Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting 9.10 And Win7?

Apr 18, 2010

Until very recently I was running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) installed on a 20 GB hard disk and Windows XP (SP3) installed on RAID 1 array of 2 x 250 GB disks, very happily along side each other and using GRUB as the bootloader installed on the smaller 20 GB drive.

I have decided to upgrade to Windows 7, and was struggling with the installation failing with the seemingly quite common "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate and existing partition" error. Google seaching suggested unplugging my Ubuntu drive and then installing Win 7. This worked fine with the Ubuntu drive unplugged, however with the 20 GB plugged back in I can boot to GRUB, but it still has XP in the menu, and no option for Win 7.

I think I could get around the issue by re-installing Ubuntu, which would place GRUB on the MBR which is now on the 250 GB RAID 1 array, but I would rather have the system as it was before with GRUB and Ubuntu on the 20 GB drive.

I know I need to edit GRUB to remove the XP entry from the menu, but I have no idea how I would get Win 7 into GRUB, and what to do about the MBR which Win 7 put onto the RAID 1 array.

Ubuntu :: Dual Booting 11.04 And Win7 Goes Wrong

Jul 14, 2011

Got a HP dv6-3019wm laptop yesterday and my attempt to dual boot has gone up in flames. I first followed the tutorial [URL]

I might have gone wrong by accidentally making the hard disk 'dynamic' after shrinking the windows partition. Upon booting the computer up after the 11.04 installation, Win7 gave me a 0xc0000225 error. The built in hard drive recovery didn't work and neither have multiple win7 64b recovery disks I have downloaded. A gparted live cd wouldn't boot. On attempting to reinstall 11.04 (so I can just get rid of win7), the installation freezes when it tries to recognize the state of my hard drive.

I've basically turned to dban, but that won't even work. The latest version gives me an error of "no configuration file found" and 1.0.7 give me "non-fatal error", even when I attempt to auto-nuke.

Am I out a hard drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting Windows (Vista Or Win7) 9.10 From Same SATA Drive?

Mar 2, 2010

I can dual-boot on my PC by using my SATA drive for Windows & a second IDE (PATA) one for Ubuntu. However when I try to install both OS's on the Primary SATA drive side by side only one is detected (and I have no option to boot the other).

I have a friend with the same problem who is trying to boot Win7 and Ubuntu off the same SATA drive and the same issue occurs on his (He doesn't have the second drive as an option as I do).

Does anyone know a way to get side by side installation to work on one (SATA) drive? Failing this is it possible to boot Ubuntu off and External hard drive and still be able to dual boot Windows & Ubuntu?

Slackware :: Lilo Not Booting Slackware Correctly - Errors Inside?

Mar 1, 2010

I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;

0800 78150744 sda driver:sd
0801 47428608 sda1 <-- this is my Windows partition
0802 30719552 sda2 <-- this is my Linux partition
0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr
0b01 1048575 sr1 driver:sr

Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:

#mkdir /slacktemp
#mount /dev/device /slacktemp
#chroot /slacktemp
#cd /slacktemp/etc <-- for me it told me that doesn't exist
#vi lilo.conf <-- couldn't do nothing and was frozen
#lilo -v -t -b /dev/device
#lilo -v -b /dev/device

The above solution did not work for me. Can anyone shed a light on a Linux rookie?

Some of you have recommended Alien BOB's guide but I have read the first parts of it. Is it really for people with Windows OS? It's a bunch of Linux CLI code and programs.. ?

Slackware :: 13.37 UNC With SaMBa Hostaname From Win7 Box Not Resolving Via Broadcast

Jul 7, 2011

I have installed Slackware on MANY boxes over the years and SaMBa has always resolved hostnames via UNC (\slacksharename) on a local net, but I am now at a loss after trying this at home. A UNC to the share via IP (\192.168.1.123sharename) does work fine, but this is the 1st Slackware distro I have ever had problems with resolving a broadcasted UNC. Subnet is 255.255.255.0 w/ both machines plugged into a switch and they are "linked" fine and other versions of Slack worked fine... This is for a one-trick pony, SaMBa share only, but she is not doing tricks! My other Slack box 13.1.0 resolves a Windows 7 \hostnameshare request UNC fine on the same net. smb.conf (This is not the share I am going to use, but if once this works I can get a /dev/md mounted and shared with minor changes):

General :: Win7 User Installing Dual Boot Slackware 13?

May 29, 2010

I'm a pretty experienced Windows user, and have coded in x86 and win32 API for a while, so I know the system reasonably well. I've used windows since the days of Win95, and prior to that I had an Amiga - so I'm pretty rusty in unix-like operating systems. I have little C coding knowledge beyond reading it, though I can understand what the programmer is doing from reading the source. My only experience with installing linux was on a 486 laptop that failed spectacularly when the CDROM couldn't be detected and used, so I'm necessarily a little wary of doing this, but I've become quite exasperated with Windows lately.

I have decided to make my life interesting (if not easier at first) by dual-booting Linux with Win7. My current machine is a dual-core intel laptop with 2GB of RAM and an ATI X1250 mobile GPU, with a 120GB HDD. I have two partitions currently on this machine - both 60GB-ish. The main C: drive is Win7. I'm aware of the hidden partition that Windows installs. I have an external 1TB USB drive for my applications and data, so space shouldn't be a problem. There is no floppy drive (unsurprisingly) and I can boot from the internal DVD drive.

I have chosen the Slackware 13 distro because it seems to be well respected as a learning tool for unix-like operating systems. My main aim here is not to abandon Windows at first, but to learn a new OS. I'm aware that Slack may not be the most user-friendly distro, but will give me knowledge that I might not gain under other distros. If I'm making a mistake here, then let me know! I have plenty of free time to devote to this little project, and I'm not afraid to learn. I am however afraid to destroy my Win7 fall-back. If all else fails, I need to be able to go back to a working OS to jump on the net to find the answer to what went wrong.

So my question, as per the subject title, is: What do I need to know before I do this? I have no idea what I'm doing with regard disk partitioning beyond Partition Magic - which I don't actually possess anymore. I can use the Windows disk management app. I have no idea how to manage a boot sector. So are there any gotchas that I need to bear in mind? I've already read this thread: [URL]. Which I must admit looks very complicated! I have a fair bit of time before my Slackware 13 DVD-ISO image downloads (20KB/Sec) so have some time to gather information.

Slackware :: VirtualBox Guest On Win7 Host - Folder Sharing?

Jul 13, 2010

I have a Win7 laptop with the latest version of VirtualBox installed. It's a dual core proc with ram to spare. So, I installed Slack64-13.1 and it rocks! I'm really impressed that Slack is running at what appears to be native speed, but in virtual machine. Hardware response is normal, WIFI and LAN are both working great for my normal tasks. So, I downloaded a few much needed patches, and new ISO image for one of my old desktop PCs. Now, my problem is I can't connect my USB cdwriter to my virtual slackware or share folders in the Win7 install with the virtual slackware. I read a few of tutorials on the Oracle VBox website, and several of the ones here on LQ, and none of them seem to solve my problems.

Networking :: After Upgrading From Win7-32 To WIN7-64 Can't Mount Cifs Shares

Jul 21, 2010

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.

First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:

I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.

If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.

From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

Code:

I try this manually now:

Code:

Next I try to mount it:

Code:

I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.

Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.

What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

Slackware :: Booting Current And 64-13.1 From DVD?

Oct 18, 2010

I saw that /isolinux / kernel was updated in current. So I thought time to give it a try.
My installition and computer stops after

Parsing Elf OK
Booting Kernel

This seems to happen because the kernel or initrd.img is being overwritten. I solved this in 13.1 with PV's help by inserting the /isolinux and /kernel directory from 13.0 into the 13.1 files before running growisofs.I have again tried all the other suggestions from my previous post with 64-13.1. no success only using isolinux from 13.0 works I am running the current kernel on my main system 2.6.35.7 since the day it was put on kernels.org this was my previous thread on this problem

[URL]

would love to hear some suggestions on this as I just assumed it would be solved for 13.2 or whatever is next where to find the source for the initrd.img used in /isolinux.Possible the rest of the boot source would help. I have been trying to decode what happens on the DVD boot. Looked at arch/x86/boot/compressed/
