OpenSUSE Hardware :: Intermittent I/O Performance - Hung In Uninterruptable Sleep

May 20, 2011

I am fairly new to opensuse/linux and have been running into a very intermittent I/O issue that I can not seem to pinpoint the source of. Just about any program that deals with any significant IO will fall into uninterruptable sleep. For example here are two instances of dd. The first time it hung in uninterruptable sleep and the second it was completely fine and performed as expected.

[Code]....

Monitoring disk I/O with iotop indicates normal performance for most of the time then all the sudden the read/write drops from ~60-80MB/s to 1-2MB/s. This happens for just about any program I run. It is not easily repeatable since it seems to randomly happen. My limited knowledge led me to believe that it could be a symptom of the old SLED 10 OS that i was running so I upgraded to openSUSE 11.4 earlier this week with no change. I have changed the journaling to ordered and the I/O scheduler to deadline as well as cfq to no avail.

OpenSUSE Install :: Hung On Searching Partition In Raid Using System?

Aug 8, 2010

I've been trying on new installation for opensuse 11.3 on Intel P55 raid5 configured system, one non-raid disk for boot device, a raid5 array as data device. However, installation always gets hung on Searching Linux partition step and I was able to see the vgscan process was the last command to run. Is it a known bug? Does anyone have the same issue as mine?

OpenSUSE :: Intermittent Lockup / System Freeze With 11.3?

Jul 19, 2010

I've just installed OpenSuse 11.3 on my two Sony Vaio VPCF11Z1E machines (which have a Geforce GT 330M graphics card). Both machines appear to setup correctly and behave normally, but at seemingly random intervals (of the order of magnitude of 15-30 minutes) the whole system locks up for no readily apparent reason. I can still move the mouse pointer around the screen, but I cannot click on anything, and the whole keyboard is unresponsive (including any reasonable ctrl-alt-xxx which might normally help). The only way to get out of this seems to be to press and hold the power button to shut the whole machine off (which is not ideal!)

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.3 Intermittent No Sound In Amorok After Using Firefox?

Oct 30, 2010

Intermittently after using Firefox for watching You Tube etc, you find that there is no sound from Amarok and probably all other sound applications. Sometimes while using Firefox for multimedia playback ie You Tube the sound gets stuck ie (repeats the same few millseconds of sound ad infinitem) like a stuck record (for those that remember them). One solution is to reboot the system, however a quicker method is to stop & restart the alsa sound system.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Iwl3945 Intermittent Drops With Network Manager?

Jul 20, 2010

Installed openSUSE 11.3 over an existing 'very stable' 11.2 installation and started experiencing wireless connectivity issues immediately. Network Manager would show connected 100% - 92% but I would lose connectivity to mail, browser and messenger(s). This disconnect would last less than 30 secs but would occur every 2 to 4 minutes.

dmesg reported:

[ 3663.672098] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: Failed to get channel info for channel 3 [1]
[ 3664.101085] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: Failed to get channel info for channel 3 [1]
[ 3664.529050] iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: Failed to get channel info for channel 3 [1]

BTW Channel 3 is the channel my wifi is broadcasting on. I've tried other channels and other computers and it is only openSUSE 11.3 having an issue. I am also using WPA2. Modifying the Global Options in Network Settings from User Controlled with NetworkManager to Traditional Method with ifup seemed to stabilize most of the issues, but I do notice occasional drops. I've also switched from Network Manager to wicd to provide some UI while dealing with this issue. Since iwl3945 drivers are now in the kernel I don't know if I should try to revert to an older driver or if there is another issue.

OpenSUSE Install :: NVIDIA Drivers - After Installation Of 11.3 - Intermittent Hangs And Blurred Icons

Oct 6, 2010

After installation of 11.3 I had intermittent hangs and blurred icons.

"My Computer" told me I had a Nvidia GeForce 9100 and a driver called "gallium". That was the problem.

I added "ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.3" to my repository and found a new driver to install. That solved my problems. Now my systems are rock solid.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome 3 Preview In 11.3 / Accurately Coordinate Double-click With Random, Intermittent Flashing?

Apr 9, 2011

Since I enjoyed Gnome shell with Ubuntu 9.10 (but Ubuntu runs too slow on this computer for my druthers), I thought it would be fun to check out gnome shell on 11.3. I thought that since my 11.3 has gnome 2.30, that the gnome shell in the software manager would be a concomitant version, so I installed it. I then followed the directions given in the second posting of Enabling Gnome Shell in 11.3?

When I logged back in, I selected Gnome 3 Preview [even though I hadn't thought that that was what I'd installed -- (has openSUSE retired all older versions of Gnome shell?)]. The desktop won't boot (I don't know what the correct way of saying it is). The splash shows, but the icons just intermittently flash off and on at random intervals, never quite making it all the way "on." When I right click the bottom of the screen, I can select "terminal" (when I can accurately coordinate my double-click with the random, intermittent flashing), but then the terminal also does the random, intermittent flashing as well. So I can never get anything typed in. When I reboot, there's no login box.

Ubuntu :: Ondemand Vs Performance - Increases The Clock Speed To Performance When The CPU Is Under Load

Jul 31, 2010

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

OpenSUSE :: Ktorrent Does Return From Sleep Nicely

Apr 2, 2011

I have KDE DE in openSUSE 11.4 Tumbleweed.

The issue is with Ktorrent.

When I put the machine to sleep (suspend to ram) with Ktorrent running and then wake the machine up again, the torrents that were working do resume. But they resume in a very poor fashion, continually going into and out of "stalled" status. This bad connectivity continues indefinitely.

I have to kill Ktorrent and restart it to get good data flow back for the torrents that are running. Is there an explanation for this? And is there something I can do to make the torrents resume nicely when I bring the machine back from sleep?

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 - KTorrent Crashing When Monitor Go To Sleep

Jul 28, 2011

Running openSuSE 11.3 w/ a KDE 4.x desktop. Every time I'm using KTorrent, when I come back into the office and "wake" the monitor, I find KTorrent has crashed and I have to restart it. So I'm guessing that KTorrent is crashing either when my monitor goes to sleep mode or when I'm waking it up. I've tried changing some settings but when the system is running, I cannot seem to access the monitor control panel. Pressing the menu button on the side of the monitor does not bring up the monitor menu. There used to be an easily noticed "Desktop Settings" in KDE 3 but I'm not finding the equivalent in KDE 4. How to keep this Samsung SyncMaster 997DF 19" CRT from going into sleep mode?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Wake-up On Lan From Suspend / Sleep?

May 26, 2010

Firstly, wol works fine from shutdown and hibernate; it's just suspend which doesn't work.

I've got 2 types of workstations, all running 11.1. They both have this kernel:
2.6.27.45-0.1-default #1 SMP 2010-02-22 16:49:47 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Type 1 is a dell optiplex 745, bios version 2.4.1. Here's the relevant bit from lspci:
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5754 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)
Kernel driver in use: tg3
Kernel modules: tg3

[Code]....

The fact that it's happening across two different machines makes me wonder if it is some OS setting I've missed, but then maybe neither card/driver supports it from suspend.

I'd really like to get them waking from suspend because training users to use suspend rather than hibernate would be a pain. Also, being able to configure such that it only wakes from suspend and not hibernate/shutdown, as implied in the bios, would allow me to wake machines up for backups etc only when the users are here, rather than on holiday/seconded to another department etc.

OpenSUSE :: Overall Slow Performance Of 11.2?

Dec 22, 2009

First of all, apologies if this is not the correct place to post this. I recently installed openSUSE 11.2 (Gnome, 32bit) on my newish PC. It is an Acer Aspire X3200 (AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core, 1.8 GHz, 4096 MB, NVIDIA GeForce 8200 Integrated, can provide detailed specifications if needed). I've to say I am very disappointed with the results so far! Sorry to say this but I'm having a whole load of problems that I never had when I had Vista or with current Win 7. Here are the issues:

1. Slow network performance. I've disabled ipv6 but it is still the same. Not only when I use Firefox, it is also slow when I use console based programs. 2. Instability - Gnome system monitor crashed 6 (or more) out of 10 times I use it. System Monitor users more CPU resources than anything else! Also when I started the PC this morning, I only had the desktop wallpaper. No icons, no taskbar, no mouse movements or menus, nothing. I had to force shut down it after a while. I'm sure we all are familiar with this on XP but I've never seen something like that on Linux!

3. Annoying noise coming every time I move mouse (mainly when scrolling) and even if I'm not doing anything. I suspect it is coming from my HDD indicator as it always blink even when nothing is running. This can't be a hardware issue as I've never had this on Vista or Win 7 (it is virtually silent on Vista and XP but not on SuSE) This noise is driving me totally mad.

4. Slow performance in general. No matter what I do, even typing this on this text window, it seems everything is running so slow. I never had this problem when I was running 10.x on my 6 year old PC. CPU is always running around 20%-30%, when I don't run any other applications but just Firefox (I have Foxclocks, Delicious and FEBE as add-ons and I don't have any problem using them on Vista or Win 7). I am using Compiz, not sure if this has got anything to do with that.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Devices Involved In Wake From Sleep - Suspend To Memory

Apr 17, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.4 KDE (upgraded to Tumbleweed but that's not relevant here). The computer is a Dell Optiplex. My sleep (suspend to ram) and wake (restore from ram) work very well. The box can multiboot to windows 7 as well as to Linux.

In Linux, the restore process is triggered by pressing the power button on the front of the case. No other action will bring it awake.

In windows, the restore process is triggered by the power button but also by moving the mouse or touching the Escape key, spacebar etc.

Here's the question: how do I get the computer to wake in Linux by activating a key (or mouse, whatever) instead of just the power button (which is under the desk and hard to get to)?

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 - OpenOffice Slow Performance (Need More Memory)

Oct 1, 2010

Ever since 11.3 Open Office was performing "badly" to say the least. It loaded slow, with a few documents open "save-as" and selecting a different folder took up to a minute and so on. Anyway I had the suspicion that there maybe not enough memory allocated. Nothing within the OO settings worked.

Then I looked into yast=>/etc/sysconfig=>System=>Limits...
found "HARDLOCKLIMIT" set to "@256"
changed to "@512"......OK finished.

Ran a test with 10 documents open
a) Startup was much faster
b) Saveas instantly
c) PDF instantly
d) Selecting new folder instantly
Preliminary conclusion : Java(sun) and OO needs more memory
