Server :: Group Permissions With In Folder

May 30, 2010

I am running into a Brick wall with this. And thought that the knowledge and expertise here would be a good place to seek help.I have CentOS 5.4 server running Samba on a WinBloZ network. I have the groups all setup and that aspect works fine. But here lies the issues. In a shared directory with group permissions set if someone on the group with permission to this directory creates a file they are the only person that can edit / modify that file. That file need to be editable by the entire group. But the only way thus far I can achieve this is to manually chmod the files in the directory. I know there is a way to fix this, but I have not found it. Can someone please explain how to make this work for me.

Security :: Add A Group Of Users To The Wheel Group?

May 19, 2010

I have a number of users, categorised into various groups. I would like one of those groups ("developers") to be in the wheel group as well. I don't want to just copy the people from the developers group into wheel, because then when that group changes I'll have to change it in two places. Is there a way to specify that anyone in developers is in wheel, and have that be dynamic?

General :: User Can't Access File That Is Accessible By A Group?

Aug 5, 2010

I Want to be able to let my girlfriend view my pictures folder while at the same time keeping my sister out. So I created a group "JessAndI" and made myself and her apart of that group. I changed the group of the directory recursively to "JessAndI" and gave the permissions to 770. She still isn't able to access or even view the directory unless i change the permissions to allow others whether it be 774 or 777. Am i doing something wrong? I've checked and double checked to make sure she is part of the group and the group is the group on the directory and all the sub-directories and files.

Ubuntu :: Removed User From Sudo Group

Sep 23, 2010

I made a mistake on my friend's Ubuntu system when trying to get hard drive permissions right. I wanted to add a user to a certain group with usermod -G, but without realising I should also use -a, with the result that the user is now not longer in the sudo group. This is the only (regular) user on the system, which means I can not sudo usermod again to get it right. So what to do? The only solution I can think of is using a live disc to restore the group belongings, but I want to know if there's a quicker way. Also, I don't know what more groups the user was in. Is there a history? Or else, what are the default groups?

OpenSUSE :: 'users' Is The Default Group For New Users?

Sep 4, 2011

In other Linux distros I've used, new users are assigned to their own group (i.e. user 'joe', group 'joe') by default. To my surprise, when I create new users with my openSUSE 11.4, they are all assigned to the 'users' shared group by default. To test this, I created a new user called 'friends'. From my terminal, I can see how the new user files look like:

joe@linux:~> ls -l /home/friends/
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 2 friends users 4096 Sep 3 11:37 bin

Ubuntu :: Prime User Suddenly Removed From Admin Group?

Mar 10, 2011

Twice today, and several times recently, I have had a sudo command rejected with the dreaded message "<user> is not in the sudoers file..." It's because my user -- which is the main user, the one you create on Ubuntu installation -- has "fallen out of" the admin group. I can fix it because there are other users defined which are still in the admin group and I can su to one of them and add myself back. But why is it happening? I'm doing software development, and use sudo mainly to do benign things like copying new versions of Perl programs into the application library: I'm not going anywhere near the security subsystem, for instance. I'm worried that one day whatever-it-is will choose to drop all the users out of admin and then I'll have to resort to live CD hacking to fix it.

Server :: Apache Authentication: Allow LDAP Group OR User Named Guest But Not All LDAP Users?

May 25, 2011

I am using RackMonkey to map out my lab. Unfortunately, due to RM limitations, every user who accesses the site has write access UNLESS they are logged in as a user named "guest". I currently have Apache allowing only the users (sysadmins) in an LDAP group access to RM, but I would like to allow read-only access for other users as well.I found mod_authn_anon, but I am having trouble combining the two authentication methods. I am using Apache 2.2.18 (compiled myself) on SLES 11.1.

This is the common part:

Code:

AuthType Basic
AuthBasicProvider ldap anon
Order allow,deny
Allow from all

This part by itself works for the LDAP authentication:

Code:

AuthName "System Admins"
AuthLDAPURL "ldaps://example.com/ou=ldap,o=example.com?mail" SSL
Require ldap-group cn=SysAdmins,ou=memberlist,ou=groups,o=example.com

This part works by itself for guest access:

Code:

Anonymous guest
Anonymous_VerifyEmail Off
Anonymous_MustGiveEmail Off
Anonymous_LogEmail on
Require valid-user

But if I have both of the previous blocks enabled at once, then guest access does not work. If I throw in a "Satisfy any", then I am not prompted for a username at all. How can I allow access to this LDAP group and to a user named "guest", but not allow all valid LDAP users to log in?

Server :: Stop Users Moving Up Folder Structure?

I have a Ubuntu 10.10 server; I have created several users and wish them to have their own web space (with a unique domain name for each). I have therefore created www folders within their home folder and created new Virtual Servers to host each domain name and point to the users www folder in their home folder. They can then use an FTP client to upload files. This all works well.

However, I would like to stop a user from going back up a level and traversing the tree. They can currently go back up to /home and see other users names.

Ubuntu :: Auto Map Windows Server Folder For All Users On Systems

Feb 25, 2011

I work for a school district. We are running in a Windows environment with a Windows domain. It was asked of me if I could get an Ubuntu system on our domain and running without issue, as we would like to tinker with the idea of slowly introducing Ubuntu systems to the network.I have a test system here. I added it to the domain using Likewise-Open. I have Samba installed, etc. Here's the next curve ball that I need answered. All user documents are stored in their individual shares on the same Windows server. In Windows, we use re-directed My Documents, so their My Documents actually points to \serverusersob_dole instead of C:/Documents and Settings/Bob Dole/My Documents.

How can we do this in Ubuntu? I don't care if it re-maps the home directory or creates a folder on the desktop that is linked. Either way, I want to log in to ANY Ubuntu system and blam - I have a link to \windowsserverusersmy_share. I want any user on the domain to be able to do that to any Ubuntu system and have a link to THEIR folder on the Windows server.

Ubuntu :: Shared Folder Not Accessible?

May 7, 2010

I'm having an issue setting up users for file sharing. In Ubuntu 10.04 (which is awesome btw) I right click the file, and share it on the network. I can see it right away on other machine, and login using the main user account on the server, no problem. I get an issue when I try to login to the share using additional account I setup. I get to the login screen, and it seems to accept the username and password as being valid (it doesn't bring up the login screen again), instead it brings up a error message saying it's unable to mount the share. It seems so much like a permission issue. I don't want to grant all kinds of access for these users, what do I do?

Security :: Encrypt Folder So It's Accessible To Cron?

Jan 5, 2011

I have a script that crond runs each night. The script pulls some sensitive files from an SFTP server and stores them in a folder on the local machine.I need to encrypt those files on the filesystem. Ideally, I could encrypt the folder they're stored in to require a password whenever the files are accessed. The problem is that then crond wouldn't be able to access the files. Using something like ecryptfs would allow the cron script to mount the encrypted storage by supplying the password, but now the keys to the kingdom are just sitting in a cron shell script.

Is there a good way to approach this? One thought I had was finding a tool that lets cron encrypt the files using a public key, then require a password to decrypt them (silently using the password to access the related private key)I don't want too much complexity on the decryption side, because I will have relatively non-tech people needing to access those files occasionally.
