View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a compaq c784tu and it was shitty with xp. Vista is quite crap, so i turned over to ubuntu 10.4. The configuration of the laptop is: 1.73 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2370 with 1-MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB featuring Intel Mobile 945GML Express Chipset Motherboard, 2-GB PC2-5300 DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM (Maximum 4-GB in 2 slots), a 160-GB SATA 5400 rpm Hard Disk Drive and 8x Super Multi Double Layer (8.5 GB) Slot-in DVD Writer.Everything worked like a charm and I was able to connect to the internet through a public wifi network. However, I came home this week to my mothers house, where they have a dsl-router to connect to the internet whih uses bridge mode pppoe. I tried to connect to the internet through it, and it initially couldnt. However, I got around that by doing a clean install of ubuntu. I was able to then connect to the internet using "sudo pppoeconf" and "sudo pon dsl-provider"One night the network manager app on the top left disappeared and would not come on. I figured I had fried my wifi adapter, however, lspci -v confirmed its presence.Further, "system>admn>system testing" detected the adapter aswell. I tried the iwconfig command in the terminal the result was:
lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions

About two days ago was when I was last able to connect wirelessly. I cannot recall a change I made to the system that would have caused this problem. Items to consider:
1. Under Network Manager, I am unable to click "Wireless Networks"
2. I ran the following code under in the terminal (sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod) and proceeded to run enter BIOS where I enabled the Network Driver.
3. I am still unable to get the "Wireless Networks" to even be selectable under the Network Manager
4. When I return to BIOS, the computer shuts down immediately.
5. The start-up menu won't allow me access.
6. I have an HP G60-445DX notebook and an MCP77 Ethernet..

How can I start dhcpd after Network manager has set up a new connected device. The reason being that dhcpd will not start when there is nothing connected to the network interface. Therefore I would like dhcpd to start after a new device is connected. Now I have found references if ifup-post but this does not relate to NM, is this correct?

I've got a little server setup on my local network and I'm trying to configure it to use miredo. I've got my laptop successfully using it, but for some reason miredo gives this error when I try to start it:
Code:
Error: IPv6 stack not available.
also running "lsmod | grep ipv6" gives these results
Code:
ipv6 270049 1 cnic
xfrm_nalgo 13381 1 ipv6
I get the impression that ipv6 is not enabled on my server, but I'm not sure how I enable it short of doing a reinstall.
When I enable my ufw it completely shuts me out and I have no internet connection. When I do:
Code:
sudo ufw status numbered
I get:
Status: active
To Action From

[ 1] 80 ALLOW IN Anywhere
[ 2] 80 ALLOW OUT Anywhere (out)
But I need to disable my ufw in order to reconnect back to the internet. Why is that? Doesn't the above rules indicate that I should have inbound and outbound traffic even if my firewall is up?
I just fresh installed Fedora 11, and tried to connect via ethernet. I connected the cable and connection was started (in the network managed the two gray circled turned green) but then instead of connecting me the connection was aborted. I just installed Fedora 13 on my desktop computer and ran into the same problems I did when I tried to install which was i could connect to a network but couldn't access the internet. I decided to install Fedora 14 since I already installed it on my laptop. I'm still running into the same issue, I can connect to my network but cannot connect to the internet using my PCI NIC or onboard NIC. Networking is enabled and I'm getting a IP address from my router. I ran "lspci" and it shows me both network cards which, please correct me if I'm wrong, makes me think that the drivers are installed.
I'm also curious if the VNC client/server could be used through a WAN. I would like to remote into my computer at home when I'm not there and see the gui. I had SSH installed at one point but it was just text. If there is better program please let me know. why I would have Services on my laptop but not on my desktop? Both computers are running the same version. Both cards are enabled and set to connect automatically. I can get a IP with both NICs. I only have one plugged in at a time.
I installed 9.04 clean yesterday to try and once again move from Windows to Linux and I thought I would give it a real try this time to learn the new OS. Well, right off the bat my wireless connection does not work. By default my WPA/WPK security was set on my router. My wireless adapter does connect to the router but there is no internet access. If I remove the WPA/WPK security and leave it open I can connect and I do have internet access but as soon as I re-enable WPA/WPK security I lose internet access. I even tried WEP security and same result. What the heck is going on with this? I am not going to leave my router unsecured but that seems to be the only way this works. I also upgraded this morning to 9.10 and same problem so this is not limited to 9.04.

I have two dual-booted Windows/Ubuntu machines--one desktop and one laptop--and both have SSH servers installed. At home, I use port-forwarding to connect to these servers externally.
I am interested however, in being able to connect to my laptop's ssh server no matter where it is. I am interested in this partly due to anti-theft precautions and partly just curiosity. I know there is anti theft software that lets you remotely modify your computer--from ANY IP address--and I want to know if you can do this with SSH. Imagine someone stole my laptop and connected to the internet in a random location. Assuming i somehow know this ip address, is there any way I could SSH to it? (I doubt the router would forward port 22 or whatever to this computer...)

At this point, I have installed the STA driver for the device, though I have also tried with B43 (fwcutter). I have also tried with ndiswrapper with windows driver. All these cases, the end effect is the same.
I can see "Wi-fi" LED light up. When I bring up the KDE control module for networks, "Wireless" is disabled. However, when I right-click on the network manager icon on the taskbar, I see "Enable Wireless" checked on.
I am wondering if in the process of installing the ndiswrapprer drivers, I am messed up something?
I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 a few days ago. My internet then stopped working.I changed the security for my network to WEP (instead of WPA)Is there another way around this problem or can I just download another driver? I do not intend to stick with a WEP secured network.

I know this is not a bug in any kernel or anything. I now have Karmic on two identical laptops (Fujitsu Siemens AMILO, rt2500pci chipset) with the same kernel (2.6.31-22-generic). Wireless is enabled on one, disabled on the other. This is wearing me out... I am on the verge of buying Windows 7...
After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 via the online upgrading method I had much trouble getting wireless to work but after following the instructions at .Driver/bcm43xx it burst into life, that is until I powered off and now I have to sudo modprobe b43 before the hardware button for the wifi will work and and then I am able to get online. This is for every power on session!! Once enabled it will switch on and off via the hardware button and the light is operational. Before the sudo modprobe b43 the buttonoes something as evidenced by sudo rfkill list after each press of the button. Is there any way to have the command sudo modprobe b43 inserted somewhere in the power on sequence? This was a working function on 10.10!
