Hardware :: Wifi NIC Edimax EW-7711In Compatibility - Aircrack-ng
Feb 23, 2011
I am planning to buy wifi NIC, and I would like to have it very compatible with Linux systems and also aircrack-ng apps.
Seemingly best choice for me is Edimax EW-7711In, which should have Ralink RT3062 chipset (source - WikiDevi.com), which has official drivers for Linux (source - Ralinktech.com). Also, Edimax website provides drivers for Linux (name of file contains RT3062, so I consider chipset verified).
My question is, does anybody have this card? Can you confirm it's functionality under Linux? Are you satisfied with your choice? Anyone with same chipset?
Note: Not meant to be advertisement. I haven't ever bought any card from them, neither bought any PCI wifi NIC.

i had an old Dell collecting dust and i've wanted to dive into Linux so i bought a wireless card for it. It's an Edimax EW-7128G, the reason i bought it is because there were multiple positive reviews on how well it works in linux. Ok, so i don't know linux at all. I installed Ubuntu to learn. I installed the card and as far i can see it's not working. It came with a disc with linux drivers yet i don't know how to go about using them.

which chipsets are on the PCi and PCie cards, EW7722in and EW-7612PIn, and whether they can be made to run on a linux system. My system is recent (Linux home 2.6.37.2-0.6-default kernel) Do they have the same chipset as EW-7711In, which I notice has explicit linux support? Now this was on the 3/03/2011, and I had given up getting any kind of useful support, but I got a reply today. I hope they wont mind if I quote them:

Finally took the plunge and upgraded my ubuntu studio to karmic from jaunty. I seem to be experiencing a problem many have, being that my wifi card (edimax) which worked on my previous distro is now not working at all. I've done a lot of research and found the problem seems to mainly be with broadcom cards, and have tried a number of things relating to those that have worked for others, with no luck.
My problem seems to be not that the drivers wont activate or anything like that, my problem is that under hardware drivers nothing appears at all. I have no drivers present, where most people are talking of 3. i have not found anyone else with this problem. My problem is compounded in addition by not being about to use a wire connection at all.

I have just installed an Edimax EW-7612PIn PCI-E Wifi card which has an RTL8192SE chipset. This chipset is not supported under current F15 kernels so I have installed the driver and firmware from source and have that working fine. The driver can see the card and I can issue 'iwconfig' commands successfully enough to see my Wifi network.
The problem I have is that I don't understand the relationship between iwconfig and wpa_supplicatant and as I'm running a headless F15 server I cannot use the NetworkManager GUI to help me. I should also note that the Wifi network is using WPA2-Personal encryption.
This is what I have done:
Configured /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 with what I think are reasonable values (based on google searches), including the ESSID, TYPE as Wireless, etc.
Configured /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, including using the key value returned from wpa_passphrase.
Arranged for wpa_supplicant to run from boot, using chkconfig.
However when I run 'ifconfig wlan0 up' I get the error message 'link is not ready' and indeed looking at the output from 'iwconfig wlan0' there are no configured values. I also understand that some values are configured by iwconfig and others by wpa_supplicant, however it's not clear what.
How do I permanently set iwconfig values?
How do I configure wpa_supplicant?

After purchasing few wifi-usb-dongles for my jaunty and lost many hours, i had no success in bringing them to operate as master or ad-hoc.The devices were Belkin, Level1, and a TP-Link 620 Though the Belkin could work as ad-hoc, but very often disconnects due to buffers issue (though I couldn't build the zd1211b driver for jaunty and it seems that no one can really help with that).
Now I would like to consult with you ahead regarding new potential devices, whether you know it operates as master mode or ad-hoc mode under jaunty (9.04)?
My concerns are regarding:
1. Edimax EW-7318UG
2. Edimax EW-7318USg
3. Edimax EW-7711UMN
4. Edimax EW-7711UTN
5. Edimax EW-7311USN
6. Edimax EW-7717 nMax
7. Edimax EW-7718 nMax

I already have a wifi card- the netgear wg311v3. that had almost NO linux compatibility, so I won't make the mistake of buying any old wifi card again. What I want to know is, what's a good wifi card for Linux. Here are some requirements I have for it:
Preferably 802.11n support, but I could settle for "G" Out of the box support. As in, I don't have to use Ndiswrapper. Just pop it in, and let ubuntu do the rest I would prefer a USB based dongle, but PCI would be good too. I don't have any brand preferece.

Is Debian 6 going to support my WIFI card? Stable didn't support it. It says on the box of the edimax box that it supports Debian? Ever other OS supports it out of the box? That's the only reason I don't use Debian. Model EW-7128G [URL]

I'm basically wondering if anyone knows where I can find a good dictionary to use with Aircrack-ng or Backtrack 4 with Aircrack or any other program like Aircrack. I am pretty fluent in the Aircrack command line, but cannot seem to find a true dictionary. I would like to not use word lists that don't use all characters, but if anyone has any ideas on creating a word list that actually works I'd love to learn. Also I have heard that some dictionaries are built into Backtrack 4, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to find those and use them.

i downloaded a souce tarball for aircrack-ng from linux, when i extract it and move the terminal to its directory and run make and make install it gives me errors like the following
Code:
>make
make -C src all
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/baronobeefdip/aircrack-ng-1.1/src'
make -C osdep

as you can see by the little icon next to my penguin i am using fedora (goddard) but i want to know how to install this in several other distros other than fedora because tarballs are universal with linux distros and i wanna know how to install it without using the internet (just want to know how to install it from tarball)

I have just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 my Dell Inspiron 5100 with LAN adapter Edimax Ew-7711utn. It was working fine under 11.2, without using Network Manager. The old RT2870 driver was loaded and wpa_supplicant started at boot time. But it does not connect any more automatically with 11.3. The nl80211 almost universal driver seems to be missing, wpa_supplicant is not launched during the boot process, and no connection to the AP is therefore made. I have tried quickly NetworkManager but it is of no help in this case. There is still a long way to go to make it a reliable clever tool. So, back to the ifup method, I can only connect manually with this small script :
#!/bin/sh
echo "Starting mywifi "
/usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext -B
sleep 2
/sbin/dhclient wlan0
echo ""
route add -net default gw 192.168.0.1
sleep 3
iwconfig
exit 0
It works, but I am not happy at all to have to run this bad script, and would like to understand the origin of this regression, and why is nl80211 not found.

I am (was) trying to setup my Edimax EW-7711lN PCI WiFi card. My original post is here, misplaced because my initial issue was the absence of development tools & libs. That was solved but following the tutorial on this site. I know it says Ubuntu, but the method worked for me also on Mandriva and Fedora so I was thinking it would help in openSuse as well.
However, in openSuse I have no networking devices when I look in the list (not even a loopback interface or my onboard Realtek LAN). Could someone maybe help me in doing a proper installation (maybe help me with a change to that tutorial to make it work on openSuse?).

I'm going round in circles with this as I'm just not very good at using the command line in Ubuntu. I've bought an Edimax EW-7811Un nano USB wifi adapter, and I'm really cheesed off at the moment because I can't get it to work on my laptop. I've got Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I really want this tiny dongle to work with my computer. Ubuntu is much fats than Windows, and I use it all the time, but my current wifi donlge is an old big monstrosity!

The issue is that after a while the lan side doesn't work any more (I don't know whether the wan side still works, but I assume it doesn't)
First we had BR6214K for which the transformator turned out to be broken (at least after a few years it gave 7 instead of 12 volt), only have it's replacement die shortly after. But the issue since the beginning was the network disconnecting every two to three days. Restarting the router solved the problem almost every time.
Now we have the same issue with a brand new BR6226n. This time the disconnection occurs almost every day. Restarting the router has so far worked every time.
Is this more likely to be a router or a computer issue (maybe a broken network card in one of the computers)?

I'm having an issue with aircrack-ng, when I use an aireplay-ng I don't get any ACKs from my network.
I'm using a RNX-EASYN1 with a rt3070 chipset on ubuntu 9.10
That's my command:
HTML Code:
And that's what comes up after:
HTML Code:
This one is for my network, but I tried it for some other networks just to check if there's something wrong with my network. But I didn't get any ACKs anyway.
I'm not very familiar with aircrack-ng, because I just started to play with it, please if there's somebody who's good with using an aircrack-ng.

I've just bought a GEETEK Hercules USB Wlan adapter, which has the Ralink rt3072 chipset. The Connection manager can find wireless APs, but it won't connect to any of those. Also, aircrack-ng does not find any APs while scanning. After some tinkering and a lot of restarting, I can now connect t wireless networks, although slowly. However, I still can't use it with aircrack-ng.
