I recently installed Lenny and used the "Guided - Use Entire Disk" option.I made separate partitions for root, /etc, /var, /home, /usr and swap.I trusted that the auto partitioner would choose sensible sizes but possibly that was a bad move, root is only 340Mb and is full.

So I tested to copy 1GB file to root, but in the middle says disk is full, but there should be 1.8GB free if I type df -h.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was recommended to create separate partitions for root, home and swap. I was told that 15GB would be enough for a root partition but I am actually running out of that space very quickly after installing a few programs.
I wanted to resize it so I loaded up my live cd with Gparted and It won't let me resize it by more than 1MB. I also have at least 30GB of unallocated space on my hard drive so I don't know why I can't use it.

But, I realize that my Windows system demands more hardisk space at this time (I planned to have just linux installation in my laptop after graduation, because some of my academic task still needs Windows platform). How do I resize my linux root partition? I don't want to try erasing my linux partition, cos I will start everything over and I just don't have that enough time. And I know it will erase the boot loader, then I have to recover the MBR that is still looking so risky for me.

During install process I assigned only 6GB for my root partition and now I'm almost running out of space. I have 11.1 installed and I wanted to update to 11.3 but there are problems with i855 video card with newest distro versions so I won't install it. Since everything is installed and configured I don't want to install 11.1 again.

I need to make my root partition bigger to add more free space. Is there a Linux version that will fit on a small usb flash drive that has the tools I need? I plan to boot a Linux distro from a flash drive in order to resize the partition.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI few months ago I was forced to do a fresh clean install of Karmic becasue my root partition (then 80 GB) was full. I shooulkd have used a LiveCD to resize partitions then but I didn't so when I installed Karmic this time I ended up with a 160GB partition for /.Color me surprised when last night I got a message that / was at less than 5% free space.
1. I routinely do a apt clean so the cache is not an issue.
2. I do not store backups on /. I use rsnapshot to same backup on an external hard drive.
3. I use Virtualbox but all my hard drives (VDI) are on /home.
I am having trouble logging into my ubuntu 11.04 desktop. When I type my username and password to login my screen goes blue, as if it is going to next show my desktop wallpaper, but then it loops back to the login screen. I had no idea why and so I went to ALT-F1 and typed in "df" and it turns out that my root partition is full. This is strange since I set aside 40GB for it and I didn't install anything or that many programs that would fill it up. Anyhow, is this fixable by booting to a live cd and using gparted to make root bigger or is there a better way to fix this?

i built a rpm package, which i figured out later that i wont be needing, so i deleted the rpm file and also the build package put together they were abt 5.8 GB... but my system monitor shows that only 700MB of space is available the 5.8 GB is not visible but its gone
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to resize (increase) LUKS partition. I have found a lot of manuals, but they are just for LVM volumes(I dont use LVM and I dont plan to use it). I have HDD splited to the 4 parts:
sda1(/)
sda2(LUKS)
unalocated
swap
I want to increase LUKS partition, by using the part of unalocated space.
BUT I dont want to do the following:
Backup data from LUKS partition
Delete LUKS partition
Create new bigger LUKS partition
Restore data to the LUKS partition
What will be an easy and safe way to resize partition? Boot up the LiveCD? Or can I run resize2fs while OS is running?This is a newly installed box without files on /kvm. Now I want to resize /home taking up the complete capacity of /kvm which will be removed/deleted.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Debian for my best friend by resizing his Windows partition so that I can install Debian on a separate partition. But, I get this message when I try to resize Windows: "for some unknown reason impossible to resize this partition. Check /var/log/syslog or see virtual console 4 for details." I do not know how to check virtual console 4 for details and besides I won't be able to interpret it. I also tried defraging the Windows hard drive several times and using several livecds with GParted to try to resize. They all failed.

System Configuration:
I installed jessie on a laptop with one SSD. I used guided partitioning and selected the whole drive with multiple partitions. The /home now takes up 420 GB. I would like to reduce that to 20 GB to make room for another partition.
What are the methods reduce this partition?
I think my root drive is 100% full causing strange problems with my video server. What steps can I use to see what's taking up the room on the drive and perhaps identify files that can safely be deleted?

I had been copying "vmkd" files all of which are very large (11gig) each and later deleted them and it appears some I had deleted using "root" I reached a point when it couldn't do it and it said it couldn't because trash bin was full. Sure enough I found my root partition (20gigs) was full. I went root and emptied its trash bin which freed up about (4gigs) of space. I just set up a new system (11.2) on another drive and have setup it up with exactly the same programs as the system I'm having a problem with and the new systems root partition only has (6gigs) in the root partition. Question; how do I clean out my problem root partition?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?
I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm booting to Kali 2.0 live from USB and wanted to add persistence, but I can't get OpenVAS setup. The setup script runs and eventually fails due to no more disk space. Here's my df -h output:

When the setup runs it fills up root (/) which is only 872mb. This is a 16gb USB so I'm wondering if there's a way to allocate some of the 11gb of unallocated space to root? I couldn't tell how to do this with gparted, would I need to build a custom Kali iso or something with different partitioning?
I have an Acer Aspire Netbook running a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu Netbook Version (Lucid Lynx if I am not mistaken?) Anyway I plan on selling this netbook and I need to remove the Ubuntu Partition and go back to just a full Windows Xp partition with it's recovery partition also.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Linux Mint (LMDE) on another partition and I guess I need to do some 'fixing' so I need to mount the partition. I can't, though, not by just clicking the partition (obviously?). I assume this is because I need root access to mount it.
how I can do this?:
1) CLI - mount via CLI by mounting at some point - for e.g., mine is /dev/sda3 so mount as ?
2) Use an 'editor' or file manager - such as Dolphin - how would I do this?
3) Use a Live CD/DVD - I think this way is unnecessary but it's a way, right?
Anything I missed? I guess gparted could mount it?

I need to exit the xorg.conf file which is recently really messed up.
i use a 3rd party boot mgr.i installed jessie over etch on my old computer & only choice i saw for grub was sda & sdb where i wanted to install on sdb9.i tried installing it from my wheezy partition & it did but i ended up with 2 boots to wheezy.so i went back to etch.
my question is how to get grub on sdb9 like it was on etch.is there a trick or did i miss a prompt? on another note, that bug where the format hangs if you try & install over an old system is a little irritating. can't believe it hasn't been fixed.
The RAID level 1 interested me because of its redundancy in both drives. And I successfully made it in a couple of partitions. But, I always did it after Linux installation. Then, I create both partitions, use 'mdadm' to create raidtab and RAID device (md0, for example) and then I format the RAID device with 'mkfs' and mount it.
Until there, it's all OK.
But my problem is to mirror ALL the hard disk, inclusive root partition. To do that, I guess I need no Linux installation, then create the RAID (md0, raidtab, etc) and after that install Linux in RAID device created.
But I'm new in Linux world and I have no idea how to do that.
I use Debian Lenny, so I need a solution that uses only the first DVD of this distribution.
Is there a way where I can take like 50GB from my home folder (I have 375 avail., but using only 22GB) and put it to the root partition? Twice now my system has almost ran out of space on root, so luckly I was able to clear out old stuff so I don't have login issues after finding the hardway the first round lol. I just want to make sure I can login with out being forced back out because root don't have space to let me login.
