I'm running Fedora Core 12 and XFCE on a Pentium 4 with 2 Gb of RAM. It is useable, but not fast. The video is some crumy on-board stuff in an old IBM Netvista pc. I wonder if adding a nicer nVidia based accelerator will make a noticeable different in performance.

Edit: Im also getting a low mhash rate of 1.5. Is this correct for a geforce 9400m? Im not too worried about it after I use these new cards. and is there a difference in using laptops vs a pci slot desktop video card?

It's been a bit since I've used it, but opened it up today, and it's just performing at a crawl, not to mention sucking up a goodly amount of CPU cycles (process "miro.real"). I've tried the Repo version 3.5.x as well as the PPA version 4.0.3, both are just as slow and as choppy as it can be in 11.04. Any thoughts, or anyone just want to share my misery? It loves company...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...

If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

I had it running pretty nicely on Ubuntu10.10, I started windows and later restarted and after that it wouldn't get past the Graphic cards bios. this is rather odd isn't it? I suspect it maybe dead or that my motherboard bios is stuffed but i reset that too and it still wont go.. The specs are Pentium4 Proccesor 1gb ram motherboard 661gx-m7 Nvidia GeForce FX5200 DDr128mb

I pulled out a dying AGP card to try and switch to onboard video, and I think the previous configuration is gumming up the works.I've been running this system for quite a while, as you'll be able to tell from the version numbers.Would like to avoid having to transport my Amarok databases to a new server. I make heavy use of the song ratings and whenever I try to transport the database from the old system to a fresh build I have to spend hours relearning sql commands.Any ideas how to either fix the resolutions on the ATI or (preferably) get KDE to start on the onboard graphics?

but my ubuntu 10.04 32-bit system still won't boot. Shortly after the ubuntu logo comes up, before the login, my screen goes black and there is no more video signal. What else can I do to reset the video configuration? The card only has this info on it: I could put the card back in the system, reboot, and then pre-configure the system to drop to the intel 865G on-board video, but the msi card has intermittent problems and will spontaneously re-boot several times during the first ten minutes of turning on the system.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed several different distro's over the last coupled of weeks and have finally as intended come back to 11.4. Last time I installed it my pc was fitted with an older nvidia card and I installed a newer 200 series and got it to work with X11 using the nvidia driver. This time I did the install with the new card in and things haven't gone the same way. I have finished up with the os drivers on my system, nouveau and "swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.10)". Performance wise it's way way behind the nvidia driver.
Glxgears for instance runs at under 1/2 the speed even at a lower resolution. I suppose I could still configure to suite my monitor but given that difference in performance would you? I have done what I can easily do with repositories but no signs of nvidia drivers. I can download one as I did last time but from what I have read previously the above drivers may mean that I have to recompile the kernel. A simpler solution might be to re install with my old card in. Can't say I'm too keen on either option. Some distro or the other had a driver helper and installed the nvidia one perfectly.
I have been using Debian on and off since Sarge and it's not as long as most people but since I can remember, the installer has always had some issues and I was wondering if you guys who use Debian religiously could answer these questions for me:
1. Difference between "Netinst" & "Business-card" besides the size being smaller? It seems like the Netinst installs two different kernels. One dated kernel to get the system up and running and then it downloads the latest one where I think the 'Business-card' ISO simply downloads the latest kernel and nothing more which seems preferred. Am I wrong?
2. After I install using "Netinst", why when I immediately perform an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' are there multiple packages to upgrade? I thought the whole point was to install fresh updated packages, no?
3. Why has nobody fixed the installer progress bar from hanging on 33%? As far as I have been using / installing Debian, the installer progress bar is always stuck on 33% & it still installs fine but never shows the user it's exact progress. I would think the developers would have resolved this after 4 years by now...
What are the differences if I build (./configure, make, make install) an app when log in as root vs a "regular" user other than I have to use sudo for make install? If an app is built from a non-root account, will it be available to every other user on the system?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find out what is the difference between wifi0 and ath0 (atheros wifi card) in terms of packet counters shown in proc/net/dev pseudofile. The fact is that wifi0 and ath0 packet counters are different. I've read that wifi0 refers to the physical device and ath0 refers to virtual device over wifi0, so, as far as I know, packets counters in both devices should be the same, isn't it? Another annoying question for me is that ath0 doesn't show any erroneous packets, while wifi0 does.

As you can see, when system is "fresh" booted there are no noticeable "Extra timer interrupts". As time goes, this number seems to increase. I have tried to find out what causes this behaviour without any luck. I am not even sure if this is any practical problem, as performance seems to be more or less unaffected, but any explanation to this would be nice. Anyone else ever notice this?I am running Ubuntu 9.10 Server edition on a Dell Poweredge SC1420, 64-bit version. The server is used for web and file sharing mostly, with little load. (15 min avg. about 0,10).
I want to create a video dvd to run same on my dvd player. I used Avidemux to open my desired video and saved(k) on my desktop. Options chosen at that time were:
Video --> MPEG-2 requant
Audio --> Copy
Format--> MPEG-PS(A+V)
These two files were were saved on my desktop naming "k" and "k.idx".Now , i don't know how to use "k3b" to make my video DVD.
I'm pretty sure I cooked a video card (fanless deal, prone to running hot). Anyways the computer boots fine and everything seems to be working from an ssh perspective. Is there some way I can ask the machine if the video card is broken?

Just want to double check that, since the newest post I found was a couple years old.
The video card I have now should be more than good enough for me.
All I do is watch videos and brows online.
But videos and desktop effects are both very choppy.
I realize that if I take the time, I can probably get my card to work well, but I just don't have the time.
Looking for a new card between $100-$150 that will work perfect right out of the box.
This would be the one thing that has always held me back from using Ubuntu as my main OS on my desktop. Now with Lucid Lynx in the picture I would really like to try again and get some answers this time around.
I have 2 GPUs in my system, a HD4870 and a HD4350. The HD4870 has a Benq 24" and a Dell 17" which are working fine in a multi-display desktop setting (No Xinerama) configured via CCC.
On the HD4350 I have a single Samsung 17" which in CCC is listed as '[Unknown Display] Unknown adapter' and cannot be used. How can I get that working properly so I can configure it as an additional screen in this setup?
Also on a side note, I have a small problem with CCC. When I installed catalyst and drivers I configured my screen resolution and multi-display desktop, but every time I reboot my resolution for both screens is set to 1280x1024 and they are cloned. Why don't my settings save?
After a post on the wine forums came to the discovery that my ATI radeon 4850 graphics card is causing much trouble in my ubuntu machine because of the lack of support. And because of that I cannot play my favorite games through wine. So now I'm saving some money to buy a new graphic card. A nvidia this time.
Now I don't know all that much about graphic cards, but I am looking for a card that works well on ubuntu that equals the performance of my old 4850 and fits my P5Q pro motherboard.
I myself don't know much about good graphic cards so if I go off to buy something without good advice I probably end up with something that does not work or fit or something like that.
Just installed 10.10 and I am very impressed.
I am not having a big problem at all but my built in video system is clearly behaving like it does not have the right driver.
Are there any video cards out there that are directly well-supported by linux? i.e. genuine linux drivers that allow the card to function at full capacity or close?
We at church are going to build a new computer to use with Datasoul, therefore I need to use 3 monitors.I've been searching about it and it seems very hard to configure Ubuntu to use 3 monitors. I know in Windows it is very easy to configure, but our budget is very small and we cannot afford to purchase a Windows license, so I need to know which video cards to purchase in order to be easier to configure; ATI or NVidia?
