Fresh Install. Used Gnome3 link from here
openSUSE:GNOME 3.0 - openSUSE
I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.
Is it possible to install Gnome3 as a separate desktop, ie. selectable from the login screen. So I have the option to choose Gnome2 or Gnome3 ? If so, How would I do it ?
I am trying to run k3b in Gnome3 but cannot enable the aplication to rip cd's to mp3. Have tried various things with the help of caf, (see thread in 'multimedia').
I am on home internet access so it does not have a fix IP. I would like to set my web server to be accesible from outside. So what I do? First I must set my router to point access for port 80 to this machine. Then in the machine I open port 80 right? Then what software must I install is it no-ip?
I have upgraded my OpenSuse 11.4 to gnome3, and it works beautifully, but now. I want to be able to log in to old gnome desktop and I can't. I only have gnome 3 as my default gnome desktop now? Can I have my classic gnome desktop back without removing my gnome 3? Can I make Gnome 3 & my classic Gnome 2.3## co-exist so I get to choose at login?
using OEL 5.4, which uses Gnome 2.16 interface I can see my share from Windows, but whatever I do, I get messages that my share is not accessible. The whole user thing is quite complex, dont understand what user I should use on Windows, what password, what user should have what rights on linux.
I'll post smb.conf tomorrow ... The problem is that Windows lacks any decent error message, stating what kind of error message. Is there no Samba client for Windows?
I'm installing Liferay as a WAR on Tomcat 6 on a new Ubuntu server.I want my portal accessible only via HTTPS, that's why I've enabled it via Apache. My config :Apache 2 (/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/001-https)
I'm slowly getting used to Gnome 3 and trying to give it a chance. After a few oddities (like it swallowing my Gnome Shell and Tilda invocations because I use Super in them) then I think I'm slowly getting used to it. There are still some things I miss from Compiz, but it has potential and I like some bits (the notifications and dialogs).I don't know what got upgraded, but my themes seemed to be working before yet today I've got the default Sonar rather than my darker Sonar theme with a fixed Chromium style. I've managed to change the titlebar theme, but I can't change the GTK theme or the icon theme.
Running "gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme" reports "Tango-green", but I still have the default icon theme and using Appearances only partially works.Running "gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme" reports "SonarLighter" (the menu bar is lighter to match the Uniq theme) but I'm definitely seeing Sonar.I've tried gnome-tweak-tool from someone's OBS, but various dependencies seem to be missing (first it bails with the wrong GI version, then I updated some other bits and tried again, but even after switching a dozen or more packages then it never started).
I was playing with a theme (Atolm-GS) and followed the install instructions which stated to back up the /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme directory, and replace it with the one from the theme. I did this, logged off, logged on, got my wallpaper for a second, then the Oh No Screen. I logged off, logged in to IceWM, replaced the theme folder with the original, logged back in to Gnome3 and same thing. Alt+F4 does not get rid of the OH No screen. My ~/.xsessions-errors file contains the following:
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started. sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). Trying to start a default input method for the locale en_US.UTF-8. There is no default input method for the current locale. Dummy input method "none" (do not use any fancy input method by default)
I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 on my laptop and I decided to try out the Gnome 3 shell. I really like the design and I like the way it functions so I would like to keep using it, but it seems as though every time I install a new application or package it breaks Gnome 3. This is really frustrating because when I then try to log in it just gives me that cryptic error message that im sure you all have heard about "Oh No! Something went wrong!" or something like that and then it tells me to log out.
I know a fair bit about linux in general, but im no expert by any stretch of the imagination (my experiences have been with Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, and some older distros) so im only used to the Apt-get package manager and I find zypper to not be very understandable. So I don't know if im breaking Gnome 3 every time I install something because of some dependencies not getting installed. My laptop is running a Intel cure 2 duo processor and an Intel mobile graphics chipset (which runs gnome 3 fine normally).
I was having some trouble with dual display on my laptop, so I loaded the system using the nv graphics driver. I got some message from gnome3 saying that my display configuration wasn't supported, and then it fell back to something that looks similar to gnome2. I switched back to the nouveau driver, but gnome3 didn't come back. Does anybody know how to switch it back?
Below is the link that promises that the OpenSUSE release the Gnome 3 respin the day Gnome 3 is released.
openSUSE:GNOME features - openSUSE
Gnome 3 released yesterday but I see there is n activity so far in terms of re-spin. let me know if I'm missing something or the re-spin is not going to take place anymore. I was eagerly waiting for the GNOME3 so that I can use the respin version of OpenSUSE.

My school computer Crasht, so i thoug hey i wana create a linux server, so do anyone know how to make a Fedora server that can be acest thru the wanport ( acest thru the web ) for sharing school stuff etc ... any one know? or know where i shoud look for manuals?
I setup a server last night and was able to remotely connect to it and access the internet with it. However, now that I have setup /etc/network/interfaces so that the server will have a static IP address, I cannot access the server remotely. Also, from the server itself, I cannot access the internet. Ping provides "unkown host" for any website I try. How do I fix this?! I don't know why this is happening.
Here is my interfaces file: Code: ... #The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0 # also tried with and without auto eth0 # auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.133 netmask 225.225.225.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 This is the only NIC on the server.
Here is ifconfig: Code: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx inet addr: 192.168.1.133 Bcast:192.168.1.225 Mask:225.225.225.0 UP BROACAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txpueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes: 0 (0.0 B) Interupt: 29
I have a samba server set up on my computer, and I can only access the shares over the network by loging in as my main user. This works for all shares, on any drive. When I log in using my fileshare guest account, I get the list of shares, but after selecting one to connect to, it gives an error that the server isn't available. Any share off the boot drive won't work. I don't know if it has to do with permissions, or it's a config problem.
Ever since I moved to GNOME3 and every time I mouse right click and select "Properties" in Nautilus, there is no response. In fact it only freezes the browser and I have to force to kill it.
I have recently changed to using gnome3 shell and after an initial familiarisation i find its usability far better than other desktops and judging by the recent articles and blogs it will be the future so the earlier people start using it the better it will be. I am sure there will be a few bugs to fix, but one thing I have noticed is that in the applications list the app for 'Desk Top Effects' is there, given that gnome 3 does not use compiz nad actually uses clutter why is it there. My curiosity got the better of me and i tried to enable it, which resulted in immeadiate crash!!
Im trying to install GNOME-3 on top of kde and have GNOME DE option show up in kdm. I have SUSE DVD and have set local(OD) repository priority to 80 in order to get most packages from DVD. Inspite of that YaST pulls packages from online repositories, it may be the latest version. I have 8 MbPS dsl but the YaST download speeds are around 500B. How do I change mirrors of repositories. In my opinion this has nothing to do with ipv6, I use ipv6 for openBSD and it get good browsing speeds. Im trying to set kdm4 login manager but it doesnt start after enabling for YaST-/etc/sysconfig.
I just setup a ubuntu 10.10 box learn linux and to play around with, and want it to host my website. I can see the web site on my local network no problem but the outside world gets a time out message. I check to make sure everything is forwarded correctly on my router and the dns so i has to be something in ubuntu blocking out-of-network traffic how do i turn port 80 on to the outside world
We have a development server not accessible to the public used for testing which was setup for us. When attempting to have my PHP scripts upload an image to a folder, I have to CHMOD the folder to 777. Ideally, when a folder is created it has permissions set to 755 - I want to be able to upload to them. Is there a way to change permissions to allow the PHP scripts that run to be able to write to a folder? I know it has something to do with owner or group, but I don't know where to start.
It resides at 65.211.112.135 There are numerous domain names on this ip [URL]s Those are a few of them. Now if you try to ping 65.211.112.135 it does not respond, if you ping "www.barrierfree.us" it says pinging 65.211.112.135 but it also does not respond. BUT if you point your browser to one of the above domain names it will work, but it is quite slow.
