A friend accidentally did mkfs.vfat on my 1Tb ext. hard drive..It's now showing as 400 GB free where it was 10 GB previously and the remaining data is being shown as weird symbols and empty folders and yet it occupies more than 500GB..Any way to recover the data completely?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to format 4 GB sd memory using mkfs.vfat. I want to use the card both in linux and windows so I am formatting with Vfat filesystem. When I format the card from command line with "mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/mmcblk1" I am getting a warning message like
"unable to get drive geometry, using default 255/63" but the data in the card is erased.
But when I mount the card and checks for the size using df -h its showing 1 GB instead of 4 GB. how to format the SD memory card or any other alternate way to format the card.
I got this message when I tried to format my eternal usb hard disk to vfat format. Do you know what it is about?

I've run DiskInternals Partition Recovery tool, and all my files are still there (you have to pay $139 to have it restore the files). Is there any way using tools in linux to restore the ntfs partition/files? It was a single disk with the partition taking the entire drive. I've tried mounting it with the -t option, but it says invalid ntfs signature. Man, two lessons the hard way, make sure you backup (duh) and be careful what you type as root.
View 8 Replies View RelatedopenSuse 11.2 KDE 4 desktop User = newbie I was having some trouble with a Hard drive that I store my photo's and other personal data on. Fisrtly, it was messing my OS up, so that it would not boot to the desktop, but only to the command line where it would report that this drive was somehow corrupted and needed to be repaired. Secondly, the OS was reporting that certain files were 380,000.2 TB in size. this drive is only 200 GB.I didn't want to do the repair until I found a way to back up my data. I found another hard drive to do backup to but I had to take some data off of it. Which I did.
In the spirit of trying learn command line I decided to partition and format the hard drive using fdisk. I found some easy to use directions and proceeded to partition the drive. Unfortunately, I failed to realize the directions were only for the partitioning part [my fault for not reading further]. What I missed was that after using fdisk to partition, you must use mkfs to set filesystem type.[I thought I had done that in fdisk using the "l" , "t" commands within fdisk].
My questions are:
1] Can I do this mkfs command after I have put my data on the new hard drive or should I start fresh and redo partioning? [I have not deleted the other drive so my data is still there.]
2] What would be the cause of the incorrectly reported file sizes?
I accidentally ran mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb on the wrong drive.It used to be 2 NTFS partitions with lots of data. is there any hope I can only change the file system to ntfs back and revert what I did?not sure if mkfs erase the data or just rewrite some partition table.

I was recently uninstalling mysql5 from /opt/local/bin.I typed:rm -rf /opt/local/bin mysql*instead ofrm -rf /opt/local/bin/mysql*This deleted my entire /opt/local/bin directory which puts me in a bit of a bind.Is there any way to recover those files? I had a working Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows 7 installed, and i was writing an image of IPCOP [URL] to the USB drive incorrectly, i did mkfs on my primary partation i.e. /dev/sda1 now i am trapped in situation, i was trying to write and usb-hdd image of ipcop on USB Drive, while doing so, i have given following commands
1. mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1
2. e2label usb-pen
3. zcat filename > /dev/sda1
* now the stupid thing i have done, is given /sda1( My HDD ) instead of /sdb1 (USB Drive), it has successfully loaded IPCOP bootable on my primary drive, and my laptop is not working now.

now i want to get my partitions & data back, if anybody have idea about how to get rid of this situation. The good thing i have done, is that, i didn't tried to install anything on the drive after this happened, with hopes that i can get my data back i guess that it can be recovered but confusion is that, which data recovery software to use, and for linux or windows, as i had my data on NTFS filesystem and currently there is Free Space and EXT4 partition.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 250 GB external disk, where there was store a hundred and something GB of data. Pictures, music, documents and TV-shows. It was FAT32. In an attemt to make an live USB drive with openSUSE, I did exactly what I shoulden't do: I mistook the external disk for the the USB drive. Now the external disk has a 700 mb linux partition, while 232.2 GB is unpartitioned. TestDisk from CGSecurity is looking to see if there is a lost partition table there, somewhere. Is there anything I can do? There was no formating, so the data is still there (except for those 650 mb that was overwritten). Is there any way to rebuild the old partition?

i was using 10.10 and this disaster occured when i tried to install 11.04 replacing 10.10. i have a separate home partition, while installing 11.04 i chose one weird option called "encrypt home partition"i didnt chose to format the home partition but once the installation is over, i have all my data lost in home directory.Is ther any chance that i could get the 165 gb junk data or atleast some 200 mb of important data

Is there a way to recreate these partitions? I was running low on disk-space, and I think the problem is that the script generated a lot of text files and used up all of the available hard drive space.
Now, whenever I try to boot the machine, it reaches the user-select/login screen, but logging in just causes it to go black for a second before returning to the login screen. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB, and Ubuntu Rescue Remix on another, and both allow me to boot up my machine, but I can't see my hard-drive - neither in /mnt/ nor in /media/ - in order to copy my thesis files or to delete some excess text files to free up some hard-drive space.
I have a DVD-R labeled 16x that has been written by me in several sessions (but perhaps only one), always with an iso9660 fs, using a DVD writer whose data are these:

In spite of the last line, the drive is DVD+R compliant too. This is the only DVD drive I have and it seems unable to read that medium. Other discs, it reads them well. Before kissing the disc good bye, I would like to try all possible procedures at my disposal. The disc, by visual inspection, seems to be in a pristine condition. When I insert it, the drive remains with the led turned on for about one minute. I tried 'cdrecord -setdropts driveropts=singlesession dev=x,x,x' to switch the drive to single session mode but with no results. I have many tools in the cdrtools package:

For several days I have tried to create a new raid5 array, after accidently blowing up the old one.But it seems that the raid data was burned into the harddisks ineradicably. I keep seeing the raid data that was used for the old array. I reloaded vista from scratch and then my customer says "Oh, I guess I forgot to back those files up...".Is it possible to recover some files even though vista was reloaded? I suppose the basic answer is "As long as they havent been overwritten yet".
Im running testdisk and its made a ton of directories with files in them that I assume it has recovered. My hard drive setup consists of a RAID0 array of two 500GB sata disks. The partition table (from my head!) goes like this:50GB NTFS Windows XP /c/50GB ext4 Ubuntu 9.10 /4GB swapThe rest is a large NTFS partition all the way up to the end of the array at 987GB. Mounted at /media/share/I am thinking I will have to start again (I won't lose much, I have recent backups), but what is the best way of restoring the system as much as I can? Currently my computer has been booted into Ubuntu for over an hour, and after pressing ctrl+alt+shift+F2 I can see that it is finding errors still, now at sector 6008. Should I let this run its course or REISUB it and boot onto a live CD. I think the main problem is with an NTFS partition
