I am a long time Debian user and have recently started using openSUSE. Now when I attempt to mount an USB flash drive in Dolphin it gives this error message: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFilesystemType: Unknown file system 'vfat'.
View 9 RepliesAfter upgrading from Fedora 12 ot Fedora 13 I now get this message when mounting a FAT32 partition in /etc/fstab: mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat' Does not Fedora recognized FAT32 partitions anymore ? Am I missing a package which adds 'vfat' filesystem support ? This worked without problems in Fedora 12 and the upgrade to Fedora 13 from a Fedora 13 installation DVD ran without problems or errors.

How to mount vfat partition automatically after boot? After login it it will mount all vfat partition and the icon of those parition will be at desktop. How can it be done. udisks is installed. If i click a vfat partition from pcmanfm it prompts for password to mount.I don't want to click. It will be automatically mounted and i will get the icon of that mounted vfat partition at desktop

I originally had it partitioned as NTFS but I realized that my Xbox 360 will only mount VFAT filesystems. I believe that I partitioned it correctly with yast. However I am still having trouble mounting it. Below is the output of fdisk, mount and dmesg.

How can i get the windows vfat partition at left side of dolphin? Windows vfat drives are mounted in /windows.Those are not displayed at the left side of dolphin.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
I am trying to mount a file image, like this
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps
But I get the following:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I try ext3:
mount -o loop /tmp/apps.img /media/apps -t ext3
dmesg says:
error: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev loop6.
I've also tried ext2, vfat etc. How can I detect the filesystem type of apps.img?
I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage.
View 5 Replies View RelatedDebian 8.2 .... Desktop is lxde BTW. It auto-mounts the drive, and sometimes it's writeable for a while, but then it all goes read-only out of the blue. su doesn't work. I tried installing autofs and it doesn't mount at all.

I'm not an lxde fan. The file manager always was crashy. But I'm on an Acer Aspire, and too many desktop managers just can't deal with the screen ratio.
I moved some win98 drives into my 10.04 server, and would like to add them to my fstab file.Do vfat partitions have uuid's?If yes, how do I get that number?If no, I can use /dev/sdc1, and /dev/sdd1, can I get an idea what the fstab line will look like?Do I need to create the mount points (say, /WindowsCdrive) before the fstab will mount the partition?

But if fstab says mount /dev/sdb1 at /video it becomes owned by root and wont let root change owners. even if fstab says rw,user i still cant mount or unmount /dev/sdb1 at /video

It was functional on July 28, the last time I logged into the machine and edited a file. Even as the superuser when I attempt to change, say, the permissions of a file, I get:

I am running Fedora 14 with kernel 2.6.35.74 x86_64 and I am having an issue with a Vfat partition that is shared with Windows 7 on a dual boot setup. this partition contains my mozilla profiles and it occasionally mounts as read only in Fedora. I wont be able to write to it and root doesnt seem to be able to write to it when this happens. I checked this by trying to redirect an output of ifconfig. My fstab entry looks like this.

These two (fstab and ls -l) always look the same whether the partition behaves as read only or not.
Does anyone know if there's a way to create an ext4 image on top of a vfat volume? I know how to create a disk image file and mount it on the loopback device, but a vfat volume allows a max file size of 4 GB so is there a way to make a spanning disk image?For example you'd have disk1.img through disk3.img where each one is 4 GB, but when mounted via loopback it would appear as one complete 12 GB ext4 volume. Is this possible?

1. vfat 100GB
2. ext3 remainder
Both were formatted when I created them with qtparted. Windows 7 sees them, and says they are healthy, but does not recognize the vfat partition. Is it too big, perhaps? Short of moving everything off the vfat partition and recreating it with W7, how do I fix it? I think W7 uses some sort of extended fat32 now?
I can't seem to mount my local VFAT partition with username ownership; it is consistently mounted as daemon. I've tried to CHOWN and CHGRP the mount point of /media/SHARED (its location), but that doesn't work. I should include the reason in case you have other suggestions that are alternative to changing ownership on the mounted VFAT drive:
In my old Fedora 9, I ran Eudora under Wine. The program lived on my VFAT partition. I could hence run Eudora under both Windows and Fedora, which was really nice - even though I hardly boot into Windows anymore. While I did notice the username and group name were the same as they are under Fedora 14 fstab mounting - daemon - it still worked without a hitch. To note, the partition was also automounted in Fedora 9 in fstab.I just upgraded to Fedora 14. When I automount the drive through fstab, Eudora will not launch. Yet when I manually mounted the drive (and I noticed that the username and group are my local username, not daemon), Eudora launches fine. So while my solution, mounting the drive manually when Fedora 14 starts, does in fact work, it is a bit of a pain. Luckily I don't reboot too often!
In any case, I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions. Maybe it's just a mounting syntax issue; but as for mounting syntax in fstab, I used the same line as my F9 fstab.The line I used was: /dev/sda3 /media/SHARED vfat umask=0000,dmask=0000,uid=0002,gid=users,users 0 0

my problem is, that opensuse doesn't seem to be able to mount NFTS filesystems, such as my external hard drive, which I would really like to access.
So after a bit of research related to the error message I got trying to mount the hard drive, I found out, that I need to update /etc/filesystems.
This reduces the problem to one question:
How do I update etc/filesystem, because I could imagine, that playing around with this file might cause some serious problems, which would probably lead to the loss of the capability to mount the partitions, my actual system runs on.
Information, which might be needed: I'm currently running opensuse 11.4 + the file /proc/filesystems could also lead to a solution
I'm gonna buy a 1.5 TB HDD to put there backups, videos, and stuff like that, and i was wondering what Filesystem should i put there considering that it will be used for backups (mostly) and I must count with that drive in case of something going wrong.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWith the release of openSUSE 11.3 I decided to upgrade my three-year old computer which is running 11.0 and has been running out of disk for the last few months. I bought a new 500Gb HDD and installed it as the master drive, and moved my old drive to the slave. I installed 11.3 on the new drive. Too easy.Then I tried to mount my old drive so I could move my account files across. I wasn't able to mount the drive, which uses LVM (Logical Volume Manager). Is there any reason this wouldn't be recognised by 11.3?Then I tried to mount my new drive from my old system but 11.0 doesn't have support for the ext4 filesystem. I loaded the ext4dev kernel module with no joy:

Under both Windows and Fedora 11, my USB flash drive was mounted using the volume label of "RBR Astro". Under Fedora 12, it now gets mounted as "RBR ASTRO". I like my old case. It's a small nuisance, but it also ended up breaking all my links to files/directories that I store on flash. How can I get the flash to mount while preserving case?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just discovered that automounting a fat32 partition (which i keep for exchanging file between Ubuntu & Win) slows down my boot time, from around 25secs to 1 minute. It does not behave in the same way for a ntfs partition (the vista partition itself).

I have a vfat partition under RedHat RHEL5 that I currently must mount manualy after each boot. I would like it to auto-mount but I cannot find a way to do this without it becoming ro except for root. My other partitions auto-mount just fine. I have tried the vfat as a separate partition and as a VLM logical drive (as it currently is).
The fstab statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat noauto,users 0 0"
allows me to mount it as a user. The statement:
"/dev/VolGroup00/LogVolDos /dos vfat defaults 1 2"
is what I use for other VLM partitions, but for the vfat it seems to only allow root access. Manually mount this partition is OK, it's just that I have sometimes forgotten and then it is not included in backups. What do I need to do to make the vfat auto-mount as accessible for a user?

I did not find the solution to my problem reading other posts so I apologize in advance if this question has been solved in a previous thread.I recently started having input/output errors when trying to access directories on my external HD. Today I moved the content of my external HD to a single directory before starting a backup. Since then I can not access this backup directory anymore although the external HD automatically mounts when I turn it on.
I tried my luck starting the external HD in Windows but it wont show up in the explorer. What should I do to be able to mount it in windows and is there any way this would fix the problem?I'm running xubuntu kernel v 2.6.27-14-generic and the external HD is an acomdata.
