OpenSUSE Hardware :: Bose USB Soundlink - No Sound Output?
Nov 30, 2010
opensuse v11.1
linux 2.6.27.48-0.1-default x86_64
KDE
We recently purchased a Bose Music System/Soundlink. It has a wireless unit that plugs into the music system, and a USB "key" that attaches to the computer. The music system connects to the USB key as it is supposed to do.
Linux sees the USB key as an audio unit. In fact, it offers Bose Link (audio), Bose (Front) and a Bose (digital audio) options. In KDE :: Configure Desktop :: Sound it lists the 3 Bose USB audio options.
So far, no sound has been emitted through the Bose USB audio even though it has been given preference to everything sound. It has not mattered which of the Bose options is given the highest preference. Linux still steadfastly outputs to the builtin hardware (Realtek audio) foregoing all other options.
How do I convince Linux to output to the Bose USB audio?

I've installed all codecs according to the multimedia guide, did the package switch to Packman and still no sound from Amarok.
Songs appear to be playing but no music plays.
I can hear my music files with Enqueue in SMPlayer, VLC, Gnome Mplayer, Kaffeine, Mplayer, and SMPlayer.
Running OpenSUSE 11.2, KDE 4.4.1, Amarok 2.3

I just finished installing 11.4 64bit. Kaffeine and Amarok both produce sound, but VLC does not. When I invoke vlc [URL]. I can see the name of the album playing but there is silence. I ran the mmcheck script.

I am running openSUSE 11.2 with an hda-intel sound card (dell latitude d830) in x64. Pulseaudio is only giving me a "dummy" sound card, even though volume in the yast sound configuration works. Volume is definitely not muted. Here is the requested info:alsa-info.sh:[URL]
Code:

Having some problems with HDMI-Audio on my HTPC: I don't get sound out of HDMI port! For system info look there: Sysprofile
OS is Suse11.3 64Bit with KDE now!
At "System-Settings/Multimedia/Audio Output" there are the following devices in the given order:
HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev1 Analog)
HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev2 Digital)
HDA NVidia, NVIDIA HDMI (HDMI Audio)
That's consistent with the connector layout of the mainboard. Playing "Test sound" while marked the HDMI Audio is not causing any output with HDMI, while analog works just fine!
I also installed the nVidia prop drivers with the packet manager.
In YAST there is one card found in the sound section::
Idex=0 and Card Model=MCP79 High Definition Audio

A few days ago I setup a pc. It contains an "Intel ICH5" sound card. Before I begin posting all the configuration stuff I've tried so far what the standard procedures are to set it all up for recording the sound card output (with Audacity)?
On my older computer it all worked fine but now I only get silent recordings. However sometimes (when I played on the controls the right way...) I get recordings where you can (amoung some noise) recognize the stuff I actually wanted to record very low... Apart from Audacity I've also tried
Code:
arecord -vv -fdat audio.wav
which didn't work either. That's why I think the problem is not related to Audacity but to the system.
Is the combination of OpenSuse 11.2 + ALSA + Intel ICH5 commonly known to cause such trouble?

I am attempting to set up a machine to use as a movie/video viewer. When I connect this machine using an HDMI cable to an HDMI TV, I get video, but no audio. No beeps, no system sounds, no noise of any kind.
I've run the following mixers and set all volume controls to maximum:Gmixer, Kmix, AlsaMixer and pavucontrol.
When playing a video, pavucontrol meter shows signal from the application and shows output signal to the HDMI device, but where that output is going to is beyond me.
Using the Sound setup of Yast, I attempt to play a test sound on the HDMI, nothing.
Built in Audio adapter works fine. I have disabled it in pavucontrol in attempts to get the sound directed to the HDMI output, but, silence is all I get. I've also tried enabling and disabling simultaneous output with no difference in results.
I've tried a few suggestions from other posts with the same issue (creating /etc/asoundrc.conf, modifying /etc/pulse/default.pa), but no joy.
If I boot up that other operating system (starts with a W), all sounds (system & video) show up on the HDMI input with no adjustments needed.
Why must this be so difficult?
The technical details:
Suse 11.4
EVGA GeForce 8400GS Video card (HDMI)
All commands below were issued while HDMI cable connected, and video playing (using VLC).

I have installed Fedora 10-x86_64. I was happy and content with the distribution. Earlier, I found that there is no sound on my headphone's jack where as the normal sound output from my laptops's speakers is OK. I fiddled with the available mixers but couldnt get anything. There seem to be 5 different mixers (HDA, ALSA, OSS), 3 for the playback and 2 for the capture.
I am using an acer 4530 laptop. It has a nvidia Nforce MCP77 chipset. and the o/p lsmod| grep snd :

I did a alsa-info and upload the details at:[url]

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

I'm not sure where to have posted this but I can't seem to get sound.
After typing ' lspci ' I got the following code...
I'm using a LCD monitor through the HDMI port, and I have no sound, nor through the audio port. (Both of).
Also, I have tried Alsamixer but nothing is on mute and I turned them up to the fullest. Here's a screen-shot of what HDMI gives me in alsamixer:
Seems HDMI won't allow me to go over 00 volume?
What am I doing wrong, or have not done?

I recently installed Kubuntu 9.10 (I think, the latest anyway) on my gf's computer. Everything works great, except for the sound output. The volume control works, (both the buttons on the computer and inside Kubuntu) but there is no sound output whatsoever (not in vlc, system sound etc). Ive googled a little, and I've seen some tips about get it, right click in on sound settings in the panel, and choosing preferences, I don't seem to have that tab, however I've got a "show mixer window" where I the can adjust volume.
I've got 2 tabs here ; 'HDA ATI SB' and 'HDA ATI HDMI' I guess the first one is the one that is the ordinary output, the other if I connect a tv or something. I've also read something about 'alsa' and 'alsamix' I don't seem to have that one, and I've tried sudo apt- but I've haven't been able to find it. I dont know if it is of any importance, but it is the 64bit version of Kubuntu. I'm not sure about exactly what soundcard and driver I've got, but the computer (laptop) is a pretty new HP, and when I run:
Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#*| grep Codec
I get the answer
Code:
Codec : IDT 92HD75B3X5

I have Ubuntu 9.10, and am trying to get my headset to work with it. It's a USB headset, not a bluetooth headset. Anyway, the input is working. I switched my input from my internal mic to my USB one in my sound settings, and that fixed that. However, even if I set my output device to the USB, it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any advice? It works on Windows.
The headset is: Planet UP-100, Genius G-Talk

I am using fedora 12 (omega 12.1 remix), after installation I got very very low sound output and I dreaded it was to remain this way. Then I did some searching and found this command in a linux site 'alsamixer -c 0', I turned up everything and yippee I had sound. But now the problem is at each restart the settings are defaulted to a low output. How can I make the change permanent? Can I call alsamixer command and give 9-10 up keys as its input in bashrc. Well I am just guessing.

I've had problems with my sound that i mentioned in this topic: t=1386194 but noone answered so i started trying things.I've updated ALSA and managed to partially achieve what i wanted to, but other things gets messed even worse. I've get rid of choppy sounds problems and i can get sound from few applications UNLESS firefox isn't one of them. The problem is. If i start firefox first, and open a page that is using sound for example ..... and start a vid. Sound from all other applications is somehow blocked untill i'll turn off firefox. Or, when i start a music player, open firefox, pause player, start vid on ..... i have no sound from firefox.
What's weird is that i started quakelive (a web browser based game), started a movie in vlc, and went to system > preferences > Sound / Programs using output atm tab. And there was no apps at all, and both, firefox and vlc were playing sound. (screenshot attached to show this) How can i make firefox not to 'take' whole sound output?btw.

sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/seq*
