I goes through the process but afterwards I go to reboot it and it just keeps restarting itself over and over again. It NEVER makes ot to the windows screen. What can I do to fix this problem? I don't have the money to go to Best Buy to ghave them fix it because I'm broke.

I recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 in South Africa and I am using a Neotel telephone device that connects with EVDO. I have followed instructions to get it working by typing: sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1d09 product=0x4000.
I have also put it in /etc/init.d/rc.local to get it to load up on startup. This works and I am able to connect using the network manager. The problem is if I disconnect and then try to connect again later, it refuses to connect till I reboot and then it works, till I disconnect again.

I installed Ubuntu in my PC alongside winXP. I downloaded the ISO and mounted it using a virtual image software (PowerISO used in winXP). I installed Ubuntu using wubi in a 20GB partition. During installation it asked me how much space should I give, I gave it 11gb. Everything went fine. I rebooted but now the computer hangs during startup. I went to verbose mode to see what the error is and found out that everything is ok. The last line that apears is "Setting sensors limit [OK]" and then nothing happens. I have tried every option (safe graphic mode/ demo mode etc etc) but the computer hangs.

I am running version 10.10 on an HP envy 14.I just updated the drivers for the video cards, and after I installed them, I was prompted to login to the system. I entered my username and password, and a few seconds later the prompt said "incorrect login" and gave me the same prompt over and over again. I KNOW I'm using the right ID and password, so why isn't it working? How can I get around this?

Computer hangs and sometimes won't reboot.
When it hangs I have seen this message a few times:
o[4348] EXT3-fs error (device sda1) ext3_get_imode_loc : unable to read inode block_inode = 14720620 block = 58753255
Also when the machine boots up I get a message saying something about IOMMU should be set in BIOS, but I can not find any such setting in BIOS. I do not know if this is related to the hanging.
I thought I had a hard drive problem at first so I tried a different hard drive. Same problem.
The mother board is an ASRock N68C-S.
One other thing, where is the file located that boot up messages are written to?

After trying to deal with a very frustrating problem in Ubuntu 11.04, which caused my Eee Pc 1001PX to freeze any time I connect it to a wireless network. It worked Perfectly using my ZTE WCDMA Mobile broadband modem though. I gave up - and Formatted my netbook, Downgrading it to Ubuntu 10.10. Now the problem is the exact opposite:
The Wireless works perfectly, But the Modem Is causing the trouble.
Here is the problem:
Whenever I reboot the Computer, It doesn't recognize the modem. If I right click the networks button on the top, go to edit connections, and Delete the mobile broadband connection I had previously configured, then unplug the device (usb) and reconnect it, The computer recognizes it, allowing me to reconfigure the connection (make a new mobile broadband connection). As you can guess, repeating this after every reboot is rather irritating.
Some Technical Details:
My pc: Asus Eee Pc 1001PX
My Mobile Modem: Zte WCDMA Netstick.
When I tried to update my Kernel, the Wireless Problem from Ubuntu 11.04 was back, and I had to reformat.

I have a laptop, installed with window XP. I just installed Fedora Core, re-formatted all parition on the system, and installed default packages. The installation was successful. But after I took out the installation CD and reboot the system, chose Fedora core (the only banner), the screen just become green, and nothing else from there.
The only thing I am not 100% sure is, during the installation, my monitor was probed as unrecognized. I have tried both 'go with default' and specify one "LCD 1024x...", but either way, after the installation, system won't reboot.

I am running Fedora 12 32-bit on an Intel Core2 Duo system. I just installed some recent updated, and after starting the computer, I no longer have any network access, either to my local network or the Internet.
I'm not sure what information to provide at the moment that will be helpful in diagnosing this problem.
What do people know about how I can restore network connectivity to my computer?

I am a new to linux. I recently purchased a used dell d820. It has 2 gigabites of ram, and has centrino duo. The hard drive is 80 gigabites. I used boot and nuke to erase windows xp, in order to install linux. (I was quite unhappy with the screen, codec, and other problems I was having with windows.)
However, each time I try to install Fedora, or any other version of linux to the hard drive, the computer shuts down ENTIRELY.
Is there a way to fix this? I seems like my machine just doesn't like linux?

I have messed up my partitions really bad and grub refuses to install. Here's how it looks:
Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 14 2432 19430617+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 2433 60801 468848992+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 2433 2930 4000153+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 2931 53535 406484631 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 53536 60801 58364113+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
Initially there was only Linux (Karmic) on this hdd, on what is now sda2 to sda6, current sda2 being the boot partition. Now, I decided to install Windows XP and using GParted I created an NTFS partition at the end, sda7. But it wanted to have his loader on the first one, so (now this is probably stupid what I did) I cut 100MB from Linux root and put it as NTFS at the beginning, making it sda1, boot and letting windows install it's loader there. I figured I can just reinstall grub on it later (think I have missed some tutorials). As you can probably guess, it won't. I formatted sda1 to ext4 now. What I do is run the Live CD (9.10), use terminal, then do
Code:
sudo -i
mkdir /media/boot
mount /dev/sda1 /media/boot
grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/media/boot /dev/sda1
and it goes
Code:
grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea.
grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and its use is discouraged.
grub-setup: error: Cannot read `/grub/core.img' correctly
also, when I do update-grub it says "grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /."
I tried installing grub on sda2 and flagging it as a boot and still no-go.

I've been trying for days to get this printer to be recognized by 10.04. I've tried seemingly every possible combination of methods from "HOWTO Install Samsung Unified Printer Driver" to no avail (though I have learned a good bit during the process). So I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

I have a 9.10 fully updated install on an old P4 HP desktop that otherwise runs flawlessly. We moved it to the bedroom to use as a media center and when I plug in a Thermolake toaster with a Hitachi 750G SATA drive it is recoginized and available no problem. I can read/write no problem. It works via nfs4 no problem. The issue is if I reboot while the drive is attached it the machine refuses to reboot and hangs on the initial hardware screen not even showing a grub screen. This has always been a native ubuntu machine with no dual boot or any weird grub2 issues previously. Interestingly, I am getting the exact same issue with another HP desktop (Celeron machine) with 9.10 Server 32bit that I' using as a home server. This is obviously a bigger problem because if the server updates or requires a reboot for any reason I can't just leave the drive attached. This drive houses our movie and music collection.

I installed F11 x86 from the DVD onto one of my machines using a total of 4 partitions:
1. /boot
2. /
3. /home
4. swap
I then created an image of the first 3 partitions with fsarchiver and restored it onto a second machine (with different hardware). Grub was loaded onto the second machine as well without a problem. The new cloned install will get past grub fine but the kernel hangs. After removing 'rhgb quiet' from the boot options, I can see that the last message outputted to the console is something about the PS/2 mouse - this doesn't make sense as the mouse is working perfectly fine.
Additionally, I can still reboot using ctrl-alt-delete so the kernel/CPU must still be responsive. I have tried troubleshooting the various pieces of hardware, so I'm guessing it's something with the clone. All the cloned filesystems appear to be fully intact; the partition UUID's are all the same. I've even tried changing the UUID's both in grub and /etc/fstab to hardcoded /dev/sdaX , but this does not fix anything.
