May 23, 2011After update 11.2 to 11.4 copy jobs from netware 5.1 volume to local disk linux system does crash after a couple of seconds. I might have to do if there a allot of small files in that job. If happend system reboot is required because unmount netware volume nor delete copied files to the local linux system is not possible. Recompiling ncpfs package not possible because error free source package ncpfs version 2.2.6 might not be availble.

Ubuntu Servers :: Configuring Samba Permissions To Emulate Netware?
Apr 22, 2010I'm replacing an ancient Netware server with a new Ubuntu 8.04 box running samba and LDAP. I want to see if there's a way to get Samba to emulate the way permissions propagate through Netware. Namely, if I see a directory structure like this:

--- [User Cant See]
------- User Can Edit.txt
------- User CANT Edit.txt
With Netware I can give permission to User to edit "User Can Edit.txt" and the permissions will propagate in reverse to allow User to see the two [User Cant See] directories and edit the text file. "User CANT Edit.txt" will still be invisible to User. This is very convenient as I can simply give user access to one file, they can navigate to it through the directory structure, and all files not explicitly given access to will still be invisible.
With Samba the only way I've been seeing to get this would be to explicitly give User access to both [User Cant See] directories, give him access to the "User Can Edit.txt" and remove any access to "User CANT Edit.txt" and every other file in the latter two nested directories.

May 22, 2011until 2 weeks ago I had o.S11.3 on both my Siemens and Asus laptops. I have installed NX No Machine. ( I know it's not open source,I am using the free version). With commandline ( root) /usr/NX/bin/nxclient I was able to connect to the other machines. I got Qt: Locales not supported on X server, the NX menu popped up and I was able to connect by inserting resp codes. After fresh install of o.S.11.4 on the ASUS the commandline (root) answers:
xlib: connection to":0.0" refused by server
xlib: No protocol specified
nxclient: cannot connect to X server:0.0
The ASUS can still be reached from the other machines (one with o.S.11.3,the third one with o.S.11.2 ) SSH ( Lan)connections are all working forth and back between the machines, even to and from Win XP, however only from Win 7 on the ASUS, but that's a Win7problem. Comparing the installed xorg-x11- server-extra : on o.S. 11.3 Additional X servers ( Xmdx,Xephir,Xnest,Xvfb ) ,on o.S.11.4 the Xvfb is missing, might that be the reason?
OpenSUSE Network :: Esxi Client Cannot Connect To Server
Jan 28, 2010So a while back I was able to mount a directory from my OpenSuse server as a NFS on an Esxi server. After restarting the Esxi server, the NFS became inactive and I was unable to remount it. The error given was that the Esxi client was unable to connect to the Suse server. I was looking into the showmount -a command on the Suse server and it showed the mount point on the Esxi server. Could this be causing the Suse server to reject new attempts to mount the directory? What else can I try to fix this problem? Also I should note that both servers can ping each other.

Jan 20, 2010I have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones

Jan 5, 2010More for my own posterity than anything else, I thought I'd document here the way to get to eDesktop through linux (debian, ubuntu) at the University of West Florida (UWF), since they appear to only support Windows through their documentation on the University web site, and the link through Argus (the secure web site) doesn't work in Linux. This is sometimes needed to use the University resources (libraries and computer programs) from remote locations, and otherwise a google search is fruitless. I had to have a guy in the computer science department show me how to do it.This may apply for other Universities with similar setups.

I tried to connect with Thunderbird and Kmail. Kmal brings up an error message eventually, saying something about a time-out.

I searched everything & everywhere only to see that more people have that same error message come up with Squirrelmail. From my understanding some have fixed the issue but I couldn't actually find a solution to this.

May 2, 2010I am trying (desperately) to setup freeNX so that I can access my Mandriva box from my Macbook over my network. I have great need to be able to do this. Here's the necessary info for you: Mandriva PC: running Mandriva 2010.0 with freeNX installed from the Mandriva repos Macbook: running OS 10.4 with the Nomachine NX Client installed Now, I have followed the setup from the Mandriva wiki as well as the freenx wiki to no avail. I simply cannot connect the Macbook's NX client to the server. I get an authentication failed message. However, I can ssh from the Macbook to the server just fine (that's how I'm getting most of this work done).

CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?
Sep 15, 2009I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!
I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

OpenSUSE :: FIrewall Setup / Client Computer Cannot See NFS Server When Scanning For Server - OSE 11.2?
Apr 21, 2010I have a small home-office network. On that network I have two linux computers, one is a client the other a server.
On the server I have NFS Server setup and mount some NFS exports on the client computer.
On the server I have the firewall on and here it becomes a little tricky.
Since both the server and the client connect to the router the interface (eth1) is theoretically both an internal & external zone.
The router is commercial grade and therefore has a good firewall on it which is also setup. Therefore the firewall on the server is really more of a backup than a necessity. But that's fine, and by having the server's firewall on 'fail2ban' is able to work which I like to have working so I don't want to just turn off the server firewall even though I have good security from the router.
However, when I turn on the server's firewall, the client computer cannot see the NFS server when scanning for server -- done by: clicking on "Choose" next to "NFS Server Hostname" when adding an NFS share in the NFS Client in YaST. Clearly something is being blocked even though I have both "NFS Client" and "NFS Server Service" allowed in the server firewall. The Firewall config. files for these are below.
The Firewall configuration is pretty much "out of the box". That is I have the services I need opened up for the external zone, the other zones are left at their default which means the internal zone, although not used (i.e.: attached to any interface), is completely open.
The perfect solution I guess would be to setup my client computer to connect through a different NIC (perhaps eth0), make that the "Internal Zone" and therefore allow all traffic through to it while still blocking the server from the external zone. However, I cannot make that physical change to my network for now so I am looking for an in between (non-perfect) solution.
In this case I am guessing that means opening up extra NFS ports to the external zone so I have full NFS functionality. I don't mind this because like I said, the router firewall is the main line of defense anyway.
So, given all of the above could someone tell me what I would need to additionally open up in the server firewall to make the NFS server detection work on the client while the firewall was on. Or, if you have a cleverer/better solution without me changing my physical network that would be great.
Hopefully I have written this in enough detail and clearly enough so that all the parameters are clear but if not, feel free to ask me what you like and I'll try to make it clear.

May 4, 2010I'm trying to setup PS3 media server on my new OpenSuse 11.2 and I'm being unable to connect to the PS3. The multimedia server seems to being working ok, only it has not appear on XMB.
I've been searching on PS3 Media Server forums and try a couple of solutions regarding /etc/hosts and adding full qualified domain name of server to it, but it doesn't seems to work.
