General :: Windows With Putty Via USB Serial Cable To Serial Port - Output Ok, Input Isn't?

Jan 13, 2010

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0

in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but

cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

Programming :: Streamout Command To RS232 - Send Something Through Serial Port?

Aug 5, 2010

I want to send something through the serial port, for example

[code]...

the point here is send some numbers to a couple of 7 seg displays, so I will wire a RS232 chip on a protoboard, the logic after the RS232 is not an issue, but how can I assure the data is being sent right from my linux box to the RS232 chip, the one on the protoboard? Do I have to write a C program to read the strings and then send them to the serial port? For example if I wanted to send this to the displays:

[code]...

So I guess the simplest way is (Supposing I can deal with the stream so it is filtered and only display the number array) $ ifstat > /dev/ttyS0 But, how do I know if the RS232 will take them as the right characters?

Programming :: Rs232 Serial Port Programming?

Jun 1, 2010

I have been working on writing a small rs232 driver like minicom for months. I am almost there, I have the interrupt service routine running, I can read() ok. However when I write(), it returns the number of characters written, 1, but nothing is actually written out the port. I researched termios, and they say that serial port programming is really messy in linux/unix.

I am probably not setting up the port parameters correctly, or my write() function is not doing what it is supposed to. As I said, write() is returning successful. Other comm programs run ok (picocom & gtkterm) on my hardware. I am running knoppix/debian on an ancient computer. I saw other guys using slackware.

Ubuntu Networking :: Serial Cable Crossover Connection?

Oct 13, 2010

I've been reading too much and understanding too little. What I have: Lucid laptop & desktop. Both have ethernet > hub > internet. What I want: connect them directly by the serial ports so the laptop can access the desktop's drives, and the desktop can be retired from the internet. I've got an old DB-25 null-modem, last used for multiplayer Doom. The laptop's dock has DB-9, so the connections is desktop > null-modem > Belkin DB-25 - DB-9 cable > laptop.

I had hoped this post would get me somewhere:[URL].. No such luck. When I ping 'grin.local', the connection is through the internet. If I disconnect the hub, i cannot ping.

Dunno if there's something more I should do to enable serial connection in Lucid, or if my null-modem is no longer good. I'm also rather curious how "grin.local" manages a connection through my ISP's system. These are DHCP. Shouldn't that have required the full numerical IP?

(It's nothing to do with the hub. Checked that by connecting a third box to the hub. My ISP only hands out two IP. I couldn't ping the third box.)

Ubuntu / Apple :: EMac And IMac File Sharing With Ethernet Cable And Other Cable?

Oct 12, 2010

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:

Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive

That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

Debian Hardware :: How To Get Old Serial-touchscreen To Work With USB / Serial Adapter

Oct 9, 2015

I am hoping to be able to get an old serial-touchscreen to work with a usb/serial adapter. I had this touchscreen working some years ago on different hardware. I would like to hook it to the machine I am setting up as a multimedia host with mythtv among other things.

Following the instructions I left behind when I got this to work way back when does not work. See [URL] ....

This info is a work around to get the xserver to see the touchscreen. [URL] ....

I do know that the touchscreen works as I am able to get garbage on the screen as in the first part of my howto. But I have not had any success getting xorg to see it. I wish I had posted a copy of the xorg.conf at the time, but......

There is an issue with the current xserver in testing that I am hoping the next update (in unstable) will fix when it gets pushed to testing. That is that Code: Select all# X -configure fails with a segfault. So I am not able to generate the xorg.conf needed to get it to work. I was going to post a bugreport, that is when I found out there is an update in unstable, so I am waiting for it to get pushed at the moment.

Anyway I am hoping that I can link /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/tty0 and get it to work. I would like some kind of guess as to my chances of success before I go to all the work of getting the monitor hooked to the host.

General :: Use A Rs232 Device That Uses The Usb Port?

May 18, 2010

been trying to use a rs232 device that uses the usb port. it calls for a virtual com port to be created. i am running on ubuntu 10 and get hella confused with the search results i have come across.some call for the usbdevfs which apparently doesn't exist under lucid. another had me do use some "magic" in getting it to work.they provided a script mountusbfs.sh

Code:

#
# Magic to make /proc/bus/usb work
#
mkdir -p /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs

[code]....

of course when i tried it the domount command doesn't exist so i modified the above script replacing the domount with mount and it seemed to do something things. usbview is specified as the determining factor whether or not you have the usbfs mounted properly. it wants to use proc bus and ubuntu doesn't use that anymore apparenlty. i have read that i need to enable a usbmon (flag?option?) in the kernel to be set. which it isn't when i followed the steps to check.

It works OK if I substitute /dev/ttyS0 with an ordinary file, but any attempt to use /dev/ttyS0 seems to lead to an empty answer string. I tried this on a PC under Ubuntu Linux 7.10.

So I open putty/minicom (rs232 display) and can see and interact with the ARM linux system through my PC. The ARM root fs is on a USB pen, So I cross compile on my PC, then plug the pen into my PC copy the exe into the home/usr etc folder. Then unplug. plug it into the ARM boot the ARM and from my PC rs232 window can run the code. However plugging/unplugging is taking an age, I'm sure there must be a way to transfer the exe across the rs232. I've tried to use putty minicom to do so throught various methods xmodem etc but don't seem to be able to. I think I must have to do something on the ARM end but am unsure what?

OpenSUSE Network :: New Cable Modem Kills DNS

Nov 13, 2010

I got a new cable modem so I could get rid of the one I've been leasing from the cable company. It is a Motorola sb6120. Everything is fine with the ISP, it's approved for operation on their network, the only hitch was I had to use my Windows laptop to run their activation software.

At any rate, with the new modem installed, I hop on my Linux box and go to work. I'm seeing some terrible delays in looking up names. When I look with firebug, all the dns lookups for new names are taking 15+ seconds. First I just think maybe the names aren't cached or something is weird for a minute and it will get better, but no. After several restarts and then a couple days persevering with the new cable modem, all DNS queries are still terribly slow (including zypper, mail client, web client).

Suddenly I remember an issue I was having with, I believe version 11.1 when I first installed it. For just the computer on my network with a fixed IP address, DNS resolution was slow like this and if I disabled IPv6 then all was well. I believe there was even a patch issued back then for gethostbyname() that was supposed to fix the issue? So, when I disable IPv6, DNS lookup is back to normal. The two Linux computers on my network had been working fine with IPv6 and the old modem, though, and the Windows box is still working fine even with the new modem.

I can disable IPv6 and make it fast again, but really why should I have to?

OpenSUSE Install :: Force 80 Pin Cable Detect On Cdrom?

Oct 16, 2010

I need to force 80 pin cable detect on my cdrom. According to the kernel-parameters.txt file you can do this by using libata.force=(port).(device) 80c Here is the actual explanation from the kernel file: libata.force=[LIBATA] Force configurations. The format is comma separated list of "[ID:]VAL" where ID is PORT[.DEVICE]. PORT and DEVICE are decimal numbers matching port, link or device. Basically, it matches the ATA ID string printed on console by libata. If the whole ID part is omitted, the last PORT and DEVICE values are used. If ID hasn't been specified yet, the configuration applies to all ports, links and devices.

My question is where do you find the proper port.device numbers? I'm guessing it's lspci but I'd rather be sure before I do something silly.. An actual working line for a cdrw as master on the first ide channel would be excellent. BTW my cdrw is detected as sr0 so the normal "ide" boot params won't work....
