OpenSUSE Hardware :: Recent Updates Killed Operation Of Canon MP 460 Printer
Jun 7, 2011
I have been running my Canon Pixma MP460 for years on suse linux. Worked fine also after upgrade to suse 11.4. I was running MP460 using MP160 drivers as per some forum information when 460 drivers were not available. Some recent updates, however, have killed operation of my printer. Will not even print a test page. I have tried my old MP160 driver and variations of same and new MP460 drivers from CUPS-Gutenprint.
Consistent error message is: "The PPD version (134566257) is not compatible with Gutenprint 5.2.7."
I downgraded and upgraded CUPS. I have deleted and reinstalled many printer drivers for MP160 and MP460. I have run the "cups-genppdupdate.5.2" per the error log message and other cups update programs in the same directory. Keep getting same message. Printer works when I reboot to windows 7 so hardware has not failed.
System is: Suse 11.4 32 bit w/usb mp460 printer.
Hate to bid farewell to my old faithful printer.

I am running sid. A few days ago I ran an update which killed 3D. I followed this thread to get 3D support back. However I failed to hold those packages so I suspect a subsequent upgrade undid all that work. Now what is happening is that I do not have X starting at all. These are the relevant nvidia, mesa and xserver files installed
ii libgl1-nvidia-alternatives-ia32 270.41.19-1
simplifies replacing MESA libGL with GPU vendor libraries (32-bit)
ii libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32 270.41.19-1

ii nvidia-installer-cleanup 20110515+1

Yet when I run lsmod I get:

I am missing something obvious in all of this.

If anyone else is having problems with their HP Photosmart (c4580) multifunction after the latest updates, here's what I did to get mine working once again -
1. Uninstalled hplip (ALL versions including standard AND packman), this also automatically uninstalls hplip-hpcups (which seems to be the cause of the problems) and automatically re-instates hplip-hpijs instead.
2. Remove all installed printers in Yast and also check on http://localhost:631 to make sure they are all removed.
3. If you have (as I did) lots of annoying test pages spooled and waiting to be printed, reboot now to (hopefully) get rid of them.
4. Disable your firewall (through yast) and add allowed service - cups. You might want to restart it, but to save time/frustrations/headaches/smashing your computer and printer out of frustration I would leave it disabled until you have successfully achieved a test page printout!
5. Download hplip-3.9.6b.run from here - HP Linux Imaging and Printing and follow the install instructions. It should eventually bring up the GUI interface where you can detect your printer.
5a. If it doesn't find your printer in the scan, then you are most likely going to have problems. Make sure your firewall is disabled/allowed and that the printer is actually reachable (ie by ping or the web interface). If still not reachable, then you need to find out your printer's IP address and enter that in a browser and get it's hostname.....

I am interested in acquiring a Canon MP620 printer scanner. I am looking at the printer list from linux.com, and I don't see it there. Wondering if it works really good with Opensuse.

I just downloaded and installed openSUSE 11.2. It looks good. Very fast and extremely stable.
My problem is that I use a 'Canon MP280' Printer / Scanner / Copier.
It seems that my printer and openSUSE are not compatible.
OpenSUSE can't find Canon MP280.

I have just installed OpenSuse 11.4 on my old desktop Compaq Presario, I coming from an amount of experience with Linux, anyway, for the moment I have a problem with my printer connected on a domestic network, this printer have an assigned address as the same as for my desktop and all other devices of this network, but I'm not able to connect with it, if I try to connect the printer by USB I haven't no problem, more strange is because of the printer have got a scanner and I was able to connect it via network, the same problem I had with Ubuntu.

I recently installed openSUSE 11.2 on a computer with a Canon i860 printer attached to it. Previously this computer had Ubuntu 9.10 installed on it. When Ubuntu was installed on it, the computer found and printed on the Canon i860 printer just fine. When I installed openSUSE, the list of Canon drivers did *not* include the Canon i860. Just for giggles I selected Canon BJC 4000.
It prints, but it "misbehaves" - For example, if I want to print a document that says only "Hello world", it will print it, but it prints it about 20 times on one sheet. I figure this insanity is caused by the improper driver I selected. I'm not expert enough to know how to get this printer working. And - why would it work okay in Ubuntu 9.10, but not openSUSE 11.2? Did I do something wrong while installing openSUSE?

Have updated my system to 11.4 (Fresh install) and installed the driver from canon, and when you print the test page, it prints fine. But it now when I want to print a pdf or web page where it will say printer data error on the printer. Another thing is that it seems to print fine when the document is plain text like if I print a document from libre, it will print or when i send a print test page. Also when the document does not go through, the cnpkmoduleufr2 sits in memory and then chows 50% of cpu. In 11.3 worked beautifully so am thinking that this is a software issue.

When I try to set up my printer a Canon Pixma MP530, there is no driver! Only the Generic ones and they don't work. On Ubuntu using the Pixma MP500 driver works just fine, but there is no option for that on suse. Only for HP and Generic. The only solution I have found was turbo print, and that costs $30. I am hoping to find a solution, I really like SUSE, but I may have to go back to Ubuntu.

I need to install the driver and I downloaded the Canon install package. The instructions read:
# rpm -ivh [file name of common module for CUPS drivers]
This rpm package construct was used in the Fedora distro.
Does it also work in openSUSE?
The only other construct given was for a deb package.
I looked in YasT for the driver but it was not there.

Completely new to Ubuntu, basically never used anything but Windows before, hadn't even had a chance to properly test out Ubuntu before I broke it. So, sorry if this question is very easy...or if I'm posting it in the wrong place...
Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.
Am currently running my Karmic Koala from LiveCD...

I have a canon pixma mp640. Under opensuse 11.2 64 bit the printer worked (printing and scanning via wifi). I recently reinstalled my system with 11.3 64 bit, and after installing the canon rpms and creating the printer I get the following error in /var/log/cups/error_log:

In opensuse 11.2 I needed to create some links:

Bought a Canon all-in-one (printer, copier, scanner) today, which prints beautifully on XP & connects to our WiFi without problem. Only downside, is it can't find a driver for Linux. Anyone out there using this printer under Linux, or any pointers to the right driver?

I've been a Windows users since waaaay back when (ahh...Windows for Workgroups 3.1). I've tried Linux in the past (Mandrake many years ago), but didn't feel it was quite ready to be a Windows substitute for me.A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu (10.04) and installed it in a dual boot setup with Windows XPSP3. All seemed to be running well, until it came time to install updates in the Update Manager. First an update for GRUB, which promptly killed GRUB and left me with "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported" message and a GRUB prompt. After booting up the Windows XP install CD, I was able to rewrite the MBR and get back into Windows.
I deleted the Ubuntu installation and reinstalled it, making sure I didn't allow it to update GRUB after finishing up. The other updates listed installed fine and I was able to dual boot with ease.Another round of updates were listed yesterday when I booted up in Ubuntu, I made sure not to include the GRUB update, downloaded and installed them, rebooted and was faced with "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported" again. Argh. Once again I had to pull out the Windows CD and run FIXMBR to resolve the boot problem.I'll admit to being tempted to just go back to Windows completely (while not perfect, atleast I can get it to boot after updates 99.9% of the time) and forget the idea of running Linux if I'm going to be faced with having to reinstall the OS everytime because something killed the boot loader.

I am trying to get Canon MP250 printer and scanner working in OpenSUSE 11.3 and so far I've had limited success. Both components work up to a point, but aren't fully operational.First of all, I installed the drivers from Canon website for both parts of the multifunctional device. Here's the report on the versions (it's localised, but it shouldn't be hard to understand ).
The printer works for the most part. But it fails to set images to greyscale when I request the driver to. There are some guides about that for Ubuntu, but none for openSUSE that I could find. Also, what does the setting "Amount of Extension" in the printer options do?It would also be nice if I could set the printing quality as well. Right now it seems to print everything with the default quality setting, but personally I like using lower print quality since that saves ink and makes it a little faster.
The scanner, however, is hardly usable at all. If I try to use Canon's ScanGear MP to scan, I can hear that it operates the scanner, but the program itself freezes and after a while gives me the "Cannot communicate with scanner" error. On certain settings I can also hear that the scanner itself doesn't complete the scan (the indicator on it also reports an operation in progress, but it never gets completed). If I try to use Acquire images, the native KDE scanner application, I can get it to scan, but only on very specific settings: it must scan it in colour and the resolution must be equal to or over 300 dpi. If I try anything else, the resulting image file is completely blank or I get an "Error during device I/O". And, of course, it can't save PDF files.

I have a canon printer which was working so far. After my latest upgrade its giving errors saying "Printer not connected -- Check your connection" Fortunately I had a backup of my root before the upgrade and one difference I see is that on the new system theres no /dev/usb/lp0 which there is on the old one. So how do I make it? Or should I use the /dev/lp0? Note they are different:
[Code].....
So (naturally) when I tried to make a softlink from /dev/usb/lp0 to /dev/lp0 it did not work.

I'm completely new to Ubuntu and only installed yesterday for the first time. The install worked fine. After booting it asked me to install updates. I did this and now when I boot i get:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common Problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules: ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/blah blah does not exist. Dropping to a shell Now I've tried searching through the forums and I've seen people with similar problems however none of the solutions suggested to them have worked. The only thing that may work if it is explained to me how to do it is in Grub 2 it is looking for a UUID. Now I tried editing this on startup to /dev/sda5 instead and it loads. Only thing is I read that this is temporary and would have to do it each time which means it's a workaround not a solution. As I explained at the start, first time of using Ubuntu and so far haven't been particularly impressed as I have another problem with the processor being used up by loads of 'udevd

Anyone else notice that the recent updates have trashed Swiftfox? Here's the error message: Quote: MozPlugger: Error: Too many types (32) for handler 22 (application/vnd.sun.xml.writer:sxw:OpenOffice Writer 6.0 documents)
Opera, Seamonkey and Firefox all work fine and if I open Firefox and then open Swiftfox, it's working just fine, so apparently FF handles the OpenOffice, etc., issues for it. It still fails if you have opened Seamonkey or Opera first.

After not having used Ubuntu for a few months now, I want to make up a new LiveCD and possibly a bootable USB. The times I have done this in the past, the installations don't include recent updates which need to be downloaded and installed once the system is running. (Understandably)
Two questions:
1) Does Ubuntu update the downloadable ISO periodically to include recent updates?
...for example: Now that it is January (ie. some 3 months after release of Karmic in October '09 and some 200-300Meg+ of updates required since that time), will I be downloading an ISO from Ubuntu that has recent updates already as part of it, or will it still require updates to be downloaded and installed once Ubuntu is running on the computer?
2) If the downloadable ISO has not been updated since Oct '09, is there a way of making a LiveCD/bootable USB that has up-to-date updates already installed? (if you know what I mean?) ....and is this process relatively simple?

I was quite pleased to see that Ubuntu 11.04 now loads and reads the contents of my iPhone 3GS.
(Once I connect the phone to my netbook, Shotwell and Banshee would recognize the cell-phone and give me options to manage my data.Alas, that joy has been very short-lived. As of the most recent updates, something appears to have 'broken' this functionality. [TODAY's DATE: Monday, 30 May, 2011],
Now when I connect the phone Nautilus fails to mount it, and I consistently get the same error message:
"DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error. NoReply:Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"

I did a yum update to install quite a few updates to my Centos 5.3 x86_64 system. Updates included kernel and xen which required a reboot. It must be a month or so since I last updated. The updates seemed to go fine - but when the machine restarts it goes through the bios screens which seem to detect all the hard drives etc - but then the word "Grub" appears at the bottom of the bios screen - and the system hangs. It doesn't appear to respond to keyboard input. The system is using linux raid in case that is relevant.
I am able to boot a centos5.2 live CD and look at the Logical volumes - and all appears in order to my untrained eye. I have also mounted the /dev/mdo as /tmp/bootx (boot volume) and had a quick look at /tmp/bootx/grub/grub.conf and /tmp/bootx/grub/device.map and again - I can't spot any obvious problem. I note that before the updates - my default boot was "1" and now it is "0" though this appears reasonable because the xen and non-xen images seem to be listed in the opposite order to earlier updates. I have set it to boot non-xen by default - and this has always worked in the past.
I realise that the recent updates may be a coincidence - and whatever is wrong may have occurred earlier. I cannot think of anything I have done which could have broken grub though. I can probably restore my boot volume to the state it was before the updates. I should have a backup from this morning - as luck would have it. Is this a safe thing to do - or do I need to restore both boot and root to keep them consistent. I would prefer not to restore the root system unless I have to - as this would cause some data loss. However I need advice as to whether yum and other things will get confused if the boot volume is restored in isolation.
