Software :: Mplayer Cache Option Reduces Performance

Mar 11, 2010

I needed a larger cache because I have some videos stored on another samba server and it's laggy. I set options: cache=20000, cache-min=10 , and that helped to play those videos smoothly, but that caused all 1280x720 mp4 files stored on my local drive to lag and A/V desync with mplayer message: **** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****

I tried cache values from 1000 to 80000, and they lag in any case. But without the option "cache" these videos play well. Now I commented "cache" in config.

Code:
[default]
#cache=65536
#cache-min=10
ao=alsa

Ubuntu :: Display Reduces To 1 Line?

Feb 6, 2011

I am using Ubuntu live on a i7 x64 with Zotac nvidia. Not sure if Ubuntu started the issue.

When I am using the PC, suddenly the whole display goes blank except for one horizontal line. Even when I restart, the same line will be only visible.

Then I have to wait for sometime with the PC shutdown. After which the whole display will be back. Not sure what is causing the issue.

I suspect its an issue with the graphics card. But just want to know if ubuntu is contributing to the issue in any way.

Hardware :: Ps Change Reduces CPU Temperature?

Sep 25, 2010

Over the course of this year, I've been upgrading my system. Started with a mobo/CPU/RAM/video swap, going to a quad core Phenom-II 955 with 4 Gigs of RAM and an Nvidia GT-240 video card. I then dialed up the clock on that CPU, taking it to 3.415 GHz from its nominal 3.2 GHz, and I overclocked the RAM to 1704 MHz from the system default of 1333 MHz. Then I stuffed another hard drive into the box (the sixth HD in the box). Then I shove another 4 Gigs of RAM into the system, for a total of 8 Gigs.

Over this entire exercise, I have not changed the power supply. It was a Coolermaster 500 Watt supply that has served me well and faithfully. I did a careful power budget of this system and concluded that it was sucking somewhere between 420 and 450 watts at full load. Hence, my PS was very marginal. Allowing for derating as the PS aged, I figured I was really close to the edge.

However, I was having no symptoms, so I went with it. My system sits in a room where the temperature is usually around 28 C, and it would idle with a CPU temperature of 40C. Well, I started having some symptoms that were consistent with inadequate power within the last few days. I wasn't terribly surprised at that, so I didn't complain about having to go and buy a new PS. I purchased a Coolermaster GX 750 Watt supply. This is a high efficiency unit.

Since installing it a couple of hours ago, my system is idling with a CPU temperature of 36C. Mobo temp appears unchanged. No changes to BIOS, overclocking is unchanged, and nothing in the system is different except the PS. The case is an Antec P182, which puts the power supply in the bottom of the case inside its own duct. So, the motherboard and CPU don't see any heat from the PS; all of that is exhausted along its own path.

It is too soon yet for me to know if my symptoms that caused me to change the PS are gone, but the temperature change is quite striking. I have no explanation for it. Does anyone else? Temperature is being reported using the sensors command. Mandriva 2010.1 system. Edit: I am also noticing 1 to 3 degree C drops in hard drive temps, while ambient temperature in this room is constant. There are 6 drives in this box, and their temp history has been pretty constant...

Ubuntu :: Ondemand Vs Performance - Increases The Clock Speed To Performance When The CPU Is Under Load

Jul 31, 2010

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

Networking :: Ethtool Not Properly Enabling WOL?

Nov 25, 2008

I'm having problems enabling Wake-on-LAN using ethtool.I'm using ethtool 5.1 on Fedora 8. Ethtool reports that the card supports u,m,b,g for WOL modes. I can run "ethtool -s eth0 wol g", which completes without errors. If I run ethtool again, the Wake-on setting is changed to whatever I just set it to. However, when I actually shutdown the machine, the lights on the NIC don't stay on as they normally should, and any attempts to wake the machine have no effect. The machine dual-boot Windows XP, and I have enabled WOL in the driver there. When I shutdown the machine from XP, everything works just fine. The NIC lights remain on and the machine wakes up properly. So...I think I have my BIOS configured properly, and my WOL utility is working properly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Locks Up When Enabling Wireless?

Apr 19, 2011

I've been having an issue for the last day or so. I have an HP Pavilion dv8000 running 10.10. Whenever I boot with the Wireless activated, it will lock about 3-4 seconds into the log-in screen (I'm guessing when it connects to my router). If I have the wireless deactivated (like now), I am able to use the ethernet connection, or (like now) use my phone to tether internet. But, as soon as I click the wireless to active, locks up. The wireless activity light flashes, but that's all.

I'm pretty good about updating whenever I use my laptop, but I think something in the most recent update may have broken my wireless connection.

Fedora Networking :: Enabling Wifi On An Acer 1360

Dec 24, 2009

trying to bring back to useful ife an old laptop: an Acer 1360.

I have installed kmod-ndiswrapper to assist me. The laptop has one of these:

Quote:

00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Linksys, A Division of Cisco Systems [AirConn] INPROCOMM IPN 2220 Wireless LAN Adapter (rev 01)

I have grabbed the Windows drivers for this card and installed:

Quote:

[graham@old-acer ~]$ ndiswrapper -l
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release.
neti2220 : driver installed
device (17FE:2220) present

lsmod shows:

Quote:

ndiswrapper 158060 0

Looking good to me - (is that conf file required an issue?) but Network Manager doesn't recognise that I have any wlan running at all. The Wifi button on the laptop is on but 'red' and not 'green' for up and running.

Um. Next steps? I suppose I could buy a compatible wifi card and slap it in?

CentOS 5 Networking :: DNS Is SLOW After Enabling/disabling NetworkManager?

Mar 30, 2010

I ran into this today accidentally turned on networkmanager and it took it upon itself to rewrite some things and proceeded to make any DNS lookups on my server Especially those reverse DNS for SSH and SFTP take so long they would just time out instead of completing.. Disabling networkmanager did not undo the damage either. Short fix, Erase your resolv.conf file and add 2 lines to it as so, your nameservers!

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
save, and run the following commands
service network restart
service httpd restart
service sshd restart

Mine had a search line added by networkmanager and some others, when i reverted it back to as above, almost instantly after restarting the services the systems lookups were once again, lightning fast. DNS lookups were taking upwards of 20 seconds for unknown reasons after this happenned

Ubuntu Networking :: Enabling Wifi In Laptop For Other Devices When Connected To Wired Network

Jul 14, 2010

This may be more suited for the networking forums, but I figured Community Cafe would be well rounded enough for someone to tell me if this is even possible (with minimal configuration that is). There are a few places I travel where I only have a wired connection to the Internet (no wifi), but when this happens is there a simple way to create an adhoc network so wireless devices can route through my computer and to the network? Reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting an iPad or iPod Touch which have wireless connections, but in the cases where my laptop is using a wired ethernet connection and the wireless card isn't used, I'd like to create an adhoc wireless network that'll let such wireless devices work.

Software :: Xsane Reduces Size Of Image Of Scanned Page - How To Get Back To Full Size?

Nov 12, 2010

In a nutshell the resulting image, when printed, is smaller than the original document. In writing my dissertation for this post I determined that the cause of the issue is that xsane believes I am scanning an 8.5 x 14 inch document when I am in fact scanning an 8.5 x 11 letter. So the question is... can I change the size to 8.5 x 11? and if so, how? I have not found anything in the xsane Preferences.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Performance On Virtual Box

Aug 1, 2011

I have a WinXP virtual box and have setup a Samba server to have it use directly a couple of directories on the Linux side. The Samba performance is definitely better than the built-in shared folders of the virtualbox, but there is nothing to write home about either: transfer seem to top at around 3Mbyte/sec.

The machine is a laptop (Core i5 CPU (M520@2.40GHz) and a 7200RPM HDD) running Kubuntu 10.04.The Samba share uses a dedicated "host-only" network adapter. There is an iptable-based firewall to which i added the required 4 statements to let the Netbios traffic go through (without them nothing works...)So, given the hardware, are the 3MB/s a decent figure? And if not, what should I aceeive, and where can I look improve on the current numbers?
