View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm posted recently about the One Touch meter, but I'm now looking at the Free Style and the Bayer Contour meters.
I'm curious if anyone has made any of the above work under Linux, preferably Ubuntu.
The Bayer Contour USB plugs directly into the USB port so no proprietary cable is necessary. Their listed specs show that the software works under Windows and OS X, so maybe their headed in the right direction.
If I can access the data on the meter and make sense out of it, I should be able to at least put it in a spreadsheet even if I have to copy and paste or manually enter the data.
So, if anyone has made either of the above work, or knows of a brand name meter that will work, it would be helpful.
I use MS Works a windows application because the database is better for me than the open office database. I can run ms works using wine but how can I print? I get the message that the driver for my printer ( canon MP270) is not installed. I have installed the driver for ubuntu to print. I cant instal the driver from the manufacturers cd as it wont let me change the permission to execute.

And that infrastructure is not only ripe for a variety of attacks, but is not easily fixable, a group of experts said Friday. At a forum on browser security sponsored by a Washington policy think tank, a group of technologists and policy experts from industry and government outlined the serious architectural and implementation problems with SSL, the certificate authority infrastructure and the way that browsers handle certificates. It was not a pretty picture. The problems extend from the way that CAs issue certificates to how certificates are handled by the major browsers to the way that attackers are able to take advantage of the weaknesses throughout the system.

I am an undergraduate student doing some work in Cambridge, MA on NS2. As my project/paper relates to simulating different types of applications like FTP, RTP, and SIP, as they relate to commercial products (VoIP, email, bittorrent, http) and congestion, I was wondering if anyone knows of any simulation models already available besides the example ones released by NS2 and the contributed code found at [URL]. Also, does anyone know of any tcl scripts that simulate specific applications (including the transport layer and Internet layer)? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and NS2 2.34

New applesmc kernel module with dynamic configuration. The amount of machines supported by this module has increased rapidly over the past years, and the detailed driver support of the many flavors is quickly becoming a problem. The attached dkms package contains a new, dynamically configured driver which fixes a number of outstanding issues:
* Support for all new models since MacbookPro 6.
* Support for variable number of processors in the MacPros.
* Handles the odd temperature sensor types found on new models.
* Fixes minor read problems on many intermediate models.
And, of course, all models back to the MacBook1,1 should work at least as well as before. Please test and report the outcome in this thread, stating your machine model and a simple "OK" or a description of the problem. As soon as things seem to work as expected, the patches will go upstream.
I wonder what are models and makes of good internal SATA or IDE DVD-CD burners. I'd like to get one for my desktop tower since I've only had CD burners before. For burning, I use k3b and I'd be doing more CD burning than DVD burning but would also use the burner to watch a DVD movie now and then.
I'd prefer one that isn't too fussy about media. In other words, I'd be happy to have one that takes and plays nicely with commonly found media, rather than with exotic, hard-to-find media. And a burner that handles a good range of the various DVD formats would be nice too.
I don't need LightScribe because I figure it will only work for Windows users. Yes or No? [But does Linux have some package that lets this LightScribing work?]
[My OS is MEPIS 8.5, a Debian-based OS which uses Synaptic for package downloading and installation.] Tell me what good luck you've had with burner and tell what makes/models to avoid.
What are the pros and cons of each? I am just trying to make some models of different types of users and be able to scale.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a PC for windows connected to my printer. On another PC I just installed & using 10.04 LTS. First of all I am unable to get Ubuntu to find, recognize & install the DCP 395 CN. Linux appears to recognize the MSHOME but does not have my printer listed in the Brother models? This is a wired system consisting of 2 computers through a dsl broadband router. The DCP 395 printer is connected to the Windows PC by USB, if that makes any difference . Would like to connect to the MSHOME or establish a Network that will work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm buying this unit from deal extreme: it's a bitorrent downloader, with NAS capability. I'm interested in sharing an external HD in it, with media and backup purposes. I'm afraid of energy problems (don't know if this is the correct term), corrupting my mounted drives (like after a storm), so I thought about buying an UPS that sends a "signal" to my Linux box, and a script in my Linux box would unmout everything to avoid problems.Do this "UPS signal" feature exists? Do you have model suggestions?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an old mini-desktop computer I want to have as a spare machine for internet browsing and checking email. It has a copy of XP currently, but the previous owner didn't put the key in so I can't get onto it at all. I plan on putting linux on it, just not sure what it can handle. It has 384 megs of RAM I believe, and the processor is a via C3, so I'm not even sure if I can run linux on it. I've checked the faqs and googled a bit, but I can't tell if it's i486, i586, or one of those things, and I'm not sure what linux distros(if any) are compatible. Will linux mint be able to run on a 900mhz processor of this sort and 384 megs of RAM? I'm thinking no, but it's the only linux distro I've dabbled with before. If not, will ubuntu? Will opensuse?

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhat is the best scanner to use with ubuntu 10.04 LTS were drivers that come with Ubuntu are compatible.
Recently purchases a Brother Laser printer model 2142, drivers were already install, I am very impressed with Ubuntu, surpasses windows as I was a hard core windows user.
Last time I bought a new computer (I build them myself) I got a motherboard that had really poor linux support for a long time. Specifically the audio. I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around.
I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why?
AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference?
To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are:
Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server?
Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056"
I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this?
The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.

I'm looking for an overview of binary compatible linux derivates to enterprise Linux versions. A usable definition of this compatibility is given on Wikipedia. I already know candidates for this:
CentOS (Community ENTerprise
Operating System) is binary
compatible to RHEL (Red Hat
Enterprise Linux).
SL (Scientific Linux) is binary
compatible to RHEL (Red Hat
Enterprise Linux).
I think there are for sure many more. Who can help? Maybe this will grow into a fine overview... I'd like to edit the question to complete it with the data from answers.
I need a WiFi dongle for Ubuntu and most people at the shops only know if its compatible with windows
