OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB 3.0 Portable Drive Not Detected?
Jun 5, 2011
I have a 1TB USB 3.0 verbatim portable drive. When I connect it to my IBM Thinkpad R500 OpenSUSE 11.4 does not detect the drive as being plugged in. All my USB 2 devices work fine. Do I need to configure something to get this drive going?

I'm a recent convert from windows machines to linux. From the first distro I tried I was blown away by how great linux is. But opensuse, while it has taken me a little bit longer to figure a few things out, has by far the best. It even allows me to configure my touchpad so it doesn't drive me insane. On to my actual problem. the portable harddrive placed all my files on to when switching from windows mounts but shows up empty.I know the files are there because they show up when i plug the harddrive into my ps3.
I put the all the files i wanted to save from windows into a folder called portableharddrive (i think) and put that folder on to the portable harddrive.if i do a directory search by running the drive in terminal this is what i get.Can anyone help me find my files or do i have to wait untill my girlfriend gets her computer back?

After plugging in my mp3 player to usb it isn't detected, even though it powers up and charges. I do an fdisk -l and nothing. My lspci shows the controller and my mouse is detected. lsusb shows the Phillips gogear as the device and it is device 2. I did dmesg and at the end it showed
scsi 6:0:0:0: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery
I don't know if this is the issue or not but it's the only error I get, so I assume it's the problem.

I have been using Fedora for a while. I decided to upgrade, and that I wanted to do a network install, but I didn't want to go for Fedora 14 when 15 comes out in a couple of months, so when I found openSUSE 11.4 was released this month, and also supported a net install, I decided to go for that. Yesterday I downloaded the net install CD. I burnt it from Windows. It burnt and installed successfully. When I got into the system this morning, it doesn't detect my DVD drive at all. There is no device for it in /dev, nor is anything shown by /usr/sbin/hwinfo --cdrom. When I insert a CD/DVD, it (the drive) detects it, but does nothing more. If I boot to Windows, it works fine. It is connected properly (I built it myself, and upgraded the drive about six weeks ago). The DVD drive is a LG GH22LS50 SATA one, connected to the SATA3 port on a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 motherboard.I found this in dmesg:
Code:
[ 1.528777] ata2.00: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
[ 1.528789] ata2.01: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300)

I removed my old 160Gb laptop drive to install a new 320Gb drive. The 160Gb drive is partitioned as follows: 20Gb unallocated partition, 115Gb ext3 partition (running ubuntu 10.04), and 5Gb swap.
I placed this drive in a portable enclosure so that I could retrieve data from it. The Disk Utility in Ubuntu recognizes the drive but the partitions are not recognized, shows unknown and the only option available is to format the volume. If I place the drive back into my laptop, the drive boots normally and data is accessible.
I have connected other portable USB drives and they work (NTFS formatted), so USB ports are not the problem.

I have spent the summer and just got my few must-have Windows programs over to Ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit), got it customized with Docky (under Ubuntu Classic) and everything is SWEET. (But don't get me going on Unity dock). One problem: if I boot with my 1TB portable hard drive plugged in Ubuntu will recognize it. If I plug a portable drive in after the boot, I get this error below. I tried Mounting manually and with Archive Mount

I'm trying to mount a seagate portable hard drive. I can mount this device on my other machine except for this machine wherein every time I put the device, it was not being recognize. The led of the portable device just keeps on blinking. When I do fdisk -l, I don't see the device. When I do dmesg, I found the ff:
I used to mount this hard drive before and it was doing fine except last month wherein I cannot mount it anymore. I don't want to reboot and use LiveCD just to backup my files because other people are also using this machine (its a samba server). I tried to use other usb slot but still the same. I'm using CentOS 5.3 minimal installation. i tried to modprobe -r uhci_hcd and modprobe -r ehci_hcd and command again modprobe ehci_hcd and modprobe uhci_hcd but still the same.

KDE SC 4.4.3
Linux 2.6.34-rc6-29-desktop (from KERNEL:HEAD)
HAL 0.5.13-4.2.1
udisks 1.0.0.git20100224-11.1
ASRock G43Twins-FullHD LGA 775 Intel G43 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Samsung 22X DVDR DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223Q (connected via SATA. detected as: /dev/sr0)
Discs are read by the drive when inserted (they are spun and the LED light on the drive lights up) but nothing happens after that.
I disconnected the SATA cable and tried a new SATA cable on a different SATA port and also tried a different SATA power cable but that did not fix anything.

If I have Ubuntu installed on a USB drive and run it on a PC (not installing to the PC...just running the Live version), is anything at all written to the host PC's hard drive? I don't want the host PC's hard drive to be written to at all for security purposes. I'd be using Firefox, LibreOffice, and other apps that come with the Live USB version.

My portable hard drive (WD My Passport), which used to work correctly now does not automount on my Ubuntu system. It does work on a Windows machine or even when plugged into WD HD TV, which is a Linux based device. There's one NTFS partition spanning the whole drive. When I plug the disk in, I see the following in dmesg:[269259.504631] usb 1-2.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 20[269259.604674] usb 1-2.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choiceHowever it does not mount in GNOME and I don't see it when I type:sudo fdisk -lAny suggestions why this might be? I repaired the partition using chkdsk on Windows, so the issue is probably not filesystem related.

I have a portable version of Firefox on my USB flash drive. It is really SLOW. I have turned off all of the disk-caching options and have even set it to not remember my history. I only have three addons: NoScript, Adblock+, CS Lite. I could even get rid of CS Lite and manage my cookies totally manually if it means I'll have a faster GUI. Almost every time I interact with Firefox in any way I have to wait a few seconds and I get that damned spinning beach-ball (did I mention it's the OSX version?).

I have three drives: 2x320 and 1x1.5TB. On one of the 320's I have Ubuntu and on the other I have Win7. The 1.5TB drive is NTFS and I can access it from within windows no problem.
The problem is that Ubuntu does not see it at all. In Gparted it does not show up in the drop down list on the top right. In Disk Utility it doesn't show up either.

I'm using a kingston data traveler. I've only used it on windows before. The drive doesn't get detected automatically so I tried this command mount /dev/sdb ./mnt_point
which gives me a message saying to specify the filesystem type after some googling I found out it probably uses fat32(other types didn't work) But if I try
mount -t fat32 /dev/sdb ./mnt_point it says it doesn't recognize that filesystem type. Anyone got a fix? I wish it were as simple as it is on windows

I have 1tb Seagate Freeagent NTFS External HD. I have Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 with dual boot as Ubuntu. I'm primarily a windows user, since i'm not that well acquainted with linux. External Hard Drive does not detect- when i connect it..it just gives a whirring sound and the "My Computer" window hangs. Figured out the cause- and temporary solution- The drive should do principle mount automatically. It won't if the file system is not "clean". That is possible if the drive was connected while you hibernated Windows, or if you did not properly disconnect the drive.
I booted with ubuntu and did the following-
sudo fdisk -l
and got the following:
Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000204884992 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x396e2b4d
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 121601 976760001 7 HPFS/NTFS
Then I typed:
sudo mkdir /media/FreeAgent
sudo chmod 777 /media/FreeAgent
And wrapped it up with editing fstab with the following code:
#FreeAgent USB Drive
/dev/sdf1 /media/FreeAgent ntfs defaults 0 0
Now the browser window for the freeagent hard drive pops up and I can access everything. I try to shutdown the computer but it won't as long as the hard disk is connected. So I have to pull the usb out. And the problem remains the same. I want the hard disk to be detected normally on my windows/linux (like normal usbs work-plug it in and it works). Also have no clue how to work a temporary solution like this with windows yet. I have boot with ubuntu everytime and repeat these steps when I want to access it.

Been using Ubuntu to extend the life of my hard drive. I'm not very familiar with the inner workings of Linux, but I know computers well.
My System:
- Ubuntu 10.04, gnome environment. Dual boot XP.
Problem:
- my external drive, WD essentials 2.2 TB, stopped working recently, about 6 months after installation of dual boot.
Facts:
- still detected, though SMART does not detect it.
- XP still detects it - cant access files though. *
- Ubuntu now detects a floppy drive, which I do not have.
- power still working.
- have tried a few different USB cables.
- happened around the time of several software updates. Maybe paranoia.
- had trouble with music playback.
Hypothesis:
- Drive is dying, cuz XP wont allow me in. *
- Something happened and it rolled back the drivers on the External HD.
- Somehow losing Voltage, though I dont know how. **
Have attempted:
- Disabling Floppy from bios.
- In Windows: disabling XP service pack 3, disabling Firewire 1394.
- Different USB cables. **
- Disconnecting all USB devices, except External HD. **
