OpenSUSE Hardware :: Automatic Feedback From Live CD?
Mar 14, 2011
There is a new openFATE proposal (http://features.opensuse.org/311661) to add a desktop icon to the Live CD's that will use smolt to provide feedback for hardware options that work.

How do I get launch feedback for Qt applications such as VLC? For example, if I open a file with a gtk application the mouse turns into a spinning thing to show the application is loading, but this does not happen with Qt applications.

Code:
#include <stdio.h>
int main(void)
{
float fahr, celc, result;

I just downloaded OpenSuse 11.1 64 bit live cd from it's official site.I have live usb creater in my xp box , with the help of which I successfully created live USB for fedora 11 earlier. Now the problem is whenever I try to create live usb using Opensuse live ISO image after extracting all files to usb , it gets failed.The same thing is happening with OpenSolaris 11 live cd iso image. Does this mean that live usb creater I have, was only foe Fedora distros?

At Dell we have worked hard to build out the Dell Consumer Support Home Page to be a thorough support website providing all levels of self-support service, as well as providing easy access to all of the relevant information needed to obtain assisted support. The design of the page has grown organically over time, but we feel it's time to give the look/feel of the page a facelift.

I am a sound engineer trainee and I'm desperately looking for a Linux version of the Simple Feedback Trainer [URL]. It's a rather easy but very good program that provide info to sound engineers train the detection of feedback frequencies. Do you know if such a thing already exists? I haven't been able to find it in the Ubuntu Software Center.

First off, this isn't the usual "physical" feedback of a speaker being too close to the mic. This mic is part of a headset so there's no way for the output and input to overlap and cause feedback. This mic has worked perfectly for me in the past, but I recently re-installed my OS and it hasn't worked since.
It seems as if my audio out is getting redirected to microphone in. If I open up and sound recording program while I have some audio being output, the output will get echoed back in through the microphone channel, although any actual microphone input is never picked up. I can blow or scream into the mic and there's no indication at all that Linux is picking it up.
I'm running ArchLinux with ALSA. I've gone into alsa mixer and played with just about every channel in every way I can think of, and none of the options seem to fix the problem.
How should I fix this? I use my mic pretty much constantly when I'm on the computer, being without it sucks.

I'm running Maverick right now, but the problem also occurs with Lucid. My sound card is a creative X-Fi Titanium (emu20k2). Audio playback is fine, surround is fine, etc. Audio capture is "fine" too - the problem is that the microphone picks up everything that the headset is outputting. This is very strange since the headset is a noice-cancelling headset and in order for that to happen on other platforms (windows) I essentially have to turn the volume up to astronomical levels. As always, this doesn't happen on windows.
Needless to say this poses somewhat of a problem with VoIP applications since folks I'm interacting with constantly hear themselves echoed back by me. The only solution is to tune down the microphone volume but that adds another problem: people can no longer hear me clearly.
So my question is: is there a way to enable echo reduction for Pulse Audio so that the mic doesn't constantly capture what's coming from the outputs? And yes - when I look at the "input" tab in the sound preferences application I can see the marker move if I speak - same with pavucontrol

Have been using Lubuntu Natty (32-bit) happily for a few days now, even generated a remastered iso (urxvt, custom .bashrc, .bash_aliases, Chromium with AdBlock Plus, Tabs to the Front, Context Menu Search, Unified Openbox and GTK themes, aria2c, htop). One of the Peppermint OS developers put together a 64-bit version of Lubuntu Natty. Downloaded and installed it from USB (using USB Creator) today. Hangs pretty bad at LXDM login screen.

So I've used Jack Control for sometime now to control my recording suite that I use (Ardour, Rakarak, and Hydrogen Drum Machine) recently however, when I start the Jack control, as soon as I connect input to output in the connections window, it's like it has internal feedback. The feedback crescendos, then cuts out. after that (let's say I have my Fender plugged into the sound card) if I strike a string there it comes out muddy distorted with an awful echo (some what like what echo would sound like on blown speakers). I have checked all the settings, everything is as it was before when it worked fine... dunno... is Lucid possessed?

I use Squeeze. I just recently upgraded from Lenny. My sources.list is a combination of Debian DVDs and some http repos (for multimedia, non-free, and security updates). I rely largely on DVDs because I use dial-up.
When I tried to run apt-get dist-upgrade for the multimedia packages on my system, it told me to insert Debian DVD disc #1, and from that attempted to install the following programs: librtmp0 libdirac-decoder0 libggiwmh0 libggiwmh0-target-x libvdpau1 twolame. But, it then told me:

I am going to be involved with a massive filesystem copy from a local to a remote server in the next couple of weeks. There are ten filesystems in involved in this process. All, except one, are one hundred gigabytes in size, with the remaining one at twenty gigabytes.The cp command with the -pr options will be used to copy the directories to their new location. A speed test, involving ten directories, was done to determine the average amount of time it would take to complete the process. The ten directories used in this test ranged in size from 2.3 gigabytes to 4.3 gigabytes. The results indicated the average amount time to complete the copy was around one minute and thirty seconds.
The question I have is the following: Is it better to interactively go to each filesystem and run the cp -pr command there, or should I write a script that will automatically go to each filesystem and run the copy?

I am running on 11.2 and i have added some repositories, like Packman, KDE 4.4 Factory, KDE 4.4 Community.I would like to have this packages automatically updated which seems not to happen. If I look into software management every now and then, I always have to "switch system packages" to get the updates via the the updated applet.So I was wondering, if it could be due to a wrong priority for those repositories? Is a high or a low priority the point where the applet is looking from which repo to update? If not, what is this priority used for?

after having far too many problems with other brown-coloured distros, I moved my MythTV box to SuSE (what all the other machines here use). Everything is working, EXCEPT for one thing: automatic idle shutdown. I cannot get MythWelcome to shut down the machine automatically (choosing shutdown now from it's menu does work). The log shows sudo: sorry, a password is required to run sudo (sudo -n) or the infamous "no tty and no askpass". (plain sudo)
I have added /sbin/shutdown to the sudoers file, and I can run sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now from the terminal and shutdown without a password... but sudo will NOT run from mythtv. I've even tried adding a special exception to the sudoers file, "Defaults !requiretty" with no luck. This is a dedicated frontend/backend with no user access (doesn't boot a desktop manager; goes straight to Mythtv) so I'm no too worried about potential security; the machine is on a LAN and cannot be accessed from the WAN side.

When I create a new user account and login the first time to Gnome a series of files and directories is created in the user's home directory. Those directories are for example:
.ICEauthority
.cache
.config
.dbus
.gnupg
Bilder
Desktop
Documents
Musik
Videos
Vorlagen
ffentlich
How can I control what files and directories are created? I checked /etc/skel but none of those entries where there. In particular, I do not want to have the folders "Bilder", "Documents", "Musik", "Videos", "Vorlagen" and "ffentlich" being created.

I created a profile for Yast Backup and successfully executed it manually. However, when I set up the Automatic Backup with the same profile it doesn't work. It will start at the scheduled time and do the "search" part of it but it hangs before it creates the archive. These two processes (backup_cron & y2base) remains running and never terminates.
Here are the last few lines in the Yast log before it hangs:

I enabled Automatic Online Updates in opensuse 11.2, and set the frequency to "Daily", but after 24 hours I haven't seen an update. It may be because I had YaST still running and maybe the installed software database was locked.At any rate,ow can I verify that Automatic Online Updates are scheduled?

I got my problem with KDE Desktop. I'm using openSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.4, when I make updates to my YaST repositories. I am a full file system usage in. / then I delete the file / var / tmp, because large files up to 4 GB. KDE Desktop then I could not run ranymore.
I was googling and found KDE/KDE4 - openSUSE when I try to execute this command:
kbuildsycoca4
kquitapp plasma-desktop> / dev / null 2> & 1
kstart plasma-desktop &> / dev / null 2> & 1
KDE Desktop can run normally but does not like the first time before the crash. And my KDE Desktop not automatic start.
Where an i found log from KDE DEsktop. I had searched on /var/log/messages, /var/log/kdm.
And how the best solution if I want to restore OPensuse.?

I have just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 my Dell Inspiron 5100 with LAN adapter Edimax Ew-7711utn. It was working fine under 11.2, without using Network Manager. The old RT2870 driver was loaded and wpa_supplicant started at boot time. But it does not connect any more automatically with 11.3. The nl80211 almost universal driver seems to be missing, wpa_supplicant is not launched during the boot process, and no connection to the AP is therefore made. I have tried quickly NetworkManager but it is of no help in this case. There is still a long way to go to make it a reliable clever tool. So, back to the ifup method, I can only connect manually with this small script :
#!/bin/sh
echo "Starting mywifi "
/usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext -B
sleep 2
/sbin/dhclient wlan0
echo ""
route add -net default gw 192.168.0.1
sleep 3
iwconfig
exit 0
It works, but I am not happy at all to have to run this bad script, and would like to understand the origin of this regression, and why is nl80211 not found.

Just ran into this issue with Suse 11.2. Everytime I try to change the desktop wallpaper, plasma crashes and returns me to the log in screen. This is the first time this has happened and it happens no matter what wallpaper I choose. Desktop effects are OFF. Strange that adding widgets to the desktop does NOT cause this crash, just changing the desktop wallpaper. The computer is using 855GM Intel Chipset.

I bought a new HP printer and had to install the latest HPLIP version. I had to compile it and install it from source. In order to avoid interferences with the installed version, I had first removed the installed version. But now Yast wants to re-install this old version with any package installation or upgrade because it sees unresolved dependencies. How can I stop it to add this packages? Or how can I tell Yast that the hplip packages are installed?
