But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.

Dec 9, 2010I'm wondering if I can use netcat to listen to a UDP port and display ALL incoming packets, no matter where they're from. If I just do 'nc -u -l 1234' then netcat will listen for incoming packets and connect() to the source address of the first one it sees (I can see this with strace). Is there any (standard) way to stop the connect() call? I can make a hack to block connect() with a function of my own, but that'd be ugly

Jul 27, 2010I've tried to use netcat in the past and assumed it was my stupidity that was preventing it from working... but this is getting ridiculous. I'll execute nc -l 3333 on a server at 192.168.0.105 (after opening it on the firewall of course) then I run nc 192.168.0.105 3333 on my laptop (from 192.168.0.101). and nothing happens... i start typing and nothing comes up on the terminal.
I run nc -z 192.168.0.105 80 which should ideally do a port scan of port 80 on that server (of which I'm running a web server that clearly works) but it doesnt even give me any feedback. Nothing happens. Now when I use the verbose flag i see that I am indeed connecting to the specified port on the server successfully (so the port scan one is a success but only with the verbose flag... which shouldnt be the case I believe). But still once I have the server listening and the laptop connected... I type in both windows and nothing happens...

LAN (10.1.x.x subnet 255.255.0.0), and2. my internet public (IP 202.xx.xxx.xxxx subnet 255.255.255.240)I have an application in my LAN PC (10.1.2.240) which broadcast udp packet to its client. The client in my LAN can receive the udp packet, no problem.My question is how netcat/socat can RELAY the udp broadcast packet to one of my IP public address so the message can be received by other client from internet ?

Apr 11, 2011i have 3 servers in 2 dcs as follows; server 1 (dc1 - dmz) --- server 2 (dc1 - internal) --- server 3 (dc2 - internal) Now I have an application in server1 that have to connect to port 44000 in server 3 but dc refuse to open connection saying they do not open connections between dmz and dc2 (i have no say over this).
However I can connect to virtually any port from server1 <-> server2 and also server2 <-> server3. Is it possible to do something like;
server1 <-> server2 <-> server3:44000 using nc to get the app work.

Nov 21, 2010I made a simple proxy using netcat and it works great, the idea is to make the server and client communicate through two named pipes, file1, file2.
$ mknod file1 p
$ mknod file2 p
$ nc -l -p 12345 0<file1 1>file2 &
$ nc 192.168.2.118 80 1>file1 0<file2 &
The problem Im facing is that I cant seem to intercept the data going between the client and the server. I want to be able to have the data coming to the server in a variable, manipulate it and send it to the client, and the other way, have the data coming to the client in a variable, manipulate it and send it to the server.
Im running on an embedded device where tee, awk and many other commands are absent. how can I redirect the data to a variable, manipulate it and pass it to the other side, that is the question.
OpenSUSE Network :: Nmblookup Resolves But Cannot Ping Netbios Names Or Ping FQDN
Feb 23, 2011This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.

Ultimately my DB will run in VM2 and any DB requests coming in at 2055 of VM1 should be forwarded to port 2055 of VM2. Since I do not yet have a DB running I am trying to test with netcat.
Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Ping Over Wireless But Can Ping Over Wired?
Jul 24, 2010I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.
Networking :: BIND9 SLOW Ping When Ping By Hostname
Feb 1, 2011I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.
I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.
I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.

Apr 29, 2010So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address.But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.

May 26, 2010I have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.

May 21, 2009I have connected xp and fedora through crossover cable . xp has ip address 192.168.0.1/24 (manually assigned) fedora has 192.168.0.2/24 with default route equal to 192.168.0.1
I can ping fedora from xp computer but i can't able to ping xp from fedora computer.
I have manully edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with correct subnet mask and ip address because when i tried to give ip address manully in network manager the subnetmask is replaced with gateway address don't know why.
Now i want to share internet through crossover cable . xp is connected to internet through wireless usb adapeter.

Aug 10, 2010I have a OpenSUSE 10.1 system on my college network and I am able to ssh to other college servers, but I cannot ping these servers. More importantly than pinging when I try install one particular program it needs to be able to access one of the college servers (which has the license for it) but it is not able to contact the server.I have installed this program on other computers (windows and redhat linux) on the college network and they can connect to the server (and they can also ping the server).But Idon't know how to fix this problem.I have googled lots of things but I am a bit bamboozled.I have turned off the firewall but it doesn't make a difference.

Let's say I have file on computer B and I want to send it to A but not the way I wrote above, but by making computer that's supposed to receive file (A) be 'listening' server and connect computer that's 'sending' file (B) to server and send the file? Is it possible? I think it might be but I'm not sure how to do this.
In case my above explanation is messed up: How do I send file TO 'server' instead of serving the file on server and then taking it FROM it (like I did above)?

Jul 11, 2011I am trying to get a Linux (Slackware 13.37) working in a Windows networking environment. The IT support for this organisation does not extend to Linux support, so I'm limited in what help I can get for this.
I'm trying to get to the point where I can get to the internet to download what I need on this Linux machine.
The situation is this (*fictitious addresses used) -My Linux machine uses a fixed IP address (10.100.150.21)
My Windows machine uses a DHCP assigned IP address (10.100.150.213)Both Linux and Windows machine are configured to access the gateway server (10.100.150.1)So, I can ping the Linux machine from the Windows machine and vice-versa.I can ping the gateway machine from the Windows machine.I can browse Windows Shares on the network via SMB from the Linux machine.I CANNOT ping the gateway machine from the Linux machine with the Destination Host Unreachable message being the error message.
For actual internet access I need to access a proxy server but since the Linux machine can't even ping the gateway server, it fails to ping the proxy.Now, I have been told the gateway is a HW based router and for Windows machine they use some software for authentication to connect to the network. This software isn't available for Linux, so that's why I've been told to use a fixed IP address.My experience of networking is pretty basic and most of the Linux setup is done via running Slackware's setup program.

Further digging showed that the target hard drive was less in space by 100 kb. Both are 1 T drives seagte but different models, hence the diff in space maybe.The data on the original drive is only 900 GB.
