I am trying to redirect connection to port 8980 to execute a telnet command to a local machine
by issuing the following command :
In Server 1 :
socat TCP-LISTEN:8980,fork EXEC:/myscript,reuseaddr
My script contains
#!/bin/bash
telnet 192.168.20.12 //local Server 2
I am sending Binary data from the client to Server 2 via Server 1. So it happens that I have some characters in Hex translated to special characters in ASCII like open brackets or Commas etc.. and that closed the socket between the two machines.

we have a minor issue with time synchronization in proprietary equipment.the client needs to synchronize time with server, but not using NTP.it is not very important so doesn't need to be done often.the problem is that it won't synchronize. I can see the server is sending tcp packet with date&time, but the client ignores it.I suspect the problem is in format (manual specifies there are two possible options like MM: DD: YYYY and so on, but server seems to use some other)Is there an easy way to run some program in Linux Debian, to send that simple packet with correct date?

This is a recent problem, and I can't pinpoint any change/upgrade that would cause this. Rsync transfer from Client to Server:
sent 11756196 bytes received 1032741 bytes 138258.78 bytes/sec
total size is 144333466390 speedup is 11285.81
Pinging back and forth from each machine is fine. No Ifconfig errors Client, but Server has RX packet errors.

My rsync takes backup of everything from the differenct linux servers to my backup device which is 2 TB only .Since it takes almost full backup of source , it consumes space lot in the backupdevice. So i wanted to keep all my backup files of one month old latest files in backup device, it should remove all files more than one month data.

I'm working on testing some software, and I have a question. We have several files of binary data that we need to push through our application to test. It communicates via simple TCP sockets. Is there a way I can send this data to the socket from the command line? I tried doing something like this, but telnet never picked up the data.

I am writing a code in Python where a socket client changes data with the server. That works nice if the connection is up. However it is also supposed to work offline. So I need to be able to detect if the connection is up before sending data, but I was not able to do so. A summary of the code is like that:
Code:
try:
socket = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
socket.connect( (self.host, self.port) )
connected = True
except:
connected = False
if connected:
data = "some data byte"
try:
socket.send(data)
except:
connected=False
socket.close()
If I unplug the cable after the connection is ready then the socket sends data and does not detect the connection failure. What is amazing is that the client detects the connection failure just after the cable has been plugged again. Of course there is a loop in the code above and always that connected==False a new connection is made. How could the program detect the connection failure before sending data and then lead the code to an exception?

I have 3 option: SSH, IPSEC and Kerberos.
Which one in your opinion should be most secure solution?

I'm trying to using rsync to backup some files, about half a TB. It's now it a state where it keeps sending the same files everytime it runs. for example:
rsync -av /data/source/* user@host:/data/dest
sending incremental file list
source/file1.txt
source/file2.txt
I then verify those files are copied over. then the next time it runs it does the same thing
rsync -av /data/source/* user@host:/data/dest
sending incremental file list
source/file1.txt
source/file2.txt
any idea why it's getting stuck on these files? I've tried to wipe the whole dest directory out and start over but no luck.

I received the following output from an rsync (3.0.0) command that was executed:
sending incremental file list
sent 77214 bytes received 484 bytes 155396.00 bytes/sec
total size is 254531170 speedup is 3275.90
What does "sending incremental file list" mean?

I am writing a TCP server in C, and the server listens to incoming client connections and accepts them. It then creates a thread to handle the client. The clients are expected to only receive data from my server and not send any data. So if I use a select() call with a recv(), I believe that the recv() will just block forever since there will not be any data coming from the client. If I use a non-blocking recv(), then this will just return a 0 which tells me nothing because the client is not expected to send any data. I am not sure if I have misunderstood some socket concepts, but I need a solution to detect when the client has disconnected so that I can close the socket and stop sending data to the client. As I understand it, simple ACKs etc are not captured by the recv(), and only data sent by the client will cause recv() to return a non-zero value, so I am not sure how to know when the client has disconnected.

I have a tiny shell script to rsync files between two servers and remove the source files.
This script works fine, when it has been initiated manually or even when the rsync command is executed on the command line.
But the same script doesn't work, when I try to automate it through crontab.
I am using 'abc' user to execute this rsync, instead of root, as root login to servers are restricted in all of our servers, by us.
As I mentioned earlier, manual execution works like charm!
When this rsync.sh is initiated through crontab, it runs the first command(chown abc.abc ...) perfectly without any issues. But the second line is not at all executed, and there is no log entry i can find at /mnt/xyz/folder/rsync.log.

I just tried to sync files from one server to another. After the sync process, I found the files are bigger than original ones.
I looked up the web and found someone mentions the rsync daemon. So I have to run the daemon on one server before I run the rsync?
The command I used is rsync --partial --progress -r source destination

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server and Postgresql 8.4. I have a .sh script that is run by cron every other hour. That works fine. The .sh script includes an rsync command that copies a postgresql dump .tar file to a remote archive location via ssh. That fails when run by cron; I think because it is (quietly) asking for the remote user's password (and not getting it). I set up the public/private ssh key arrangement. The script succeeds when run manually as the same user that the cron job uses, and does not ask for the password. I am able to ssh to the remote server from the source server (using the same username) and not get the password prompt (both directions), so why doesn't rsync work? I even put a .pgpass file in the root of that user's directory with that user's password, and the user/password are identical on both servers.
I think the problem is rsync is not able to use the ssh key correctly. I tried adding this to my script but it didn't help.
Code:
Here is the rsync command embedding in the .sh script.
Code:
Here is the cron entry:

In order to debug a problem, I want to list down as many as possible reasons of a server (SOAP server running on Fedora 10) sneding RST in middle of packet transfer. Please note that in my case, SYN and ACK of initial handshake went through. Server received request from client and started data transfer but then suddenly, server sent RST in between data transfer.

I am coding a http server which has to send the file(s) such as images, .avi files, .mpeg, that the client is going to request. I have been trying of sending files through sockets.
char info [256];
bzero(info, 256);
//memset(&info,0,sizeof(info));
read(socket, info, 255);
write(socket, HTTP, 255);
FILE *fl= fopen(info,"rb");
fseek(fl, 0, SEEK_END);
long len = ftell(fl);
printf("largo: %ld", len);
unsigned char *ret = (char*) malloc(len);
fseek(fl, 0, SEEK_SET);
fread(ret, 1, len, fl);
However, it's supposed to be shown in Mozilla Firefox (as the client). But it is not doing it, so.. It's just not getting the complete file.

I am seeing log messages that I don't understand. If I run tail -f /var/log/messages, some times I will see this this sort of repeating pattern. I don't know if I have cut at the start of the sequence or not. Incidentally, this is a normaly well-behaved client/host.
[Code].....
Why is the client repeatedly sending the (1/4) message and then timing out?
