Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Performance On Virtual Box

Aug 1, 2011

I have a WinXP virtual box and have setup a Samba server to have it use directly a couple of directories on the Linux side. The Samba performance is definitely better than the built-in shared folders of the virtualbox, but there is nothing to write home about either: transfer seem to top at around 3Mbyte/sec.

The machine is a laptop (Core i5 CPU (M520@2.40GHz) and a 7200RPM HDD) running Kubuntu 10.04.The Samba share uses a dedicated "host-only" network adapter. There is an iptable-based firewall to which i added the required 4 statements to let the Netbios traffic go through (without them nothing works...)So, given the hardware, are the 3MB/s a decent figure? And if not, what should I aceeive, and where can I look improve on the current numbers?

Networking :: Virtual Interfaces For Bridge For Performance Testing

May 19, 2011

Now doing some research about performance of Linux switch. I'll start with basic structure of my system: PC1 is connected to PC2 - both have 1 NIC so not much to add.PC2 eth0 is divided in VLAN`s as far as maximum of 4094. Every VLAN has it's own switch (bridge). On PC1 when I run a test I just make VLAN/configure IP address and stream data to IP that's configured for that bridge on PC2.But now I want to add one more interface to each bridge, so I could stream from PC1 through bridge to Virtual interface (just an endpoint out of bridge). I could possibly add one more computer, physical interface to PC1 and make it work, but is there any way to make this work with virtual interfaces, like tun or something? Making just a simple tun interface and adding it to bridge, as you understand, doesn't do the trick, I need some kind of other endpoint that /virtually/ connects to tun interface. Maybe someone has made some kind of script or something? Using Iperf for my tests.

Ubuntu Servers :: Next Steps In Improving SAMBA Performance?

Jul 13, 2011

I built my own file server based on the Intel Atom 525 and Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64):http:[url]....It has 2 2TB Western Digital Green drives connected via SATA.Internal file transfers (disk-to-disk) using Nautilus zip along at 80 Mb/sec. Over SAMBA, however, I'm getting 35 Mb/sec. Other than creating the shares, I haven't modified smb.conf.have a gigabit network. I've run atop on the receiving computer and it isn't being taxed. At 35 Mb/sec the file server is also not being taxed.

Should I be focusing on testing the onboard NIC (RealTek 8111E) in the file server or looking at SAMBA?

Server :: How To Optimize Samba Performance

Jan 4, 2011

I have installed a linux server, centos gui server with Raid1, his role will be only a file server. I installed samba and configured it. The file system is EXT3. the server got 4 gigs of memory. There is a program in windows that writes files to the share.I searched and i found that there is some commands that you add and they boost the performance.

I got complains that the writes are not fast enough. Before me another IT guy configured the file server and it was faster, what he told my customer that he changed some command of cache but i dont know exactly what he did. I have been asked to find how to boost the performance. Please give me more commands to try to boost the performance of Samba or tell me if i need to change anything..

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Filesystem Type Impacts Performance?

Jun 4, 2010

I installed a month or so ago a Samba File Server along with Active Directory integration in my company. I choose to install on my newly created raid array, all in ext3 filesystem. The purpose of this fileserver is to have lots of files from the different departments on the company (all windows workstations except mine). Everyone has a private folder and a department folder, along with the common folder for all employees.did I made a mistake formating all to ext3? would I get a significant increase in performance if I resize the current ubuntu partiton and created a new NTFS new one and move the files to it?

Networking :: Outgoing Local Trafic Over Virtual Interface Has Not Virtual Ip Address

Aug 25, 2009

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface. Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.

My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem. So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem

Ubuntu :: Ondemand Vs Performance - Increases The Clock Speed To Performance When The CPU Is Under Load

Jul 31, 2010

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

General :: Httpd Virtual Host Set To Mount To Samba Share Folder?

Dec 23, 2010

The scenario like this. I'm working on Ubuntu 10.10. I've enable samba sharing with full guest access enable. In my office I had another server (CentOS 5.5) installed just for me and I've created a Apache VirtualHost which root document pointed to share folder on my comp

This is my fstab setting
//my ubuntu computer name/sharing/www /media/www cifs context=system_ubject_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0,username=username,password=******,iocharset=utf8,fi le_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

After label the mount folder as httpd_sys_content_t the Apache web server working in correct way (duno much but at least it can index files and excute some php code so) then the troll come in : if some file was created by my ubuntu (personal comp) then the file would be listed in Apache virtualhost correctly.

But if I'm ssh to CentOS server goto /media/www which was mounted to my unbuntu computer. Then type command like $mkdir something Suprising that folder ./something could not be accessed by Apache anymore except I remount by umount and mount it again or "setenforce 0" What is wrong with my system can anyone point me out of this headache

Fedora Networking :: Unknown Samba Password - Use Samba For File Sharing Like On A Windows Home Network

Jul 17, 2010

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.

My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Ubuntu Networking :: WIFI Performance Degraded After Upgrade To 10.10

Jan 12, 2011

I would like to re-raise this topic that I have seen on other discussion boards but seems to be going no where.I have been using Ubuntu for many years now having switched from other distributions. All my machines ran some version of Ubuntu, until just recently. I upgraded my personal HP TX2500 from 9.04 to 10.04. No problems. After 10.10 had been out for a while I upgraded again. The wireless would drop when busy/(signal slightly weakened) etc. It would not function again unless the wifi module was reloaded.

Then I installed 10.10 on my HP NC6400 the same thing occured. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 instead. It seemed no better. After some Googling, it seemed I was not alone. I tried all the suggestions I could find and none of them worked. One suggestion was to install Fedora 14. This works perfectly on the nc6400. The HP TX2500 has been reinstalled back with 10.04 where the wireless seems ok and I assume I am stuck there for a while.

Now my question is why would the networking behave this way for Ubuntu 10.10 (10.04 as well on the NC6400) but wireless on Fedora 14 is perfect (I mean really good! Better than either Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 on any of my laptops) on the NC6400. I am hoping that we can find a way to fix this, otherwise I will likely have to drop Ubuntu completely because I do not have an upgrade path for laptops. There must be many other users in the same position who are not discussing it and just rebooting each time this occurs. This must give a negative perception of otherwise great software.

Networking :: Underwhelming The Routing/VLAN/bonding Performance?

Mar 10, 2011

Upgraded a school network from FastEthernet to GigabitEthernet. Broke the network up into VLANs. Discovered that the router (Cisco 2821) could only route between the VLANs at around 400Mb/s. Tested out some layer three switches. They work very nicely, but are more than we need. So I started putting some spare equipment we had together as a Linux router.

Result: Underwhelmed. The machine has two Intel GigE interfaces. With the machine configured to route between two test VLANs I get about 855Mb/s with a single interface (all VLANs trunked over the single interface). That's about what I'd expect. Maybe a little low. With the two interfaces bonded, I get about the same.

For testing, I set up eight Windows machines, four on each VLAN. The Linux router is the only machine that can route between the two VLANs. I used Iperf to generate traffic and measure throughput between pairs of machines. Two machines on the same VLAN get about 300Mb/s between themselves. With the four machines organized into cross-VLAN pairs, I get about 855Mb/s total throughput on a single interface and very slightly more with two interfaces bonded.

The Linux router has an Intel Xeon E5506 CPU running at 2.13GHz and these are Intel GigE interfaces (built-in). I would expect to get a large boost by adding the second interface. I've confirmed that bonding is working (by pulling either of the cables and watching everything continue to function).

CentOS 5 Networking :: Poor Network Performance On New Server?

Jan 29, 2009

ok, we had to move one of our databases due to failing hardware. This box is newer than the old but it's just dog slow. 1st I thought it was mysql but now I am realizing it's the network. As a test, I tried copying a remote file to that box and the old server (located at the same co-lo, same provider), same switch, etc.Here are the results;

Old server:
access_log.1 100% 4192KB 1.4MB/s 00:03

New Server:
access_log.1 100% 4192KB 72.3KB/s 00:58

So now I see why people were complaining about webpage load times, etc. I can't figure out why the network latency. I looked around a bit, see below for some things, I thought mtu, nic speed, etc.

mii-tool shows;
eth0: 100 Mbit, full duplex, link ok
eth1: 100 Mbit, full duplex, link ok[code].....

Are there other things I can type to test or provide more feedback somehow to get more information.

Networking :: Feasible / Desirable To Setup A Network Of Virtual Machines To Use As An Environment To Learn Networking?

Nov 18, 2010

I've been learning linux for a while now with half an eye on making a career out of it in future. One sizeable gap in my knowledge at the moment is networking. Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.

Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.
