all recommended updates. All fine.I then installed my ATI catalyst drivers. Rebooted a couple of times. All fine.Everything was working 100% (including sound), I then rebooted, now something is wrong. Now my sound is not working, I right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar, and to my surprise my soundcard is not listed like it was just before. It used to show up as an X-fi card, which was correct.
In Yast, I go to sound, and in the hardware section, there is nothing there, my soundcard is not listed. I tried to add a soundcard in Yast, (creative xfi) but it wont install, I get some IRQ error.I'm all out of ideas. I'm a new to using linux, but I know my way around the console.I have trolled through the internet for hours to no avail

I'm using an external Cambridge Audio Dacmagic with F12 and Amarok. This worked great, until I upgraded Fedora this morning. The Dacmagic does not appear anymore in the Multimedia Audio Systems settings, only Pulseaudio is shown. However, in my hardware info widget, the Dacmagic does appear? This is shown as "C-media USB Headphone set". Now I'm totally lost. I did restart Fedora with the Dacmagic on, I did restart the Dacmagic with Fedora running, but nothing changed.Any good suggestions on what I can try next--- Post added at 04:47 PM CST ---------- Previous post was at 03:05 PM CST ----------Isn't the net fun? Poking around, I found I could try "lsusb". The output gives:

I was using alsa, but then reverted temporarily to pulseAudio due to a minor issue. Later on, I did remove pulseaudio through yum. And that was the end. No matter what alsa/pulseaudio version I install or reinstall...
[NetGh0st@localhost ~]$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found...
[NetGh0st@localhost ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
[code]....
It does not find my soundcard, and I have a nasty feeling that the whole sound module was removed ... i don't know, may be from the kernel...

I was listening to music and decided to check update manager, and after the install I reboot and then POOF, sound is gone, I checked Alsamixer and got "no such file" did aplay -l and got that there was no soundcard found, which I officially can say is bull, since, I DO have a card, hahaha. I am running a HP G72 and already went through the comprehensive check and kinda got with seeing which driver matched my card*EDIT*
heres some info I forgot to post

New install of 11.2 with KDE 4.I have two soundcards in my system, one on the motherboard and a soundblaster. I multiboot and all FIVE other images, including SUSE 10.1 with KDE 3, use the soundblaster so that is where the speakers are plugged in. 11.2 insists on configuring the motherboard sound card for KDE, even when I do a fresh install setting the soundblaster as the primary sound card at installation time or when I remove the motherboard sound card from the configuration after installation. KDE 4 never even lists the soundblaster as a known card. Any way to fix or work around this restriction?

I have 2 soundcard - a M/B built in Intel AC97 and an old Aureal (later SoundBlaster). This is because there's a problem with Intel's microphone in XP. So I use Intel for playback and Aureal for recording.
Now, how do I duplicate same setup in Suse (to avoid switching plugs) ? I am a bit lost in where to specify hardware to be used for recording and playback.

Recently I installed a new soundcard to my computer, and I don't have any sound anymore in Linux. Now I have in YaST two sound chips, one AC97 and my soundcard Asus Xonar Essence STX. Obviously Linux detected my soundcard since the custom driver called "Virtuoso" is there. However, my soundchip has still the slot 0, and my soundcard is not configured yet. And here I'm stuck, because:
1. when I tried to delete the AC97 entry, YaST hangs (actually y2base or something like that, the sound subprogram). Alternatively, I tried to just disable the driver, but this wasn't possible (unlike with Windows, where you just click a checkbox).
2. when I tried to configure my new soundcard, the configuration program got stuck again - with every of the three alternatives (fast setup, normal setup and custom setup or so).
I also tried whether the old soundchip is still working, plugging in my headphone into the output of the AC97 soundchip, but I didn't hear anything, so system sound really seems to be broken.

I have the problem that for working properly my soundcard needs sort of re-initialisation after every reboot (11.3, 64 bit). I have to change a setting in the sound module of yast that causes the yast to rerun its final steps. What is not working otherwise is audio playback from a usb TV-stick (recording is no problem, same as playing an audio/video file). any idea what might be the problem? how to call the final steps of the sound module of yast from the command line, I could at least put that call into boot.local to avoid having to call yast.

I got some troubles with my external VGA output of a Notebook. I tried various things (see below) but now I ran out of ideas. I studied the sticky post in this forum about configuring graphics cards but unfortunately this gave me no new hints. My System:
Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E Series
OpenSuse 11.3 (i586, 32Bit)
Graphics: Intel 965GM
I found lots of questions and solutions concerning the 965GM but they all are just about configuring the VGA monitor/screen in Xorg.conf.d / xrandr. I'd LOVE to do so but in my case the VGA outout isn't even detected for some reason (please see details below) Summary of my findings up to now:

I have been using Fedora for a while. I decided to upgrade, and that I wanted to do a network install, but I didn't want to go for Fedora 14 when 15 comes out in a couple of months, so when I found openSUSE 11.4 was released this month, and also supported a net install, I decided to go for that. Yesterday I downloaded the net install CD. I burnt it from Windows. It burnt and installed successfully. When I got into the system this morning, it doesn't detect my DVD drive at all. There is no device for it in /dev, nor is anything shown by /usr/sbin/hwinfo --cdrom. When I insert a CD/DVD, it (the drive) detects it, but does nothing more. If I boot to Windows, it works fine. It is connected properly (I built it myself, and upgraded the drive about six weeks ago). The DVD drive is a LG GH22LS50 SATA one, connected to the SATA3 port on a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 motherboard.I found this in dmesg:
Code:
[ 1.528777] ata2.00: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
[ 1.528789] ata2.01: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)

I have 2 physical 500 GB Sata drives/stripes that appear as 1000 GB C: drive under WinXP. I have partitioned that drive into 750 GB Windows native C: and an empty 250 GB partition F:
When running the installer for OpenSuse 11.2 only the physical drives appear in the list of available hard drives 2x 500 GB (= sda and sdb), rather then the partitions of 750 and 250 GB (would expect sda1 and sda2). Is it possible to install Opensuse on the 250 GB partition (F: under windows) without destroying the WinXP installation and data on the C: partition?

I just installed 11.4 and I get an error when I try to boot, "fsck failed for at least one filesystem". It's referring to sdc2, which is my /. This drive is a 1.5gb SATA drive, and it may be that this drive is very slow to initialize. I used to have a problem in Windows where this same drive wouldn't be detected after waking from sleep, so I had to apply a hotfix patch.
I tried manually fsck-ing, but the drive isn't detected at all. Maybe some way I can make it wait longer for the drive?

Just discovering Linux. Couldn't expect everything to work right away, of course. I has some issues with the x11 (the GUI wouldn't show itself), but have gotten around that. Next is WLAN. I have a Motorola USB stick whose chipset i've identified as the Ralink T2501.
It won't show up in YAST as a WLAN adapter, but does in the USB devices attached. I've procured what the sticky advised, and this is it:
HTML Code:
40: USB 00.0: 0000 Unclassified device [Created at usb.122]
UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_148f_9021_noserial_if0
Unique ID: CiZ2.Q1gxt8A0_KF
Parent ID: uIhY.3f5c44ENLJ9
[Code]....
Anyway, i've downloaded the necessary driver (rt73), but don't want to leap into installing it before i consult you guys. Where do i go from here?

I have a D-link dir-635 firmware v. 2.30eu (latest) and a USB WLAN adapter D-link DWA-140 802.11n. The driver seems to be installed correctly since lsusb lists it correctly and all the wireless networks in the vicinity are detected including mine. When I try to connect however NetworkManager says it is activating but after awhile the windows with the newtork password appers. dmesg output:
[ 5509.487262] wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:1c:f0:71:03:88 try 1
[ 5509.684014] wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:1c:f0:71:03:88 try 2
[ 5509.884020] wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:1c:f0:71:03:88 try 3
[ 5510.084014] wlan0: direct probe to AP 00:1c:f0:71:03:88 timed out
So it is able to determine the AP:s mac address but each time it times out.
I have tried disabling the security on the router but no luck.
Not sure what to try next. I have checked some of the tips supplied in these forums but none seem to handle the issue I am having.

I use OpenSuse 11.1. My graphic card is an intel Q43/Q45 chip. I was instructed to update my xorg and mesa packages in order to make on application work (it was crashing my x server). After I did so, x wouldn't start:
intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected
Screen(s) found, but none having a usable configuration
Now I am stuck with vesa if I want to have x running at all. I tried reverting to the versions of mesa and xorg I had before, when everything worked, but to no avail.
What can I do? (I am by no means an expert and that I don't know linux very well, and even less openSuse... just has to use it at work....)
