Networking :: ISCSI Suitable To Move Data Between IP's Rather Than Between 192.168.xxx.xxx And 192.168.xxx.xxy?
Mar 7, 2010
I have been trying to learn iSCSI from google but there is one main point that remains unclear. Is iSCSI suitable to move data between IP of [URL] and IP of [URL] rather than between 192.168.xxx.xxx and 192.168.xxx.xxy?

I have never done this before but stood up a new Debian (testing) x64 system. It only has 146GB available for RAID1 so I created a 500GB iSCSI LUN on my NAS device on the network and am really confused how I can attach my Debian to the iSCSI LUN I created. Right now the OS is installed all locally on the machine but I would like the iSCSI LUN to be the /home directory for mail storage. Is this possible or do I need to mount the LUN to a newly created folder / mount point that is locally attached?

I would like to know if there's a way to copy my 500GB HDD data onto a 1TB HDD. Is there a quick way to do this?? Or will I have to install CENTOS on the 1TB HDD and then move the data across? Reason for doing this is because I am running out of disk space.

Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried every method I can find and none work. Here's what I know...
1. My /etc/my.cnf is ignored. I can even delete it and phpmyadmin continues to work as it did before.
2. If I move /var/lib/mysql and replace it with a new directory (chowned to mysql:mysql so it looks like it's got the same ownership & permissions as the original) I get a write permission problem, e.g.
Quote:
What I ultimately want to do is used existing database files on a FAT32 partition but I can't even get to first base.

I'm running NetWare SLES 10 sp3 with OES2 sp2. I was working with the folks at Novell to resolve an iPrint Print Manager problem.
During the process they wanted to perform a packet capture using tcpdump. While logged in as the root user the error no suitable device was found, and I received no data at all. This server is running on a VMWare Center. On other SLES 10 sp3 systems (residing on that same VMWre Center), tcpdump captures packets just fine. I inherited all of these servers, so I wasn't here during the initial build, but I'd make the guess that they were configured similarly. On a Server that I built recently, tcpdump works fine. On two of my Servers it does not, and gives the mentioned error.
It's not that big a deal, otherwise the Servers are communicating and working just fine. But, I'd like to get it working just because it's supposed to work. Students are off for the summer, so I have time to play.

I have a problem here for which I am unable to find any relevant info on google. I have an openfiler server and another server which is running OEL(redhat5). When i give the following command iscsiadm -m discovery -t sendtargets -p 192.168.2.13it only gives me one line output which is:192.168.2.13:3260,1 iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:tsn.03821172572cNone of the mapped LUNS gets identified neither it shows me any message that it is connecting. I have setup CHAP in openfiler to accept an incoming user plus gave access to my OEL server.Any feedback is helpful. If you need the contents of /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf file let me know

I am having a situation with an NTPD server.
Code:
remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter
plesk2.datacent .INIT. 16 u - 64 0 0.000 0.000 0.000
91.198.87.118.b .INIT. 16 u - 64 0 0.000 0.000 0.000
core.fr.zeroloo .INIT. 16 u - 64 0 0.000 0.000 0.000
178-26-105-100- .INIT. 16 u - 64 0 0.000 0.000 0.000
and it remains so no matter how long I wait...
Hoping to get better results with ntpdate, I stopped NTPS and tried :
Code:
# ntpdate ntp.skynet.be
29 Mar 09:12:26 ntpdate[4715]: no server suitable for synchronization found
# ntpdate -ud ntp.skynet.be
29 Mar 09:14:02 ntpdate[4814]: ntpdate 4.2.4p4@1.1520-o Sun Nov 22 16:14:35 UTC 2009 (1)
transmit(195.13.23.5)
receive(195.13.23.5) .....
I am running Debian Lenny 64b, and every packages are totally updated. I have 25 identical servers. And there is just one giving me this problem. From what I see, it is not a connection/FW issue since ntpdate get replies from the ntp server (ntp.skynet.be is my isp's stratum 2 ntp server).

Does anyone have any good articles on mounting a Ubuntu volume as an iSCSI share on a windows box? Originally I was just going to use a SAMBA share but it turns out samba has issues with my lan security. So I thought since all I really want to do is create the share on my backup server that an iSCSI device would do. Been using the following article with limited success... [URL]

Im trying to find out What all network hardware is required for a successfull Iscsi setup. Example Do you need two network cards that support it. Or do you just need one network Iscsi adapter for the storage box, and the other machine just have a normal NIC. What type of Switch would be needed as well for decent transfer rates.

one thing I'm not quite certain about is suitable limit rates for SYN, LOG & ping flood prevention. I suppose it depends a bit on traffic, as well as bandwidth. However, I don't want to limit the former. FWIW, I expect about as much traffic as a country road in the middle of nowhere, and my bandwidth for requests is 15 Mbps (Don't laugh. Content delivery is a pathetic 2 Mbps. That's a residential cable connection for ya...)Of all the tutorials/examples, I chose to go with Rusty Russel's limits, though they're dated 2002. Thus an excerpt of my firewall "script":
Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Saved in /etc/init.d, runlevels 2 3 4 5

I have just spent dome time using gparted to sort out my partitions. I have a vista partition, a fedora one and a big chunk of unallocated space I wish to use as my data drive.
I want to move my ~ folder to the new partition and have windows/vista access the folder and write to the Documents, Downloads folders etc.
What is the best format to use?
Also I plan to start backing up my partitions to a server, for instance using g4l to save a linux image (maby a windose one too). Is there any benifit in keeping all the hidden files (ones starting with period '.') i.e moving the whole ~ folder or would I be best off leaving the ~ dir and moving the folders I know i use such as ~/Downloads, ~/Documents etc?
And how should i preform the move of all these files? 'mv'? do i need to add any special options?

I just installed F13 x86_64 on a system that used to be running Windows 7.
The boot drive is a SATA drive attached to the motherboard which is working fine.
However, my data drive is an NTFS partition filling a 3.6TB SATA raid.
It's GPT--Gparted sees 3 unknown partitions, and gdisk shows:
Code:
How do I mount this in Fedora 13? I had intended to shrink the NTFS partition so that I can create an ext4 partition to move the data to. Will this be possible?
I've got a LOT of valuable data on this drive, and nothing else big enough to store it.

Code:
serialfd = open( serialPortName.c_str(), O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY);

For Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2.
I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.
HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:
- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.
- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.
How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?

So far I have been using 32 bit ubuntu in my IBM ThinkCentre - 2.5 GB RAM, Intel Pentium Dual Core inside (1.60 GHz X 2) machine. Now I am coming to Debian soon. As a student I am involved in processing lot of satellite imagery for my project work. Therefore a friend recommended me to use 64 bit OS as it would make image processing faster. Is my hardware sufficient for that?

I have an iSCSI target on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server that is giving me access to 3 x 2TB volumes. I am using LVM to create 1 big volume and using it as a place for my backup software to write to. Upon initial setup I tested to see if the connection would still be there after a reboot, and it was. After going through the trouble of configuring my backup software (ZManda) and doing a few very large backups I had to reboot my SAN (OpenFiler) for hardware reasons. I took my server down while performing the maintenance and brought it back up only after the SAN work was done. Now, the LVM volume is listed as "not found" when booting.
Using iscsiadm I can see the target but LVM doesn't know of any volumes that exist using those targets. I need to get it back up and running and then troubleshoot the reboot issue.

I'm trying to increase the size of an iSCSI device. On the LUN side, the provision size has been expanded already. I expanded the size of this device from 15GB to 30GB.
I then rescanned the devices:

I just want to be able to create a partition on my server, define it as a target, and then have my client initiator mount it.

want to create a iSCSI connection which mounts /home directory to a share on my NAS via iSCSI. Does anyone know if this is possible on a RHEL 5.4 machine? I am building the server from scratch and then creating the iSCSI mount point in /etc/fstab. After the /home directory is mounted on the mail server, I will copy all the mailboxes over to the /home directory via iSCSI.

Im just wondering what everyone's experiences are with the latest Ubuntu 10.04 version? Is it stable enough for a working environment? I require it for web development, so using VMs, IDEs, connecting to VPNs, SSH to servers, etc. Im currently using 9.04 and found 9.10 unstable and problematic at times (such as problems connecting to VPN)
