OpenSUSE Install :: What Download Method Is Best For Downloading Suse 11.3 From Website?

Nov 20, 2010

I searched the faq, I did a search online for this etc. The reason I ask is that suse on the download page of 11.3 states don't download directly since it is very slow and has no check sum. Therefore the iso may be flawed and you have spent 10 hrs trying to download the iso. My "fast" internet through qwest is at 1.5 mbps download so I assume that is why it is so slow to download the iso of 4.7 Gb.Now for the question the download page suggets you use bit torrent since it does the checksum but will download the iso no faster than the direct method. Second is to use check metalink with the addon in Firefox downthemall. I did this and had quite a time getting the iso link for 11.3 to start downloading. I would start downthemall from the Firefox toolbar and I thought wow!!! it downloaded that iso fast, how cool. Well it was not the iso but the website for the download page! At one point I got it to start downloading the iso but came in this morining and it was still going after 17hrs and showed several hours to go. I gave up and deleated it.

This afternoon I just gave in and started the download again using the bit torrent and I am waiting for the download to finish. I did eveything the site indicated but after and hour I noticed under logger it said **** openSuse-11.3-DVD i586 iso: PIECE 2206 FAILED HASH CHECK. It shows this same message from the begining of the download 7hrs ago to the last few minutes on each section. It states it is 75% complete? Is this normal or am I wasting 10 more hours? Sorry if this is not the place for this question but I never had trouble with downloading 11.2 and burning it to the disk. I think I just used the Directlink method and crossed my fingers. It did download ok!

Software :: Wget Downloading Pictures From Website

Dec 29, 2010

I'm trying to have wget retrieve the pics from a list of saved URLs. I have a list of facebook profiles from which I need the main profile picture saved. When I pull such up in my browser with the included wget command I see everything just fine; however, when I do it reading in a file (or even manually specifying a page to download), what I receive is the html file with everything intact minus the main photo of the page (that pages' user picture).I believe I need the -A switch, but I think that is what is causing the issues (because the page is not a .jpg, it's getting deleted).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Play Windows Media Streams From A Website?

Sep 15, 2010

I am having problems listening to windows media streams from a particular website ( http://radiotime.com ) whenever I try to listen to a stream from firefox, the page loads then connects but i have no sound (i am actually trying to listen to those two chinese radios [URL].. I have the mplayerplug-in/gecko-mediaplayer installed, but it doesn't work, I tought that maybe there was a problem with that plugin so I deactivated it and installed the vlc plugin, after restarting firefox and trying to listen to those streams again, the vlc plugin tried to read it but it still would not work. I even tried to install the Silverlight Plug-In without any result, does anybody know what I could do to make windows media audio streams work ? it is wierd because i seem to be able to watch windows media video streams from other websites, but i cannot listen to any stream from this one, it used to work for mp3 streams only, but after desinstalling/resinstalling the mplayer plug in, it doesn't work anymore on this website. I can listen to those streams without any problem under windows 7, so the problem isn't coming from the website.

OpenSUSE Network :: NTP And Downloading

Aug 2, 2011

On my 11.3 KDE if I leave the computer alone to download something and come back to check after a while I sometimes find that torrents or usenet downloads have been stopped long ago and kdeapplet displays the wrong time, anything from half and hour to ten hours late. I usually open NTP configuration screen, check if server is accessible and okay out of it and everything goes back to normal by itself, time is corrected and downloads resumed. What could be the reason for stopping downloads and how can I correct this problem? Is NTP the cause or just another symptom of a deeper problem? NTP is set to "now and on boot", interval is set to 5 min - I think those are all default settings.

OpenSUSE :: YaST Keeps Downloading Repodata

Nov 18, 2010

How do I stop YaST from downloading the repodata every time I open the software manager?Even if I have opened it 5 minutes before, YaST still downloads the repomd.xml again. This is also a real pain if I am offline and trying to install an rpm, because I have to wait for it to realise that it can't access the data before it allows me to skip the auto-refresh.By the time that happens I could have installed the software already if I was using a debian or windows based system.

OpenSUSE :: Get Zypp To Apply Deltarpms After Downloading All Of Them?

Feb 2, 2011

By default, when zypp does an update, it downloads a deltarpm and applies it immediately, during which time the internet connection is open and unused. Can I make zypp apply the deltarpms all at the end, only after it has downloaded all of them? I'm used to this sort of behavior on Fedora/yum, and it reduces the window for which I must keep my internet connection open.

Bittorrent takes 2-3 times as long. So, I usually use direct link. I can do the download in about 6-8 hours. The first time, it stopped at 334 megs, using direct link. Using bittorrent, it took about 16 hours. I got a bad checksum. Is there a way I fix the file without downloading it again? Suse 10.4

OpenSUSE Network :: Complete Freeze When Downloading Torrents?

Apr 16, 2011

I'm experiencing complete system freezes when dowloading torrents with more than 800kb/sec (I think this is the limit, I've capped it at 750, and it seems to be running ok now). I had this same problem in Ubuntu aswell. But not in Win 7. The problem also appeared in ubuntu when streaming video through VLC with more than 800kbps.

As my connection gives me quite alot higher download speeds this kind of annoys me, and me being quite new to this whole Linux thing, don't really know what to do. I had a dialogue with someone at Ubuntuforums regarding this, but we pretty much got nowhere.

I have an ASUS 1201N laptop, with ION chipset.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Warnings About Legalities Of Downloading The Codecs/files?

Apr 12, 2011

I put a few Itunes songs into my music folder and tried to play them. It didn't. Then, I got to reading in the forums and noticed that there was a "one click" configuration for Gnome users. After doing some more reading, I saw a lot of references to restricted codecs and things of that nature. After beginning the one-click process and then aborting midway through installation, three questions come to mind:

1) Why all the warnings about legalities of downloading the codecs/files? If I bought the music and I use the codecs to listen to it, where does legalities come into play?

2) While installing some of the different files, etc in the one-click process, I received a few warnings that a particular file was not from a trusted source (I don't remember the info verbatim) and then it gave me an email address, presumably from the developer, and asked if I wanted to install it anyway.

3) If I do go through the one-click process, will I be able to listen to I-tunes or am I pretty much screwed on I-tunes on linux?

OpenSUSE Network :: Some Website's CSS/images Won't Load?

Feb 2, 2009

Ever since switching to openSUSE 11.1, I have been having problems with certain websites (using the version of Firefox that came with openSUSE 11.1). Some website's CSS code won't load until repeated reloads - for example, wachovia.com. I'll visit the website and it will be all distorted because the stylesheets did not load, and I will have to refresh a number of times before it becomes usable. Other website's images won't load until multiple refreshes, like facebook.

Is this an openSUSE issue? An openSUSE interaction with Firefox issue? I've never had this problem on XP or Ubuntu.
