Networking :: Selectively Allow Users To Connect?

While using school internet, occasionally I cannot connect to their wireless at all. I know it is definitely the school's doing, under both Windows and Linux, my computer is denied connection for about 30 minutes, then it suddenly works. I always have the same address, but setting a static address does not allow me connection either. Everyone else has no problem connecting, so I am pretty sure the school denied my computer connection.
How can I workaround this? Changing my card's MAC address does not fix the problem. Is there another way to discriminate users?

I have the [HOME] code too, its everything fine with it, and I cant connect with another user ("alfredo") from Red Hat to Windows XP with no problem... but as soon as I double click in "foo" directory, appears this:

Already tried to disconnect from windows the directories with "net use" but it doesn't work

I'm not sure if this is even possible and I've tired searching, but I can't seem to figure it out. I have a few shares setup in Samba. I want them to prompt for a username and password. If an invalid user/pass is entered I want the user to be authenticated as a guest.

I have an ubuntu 11,04 samba domain server, I want to also configure this machine to work as a dhcp server, however this have give me some issues with te windows 7 workstations, my guest is that it have something to do with the iptables because those station do join the samba domain went both server and workstation are conected to a router.
This is the script I use at boot

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password.What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

I have one profile on my Ubuntu machine that I want to eliminate the gnome panel from. When I use the gconf-editor I can change the panel key but it has no effect on my profile. If I set the key as the default it kills the panel on all my other profiles but not on the one I set it from. Anyone have any bright ideas on this?
I suppose I could just auto hide the one left offending panel but I truly wanted to get rid of it entirely. It is irritating having it pop up when I get near the edge of the screen constantly.

I am running Fedora 10 and Win XP SP2 on an Intel PIII machine and couple of weeks ago there was a short on the motherboard. In the result 1 out of 4 USB ports died, 2 show over current change ad 1 seems to work properly. In XP I could disable a "USB adapter" in Device Manager, which removed 3 usb's from the system, but the remaining one, equipped with the hub, works fine. Is there a way to do something like that in Fedora?

I have a really elaborate website project and I'd like to check in all the code to an SVN repository WITHOUT checking in all the jpg, pdf, sql, .mobi files, etc. I have subclipse installed on my local machine as part of Eclipse, but downloading the entire site and doing it file-by-file would take a very long time.
1) check in certain file types in a directory (e.g, /home/foo/public_html) while excluding certain file types (e.g., *.jpg, *.pdf, etc.) and subdirectories (e.g. exclude home/foo/public_html/images) in that directory.
2) I need to specify that this initial checking of my entire project goes into the /trunk folder in my SVN repository -- and not the root, not 'branch' subdir, etc. Also, I need the directory structure of my files to be preserved. that is to say i don't want /includes/conf/config.php to be at the root of my trunk folder in my repository.
3) I need to specify a comment that is applied to all of the files I'm checking in. E.g., "this is the initial checkin dated 12/24/2009, happy holidays!"

I have a Sony Vaio with built-in WiFi. I deemed the built-in WiFi to be flaky, so I installed a WiFi PC Card.bOpenSUSE 11.2 stock GNOME install out of the box, is there a way to disable just the flaky WiFi interface with Network Manager? It seems I can disable all WiFi or enable all WiFi but not individual interfaces selectively. If I connect to my router, the flaky interface wants to act as the dominant interface and makes my connection slow and unreliable.
I hate to make comparisons with Windows, but it's very obvious how to do it there. Is this something I can do with Network Manager or in GNOME? Or is this something deeper, changing configuration files with a text editor or recompiling kernel?

I am running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04. I have been having some problems recently with Pulseaudio, which has traditionally worked fine for me on this netbook actually. Specifically, when I boot the computer, the system will play the "Bongo roll" sound at the GNOME login screen, telling me that sound hardware has been detected and should be working fine.
Yet when I log into the Netbook interface, my volume notification icon has the three blank lines indicating my session does not have access to the sound hardware. Nor do any of the built-in Sound preference panels detect my hardware, only registering dummy output. Finally, the (hopefully) deprecated PulseAudio Device Manager and Volume Control applications also fail to detect my hardware.
However, this problem is inconsistent! It will only happen on certain boots, though the number seems to be hovering around 75% of boots where pulseaduio fails to load correctly. The daemon/service is running, and restarting it only returns:

need all spaces between two letters or a letter and a number exchanged for an underscore, but all spaces between a letter and other characters need to remain. One example for clarity:
Input:

needed Output:

I tried solving this with sed but obviously s/ /_/g does not work, nor does any s/[a-zA-z0-9] [a-zA-z0-9]/[a-zA-z0-9]_[a-zA-z0-9]/g , because you just can't do this...

I think I've got myself into a bit of a situation. I've got 3 operating systems across 2 hard drives, and i need to get them loading properly.
I have my primary ubuntu 8.10 install @
/dev/sda1
I have a new Windows XP install @
/dev/sdb2
And I have a new install of Ubuntu 9.10 @
/dev/sdb3
I'd like to be able to selectively boot into all 3 until I can return my current 8.10 install. Can someone show me how to get my /boot/grub/menu.lst file in order?

I'm trying to get VNC working on Damn Small Linux. I installed the package, and I can get the viewer to work. However what I want to do is get the server working so that I can remote connect to users. When I do connect instead of the active session all I get is a grey screen with an xterm window. I've done a lot of searching for this, but cannot seem to find a good answer. What I'd like to do is connect to the native X session. I've tried changing things in the xstartup file to things such as "-display :0" but it still doesn't work.

I have a CentOS dedicated server running ProFTP. I have created user accounts which are meant for FTP access only but the users cannot connect to the FTP unless their shell access is /bin/bash
Here is an example line that is outputted when I use this command:
This user can access the FTP fine, but he can also access SSH which I don't want to allow him to do. If I set his shell access to /bin/false then he can't connect to the FTP.
What can I use in instead of /bin/bash to allow FTP but don't allow SSH?

I've a Windows 7 host OS and I've installed Fedora 11 as a Virtual OS using Virtualbox.I want a friend of mine to connect to my Fedora server using telnet from internet. What I would like to know is how do i configure my Virtualbox to allow my friend to connect to my server. Also, is there any setting I need to change in Fedora to allow this?

The process highlighted in red on picture 2 is the one started when a user click on connecting. It fails to start on 11.4 - probably due to my own mistake (?) but I don't know. I could start virt-manager with gnomesu, kdesu or xdg-su -c, that would just start the program as root, but it shouldn't be necessary

However users outside of my network are unable to connect to the server (get Timeout error). I`am just trying to connect Samba with ldap to make it simpler for the users to log in. We have already attached squid, so by that we thought it would be easy to do the same with samba. I think we did something wrong with the ldap config for the os with is btw:

I am trying to setup a dhcp server for my internal network. I have two NICs, a modem, and a wireless router. I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router.
