I was wondering if there is a way to specify a newer, different kernel to be installed during the initial linux installation process. i.e. kernel version x.y.y is included in the installation, but I want the system to have kernel version x.y.z to be installed instead. I have the rpm for the new kernel, either in a usb stick or a cd rom. is there any way that I can go about it?

I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)

Usually when this happens there is an additional item in the grub menu. The last two times this has happened I didn't get an additional menu item. What is the latest stable version? I am currently running:

My question is, if I use the upgrade-manager -d feature will it be like an actual beta 2 when it gets released and later on will it be the same as the full final version. Anyway im trying to install kernel headers and devel from the fedora installation disk but i dont know how to get to the cdrom thru terminal as i cant copy the RPMs to desktop by drag n drop or using software installer.
I dont have an internet connection to the pc so i cant use yum (which would make things so much easier) so can anyone tell me how how to install these packages thru terminal?
I am trying to install Fedora 11 from the full DVD iso on a system using an Intel D945GNT motherboard with a dual-core 3.2GHz Pentium D installed. The installation hangs quite quickly and produces the error "Kernel panic - not syncing"... The previous line is something along the lines of "EIP: [something] intel_i915_configure() [something else]". I have tried many different kernel boot options, such as acpi=off, nolapic, nommconf, and the like, but to no avail. It seems as though this has something to do with a memory mapping conflict due to the allocation of video memory for the on-board graphics chip, but I'm not at all certain about that.

Looks to me like the installation media for i386 doesn't have an i386 kernel! I'm trying to install to an i586 CPU.
I've upgraded the generic kernel of my Xubuntu Karmic AMD64 persistent USB installation with the ubuntustudio realtime kernel (2.6.31.9.10). The thing is that the generic kernel is still loading as default and I don't have the option on the boot menu to choose the new one. I don't know how to edit this Grub2 version (grub-pc 1.97 beta 4).I haven't found a GUI package for this either.

there is an issue with the way the Linux Kernel addresses memory by default and the graphic drivers for my Asus G1Sn. I have a patch that I had compiled against a custom kernel for 2.6.27.xx how ever it does not work with the latest kernel in Fedora 11. It is beyond me to rewrite the patch to work with a different kernel.
