I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on Athlon Barton 2600+ 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM and ATi Radeon X800 computer at 1600x1200 resolution with 2d (no compositing like Compiz).
Looking into the trouble of slow windows resizing I ended up with the observation that for 1280x1024 it's reasonably fast while at 1024x768 it's extremely fast. But 1600x1200 is my LCD's native resolution.
At 1600x1200 my computer is quite slowly responding, resizing windows or moving columns width makes it stumbling, you can see the action clearly does not go right with mouse, it's always late. KDE 4.x is way slower than Gnome.
I've tried many graphic cards (ATi, NVidia) with all possible drivers - open and proprietary, with or without 3d compositing.
Some graphic parameters:
GL_VERSION: 1.5 Mesa 7.6
GL_VENDOR: DRI R300 Project
GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI R300 (R420 4A4A) 20090101 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL
Glxgears gives ~4000fps with windowed mode and ~400fps at 1600x1200 maximized window. What is extremely amazing for me is that windowed mode takes 100% processor usage while 1600x200 maximized window (with window decorations) takes 30% of it, don't understand it.
Windows XP seems not to take care about 1600x1200 resolution, it's really fast.
Some more important devices from lspci:
$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: nVidia Corporation nForce2 IGP2 (rev c1)
00:01.1 SMBus: nVidia Corporation nForce2 SMBus (MCP) (rev a2)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: nVidia Corporation nForce2 AGP (rev c1)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R420 JJ [Radeon X800SE]

I've recently started learning linux OS, and the most confusing for me is the notation in man pages or command synopsis. I was looking for some kind of guide describing it, but couldn't find any. Thing get even worse when there is no standard notation and it looks different from one command to another. In other words, I just want to understand what all these brackets '[ ]', dots like '...' pipelines '|', italic or UPPERCASE words, etc mean at all. I can't tell the difference between [DIRECTORY...] and [FILE]... What does it mean when there are three dots inside the brackets or outside of them? And so on. To conclude, all I need is a comprehensive description for the notation syntax adopted in linux world.

Here's a method:

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 on an Intel Atom mainboard (Intel D945GCLF2) with CRT that has been running Ubuntu 9.x previously.
Both, Desktop live CD / installer and alternate install CD cause the screen to go black (and the status LED blinks).
I was able to get a bit further into the boot process with nomodeset as parameter with the Live CD, unfortunately I can't pass GRUB any parameters now that I have used the alternate Install CD by pressing 'e', it just boots.
So now I have Ubuntu installed, I get a terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1 but I don't know what I need to do now or how to adjust resolution or video settings from command line.

I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

I have a Asus EEE PC 1005P which I installed a Command-line system on using the Alternate Installer CD of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Altough I think this is a general linux and grub2 question. I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600. But it isn't reported when I use vbeinfo inside grub:
grub> vbeinfo
VBE info: version: 3.0 OEM software rev: 1.0
total memory: 8128 KiB
List of compatible video modes:
Legend: P=Packed pixel, D=Direct color, mask/pos=R/G/B/reserved
0x112: 640 x 480 x 32 Direct, mask: 8/8/8/8 pos: 16/8/0/24
[Code]...
Does it mean I have the driver? how to set it to 1024 x 600 in grub2?

I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, and was just wondering if there is a problem if you load Ubuntu 9.1 and have a display that's higher than 1024x768. I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

I was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.
