Apr 24, 2010I might have a different problems as I have a newer laptop, a HP dv6-2170us with intel i5 cpu. I had no wireless with the 2.6.31 kernel so I upgraded to the 2.6.34 and had to manually compile my wireless driver. Everything works great now except the sound issue. I thought it use to work out the box with the old kernel, but then again I might be wrong. I knwo it works in the "other os" dual booting and all. Its a not a huge issue, but hopeing I could resolve it. Here is some of the info from reading some of the other posts. the model=dell-vostro I just tried to see if that works, which is doesnt, so thats why thats in my sound.conf file.

Have I missed anything? I have tried the fix here: Audio coming from both headphone and laptop speakers - Page 3 - openSUSE Forums page 3 about adding a repo and upgrading, but that upgrade wants me to revert back to the older kernel in which case I dont have wireless support or acpi working proporly, so thats not a doable thing for me.

OS is Suse11.3 64Bit with KDE now!
At "System-Settings/Multimedia/Audio Output" there are the following devices in the given order:
HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev1 Analog)
HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev2 Digital)
HDA NVidia, NVIDIA HDMI (HDMI Audio)
That's consistent with the connector layout of the mainboard. Playing "Test sound" while marked the HDMI Audio is not causing any output with HDMI, while analog works just fine!
I also installed the nVidia prop drivers with the packet manager.
In YAST there is one card found in the sound section::
Idex=0 and Card Model=MCP79 High Definition Audio

Dec 29, 2010I have HDMI sound enabled by default in System Configuration (Music, Movies and System Sounds), but the only multimedia application that uses it is DragonPlayer. OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Sound On HDMI Output - No Beeps - No System Sounds ?
Jun 25, 2011I am attempting to set up a machine to use as a movie/video viewer. When I connect this machine using an HDMI cable to an HDMI TV, I get video, but no audio. No beeps, no system sounds, no noise of any kind.
I've run the following mixers and set all volume controls to maximum:Gmixer, Kmix, AlsaMixer and pavucontrol.
When playing a video, pavucontrol meter shows signal from the application and shows output signal to the HDMI device, but where that output is going to is beyond me.
Using the Sound setup of Yast, I attempt to play a test sound on the HDMI, nothing.
Built in Audio adapter works fine. I have disabled it in pavucontrol in attempts to get the sound directed to the HDMI output, but, silence is all I get. I've also tried enabling and disabling simultaneous output with no difference in results.
I've tried a few suggestions from other posts with the same issue (creating /etc/asoundrc.conf, modifying /etc/pulse/default.pa), but no joy.
If I boot up that other operating system (starts with a W), all sounds (system & video) show up on the HDMI input with no adjustments needed.
Why must this be so difficult?

Apr 12, 2010I'm trying to play a HD rip of a film from dvd. It's in mkv format but it doesn't seem to play properly in oS. I've tried using SMplayer and Kaffeine but neither work well. In SMplayer the picture freezes after about 35s but the sound continues. With Kaffein the picture works but I loose the sound after about 15s. In win xp it plays fine.
CPU usage in oS is around 45-50% so it's not maxing out my cpu.

Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.

Sep 1, 2010I have had linux 10.04 installed for a while now and have always had this problem. There is a constant static noise in the background in my headphones, it amplifies whenever I move the mouse or scroll etc.
I have tried searching for a way to fix this but nothing came up that was able to help me. I can't think of any other information I could give,

May 20, 2010I have an HP 8510w laptop and I run ubuntu 10.04 out of an external harddrive.
I have no problem getting video over hdmi using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers however I cannot get sound through the HDMI cable.
I have read around without being able to find a solution.
Running "aplay -l" shows only my intel sound card and also there is no hdmi sound interface in the sound preferences (Only the normal output interface).
I am using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers (Believe it to be 1.95) and the graphics card is a Quadro FX 570.
how I can get sound out to work via the hdmi cable?

Nov 12, 2010I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working fine except I have no sound. When I use the command 'aplay -D hw:0,0 somefile.wav', I can get sound through headphones attached to the headphone jack. But I can't get any sound through the speakers. This is a dual boot desktop and the sound works fine under Windows, so no problems with hardware. The PC monitor is connected through a hdmi cable and I would need sound through the speakers. Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound Over HDMI - GTX 550 Ti
Jun 9, 2011I recently purchased a new video card a GeForce 550 Ti, but I haven't been able to get sound working over HDMI.
I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu (11.04) and have installed the proprietary drivers through Additional Drivers.

ALSA reports that version 1.0.23 is installed, although I thought 11.04 came with version 1.0.24?

Aug 5, 2011i have just recently switched back to Ubuntu and im trying to run my sound through my tv which is connected through my computer using a hdmi cable thats plugged into my EVGA Nvidia GeForce 210 video card ... i have my computer monitor set up as my main screen but i have my tv set up as separate X screen so i can drag over a movie and watch it on the big tv screen and still do things on my monitor ... when i was running windows i was able to get the sound to play through my tv just as i am tryin to do now... does anyone know how i can do this on Ubuntu 10.04

Jan 4, 2010I am having trouble getting sound over hdmi with my Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. The strange thing is that everything works fine in a Live disc, but once I do a fresh install of that Live disc I get no sound, even though my configuration is exactly the same (as far as I can tell). I've checked the little things like alsamixer volumes, aplay -l, etc etc. Everything looks good to me. I can reproduce on multiple TVs so its not the receiver. Video drivers are the same in both live version and installed. aplay -l detects my device. sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c already has my correct vendor id in it. Perhaps the following info can figure out what my installed environment is lacking.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Get HDMI Sound Reliably?
Jan 23, 2010I can't get HDMI sound reliably when using Ubuntu. The strange thing is, if I repeatedly reboot the computer, eventually the sound will work. This can take anything up to 10 reboots. Once working, it will keep on working as long as the machine is not rebooted or shut down. HDMI sound works fine under Windows.
aplay -l will only list the Intel (analogue and S/PDIF) hardware, not the Nvidia, even when it is working. Selecting between analogue and digital output under Sound Preferences has no effect on the HDMI either way.

May 22, 2010Video is ok, but never any sound. I went through and made sure the HDMI is selected as the audio device and I upgraded to the latest driver binary.
HDMI sound works without the ATI proprietary driver installed, but the needed resolution is not available and the picture overlaps the edges on my 32" LCD. At least I know it is not a hardware issue. ALSA is loaded and selected as the sound manager, but the volume controls don't appear in the ALSA slider console.
I tested the cable and display on another computer. I am using a new Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-SH2, it is the integrated video.

Jul 14, 2010I was hoping that upgrading to 10.04 would fix my problems with sound and HDMI but alas it doesn't. I have an HP dv7 that I wish connect via an HDMI cable to my HDTV and play things like Hulu, Boxee, etc. with the sound coming out of my home theater system. I know that the hardware is capable of doing this because I have Windows 7 installed in a dual boot and it has no problems with pumping sound down the HDMI channel.
I've upgraded to Alsa 1.0.23 freshly compiled. With 1.0.23 I see HDMI settings in Pulse Audio Volume Control. However if I start say VLC and play a video, check pavucontrol and make sure the Playback is set to the HDMI channel. I can hook up the HDMI cable and I can see the video playing - but no audio. I've been in and out of all kinds of things like alsamixer, gnome-alsamixer, sound preferences, etc. and I've toggled things on and off in an attempt to get HDMI sound working but nothing works.
In alsamixer if I hit f6 I see my 0 card as HDA Intel and my 1 card as NDA NVidia. If I select NVidia I see only S/PDIF, S/PDIF 1, S/PDIF 2, S/PDIF 3. I can only mute or unmute these. I've tried both - nothing works. Let me know what sort of output/info you need and I'll post it. Here's some info I've seen others post:
