Hardware :: IRiver Cover Story Ereader Not Detected
Dec 30, 2010
Running Mandriva 2010 I have just bought an iRiver Cover Story ereader and found that it is not detected when connected to a USB port. Seeing that the Cover Story is run on Linux, I was surprised to find this problem. It fails to show up in lsusb.

I recently purchased an iRiver P7 media player which I am using with Rhythmbox under Ubuntu 9.04. The transfer speed when uploading files to the player is phenomenally slow - the first 50 or so MB reported virtually instantly then the speed immediately drops to about 12-15KB/sec yes KB/sec so a 3-400MB video file takes hours to transfer to the player. This happens with the internal memory and the added memory (SD card) too, althoufg it is faster ror the SD card. No other devices have ever behaved like this on this system (and I have used 2 different Creative players, a different iRiver player and numerous memory sticks). The computer is dual booting with windows (for once that was useful) and under windows it doesn't happen, the speed is as expected so it isn't the hardware. I don't want to have to resort to damned windoze just for this. dmesg after plugging in the player shows it identifying both the internal storage and the added SD card but I don't understand the rest of it:
[code]....
This last message gets repeated lots of times, and during transfers it seems to be issued continuously and I suppose this is why the system is so slow because it is always retrying loads of times before a success.

I recently upgrade to 11.3 and I thought I should share my experience with those that are interested. Sorry it is so long. Before I start I should mention that I moved from Ubuntu to Suse for the stability. I need a productive machine and I can't spend half my live trouble shooting. 11.2 gave me this and I was very happy. So before upgrading I decided to update my 11.2 system. As it turned out this was a mistake. The reason for this was because a week or two earlier I had tried and failed to install some app that I could only find in the KDE factory repository and I still had the factory repository enabled.
After the update my system went from stable to very detrimental. I don't know if it was the factory repository, but that is what I will be blaming until told otherwise. Next I got hold of an 11.3 iso and started doing lots of backups to an external USB drive. I am generally every paranoid about backups but my experiences Ubuntu made me even more paranoid. Backups mostly consisted of /home, /etc, /var/lib/mysql
So next I started a upgrade late one evening. During the upgrade it asked if I wanted to modify my current repositories. All the current once were marked to be removed. I did not know what was the recommend best practice and Google searches did not help. So I decided to edit the ones I thought were important including all third party repositories. The main reason for this was that I was not in the mood to have to do any lengthy re-installing if the upgrade decided to remove incompatible apps because it could not find a new one. I resolved a few dependence issues, mostly because I had marked PHP 5.2 to be protected as I have not moved to 5.3 yet.
The thing I was not prepared for was the time required. The installer estimated 10 hours to complete. I assume this was because of me enabling all the repositories and instead of using what it found on the DVD it fetches everything off the net. Living in South Africa with our slow version of broadband this was not something I could wait for as I had to go to work in 5 hours time.
So I left it and went to bed. In the morning I check on things hoping by some miracle it had finished, but in stead it had stopped halfway because of a checksum issue. Then shortly their after my Internet died for some reason and I was forced to abort with a half upgraded system.
On the weekend I decided to start up the upgrade again assuming the worsted and that I would have to do a reinstall. To my shock the upgrade just started up were it left off this time with no checksum errors and a few hours later I was booting into my 11.3 system hoping for the best. At first there was problems and I thought the upgrade had not worked as well as I had hoped.
Wireless did not work. Kmail kept crashing and Kontact ran a Akonadi migration and then Kontact would not start at all. Again I went to bed thinking I would have to spend my entire Sunday fixing these problems, again I was wrong. The next day I started my machine up and kmail was working kontact was working the only remaining problem was my broadcom wireless. I don't know what changed.
So before I tell you about my broadcom wireless issue I would just like to say thank you to all the opensuse devs. Even with me trying my best to cause problems it still worked without to many hassles. When it comes to broadcom wireless. I had the following installed. b43-firmware, b43-fwcutter, broadcom-wl, broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop But it was not working and I had no idea. I then tried running /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware.
This also made no difference. There was not even a device in /dev. Then I Google'd the new boot menu options. I had no idea what the desktop option was, I was just booting off the default. After learning the difference I realized there was a very good chance that because I had broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop installed if I booted off the desktop boot menu option my wireless would work.

I picked up a Barnes and Nobles nook (ereader) for my fianc'e and have some ebooks in multiple formats HTML, RTF, PDF, TXT, DOCX, DOC and a couple random other formats. But the problem here is that it only reads PDF files. I need a way to convert these files to PDF but also to edit the PDF text. For instance there are a couple of LIT files I converted to PDF in Windows that have a header and footer that I cant seem to find out how to remove.

I'm looking for a no frills open source ereader for ebooks (maximum screen 8"). No wifi necessary nor any apps other than what is required to view a non-drm pdf or epub format (no mp3 playing required) and a usb port. Something like the Kobo or the eSlick but available in Europe would do fine. I'd appreciate hearing your recommendations.

In a previous post I mentioned I planned to buy a Canopus ADVC 55 VHS to DV capture card (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48224).
Now I have done that. And, it works like a charm using my 64-bit Debian Sid and Kdenlive! All my VHS will be saved for the future!A short HowTo: Plug in a SCART to composite adapter into the "TV out" on the VHS player. Plug in the three red/white/yellow composite RCA cables into the adapter and into Canopus ADVC 55.
Plug in a Firewire cable into the Canopus ADVC 55 and your Firewire card on your computer. Start the computer, start Kdenlive and click the connect button. Start the VHS player and click Play.
In Kdenlive and click the Record button, as fast as you can. Wait until tape is finished. Now you have a dv-file which is about 13GB per hour, so make sure you have the space on the hard drive. The dv file should then be stored as such, as the master backup. But, it is now easily converted to any other format.
I have too many home made movies to let them rot away as VHS. My previous attempt with the USB dongle only produces precompressed MPEG2 files which would have sucked. These DV files are uncompressed, take up a huge space, cannot be played as such, but! They are the raw material for any other format. If I'd like, can using Kdenlive readily make it FullHD with a few clicks.
Oh, and it works with vinyl records too!!! Then just use Audacity to edit them later. Don't buy a cheap USB dongle, buy a Canopus ADVC 55 or something similar. The quality is crisp!!!

I have "Banshee" installed and use as an MP3 ripper (& Tag editor) and also use "Easy tag" to add cover art to id3tag data. The problem I have is Banshee detects all the mp3 id3tag info including the manually added cover art (Added by Easy tag). However when the music is dragged and dropped to my Sansa Fuze Mp3 player the cover art is not displayed (although it does support it and works with windows equivalents)
PS: I am trying to use Ubuntu as main system, I would use Ogg Vorbis but I have heard it doesn't support cover art at all.

so I'm enjoying the new Banshee grid list which is really great, but with just one problem. It displays multiple cover art, so I have a really lot of picture for just one album with various artists. I'd like there to be just one, can it be done?

How can I fix the following, borderline irritating issue?
I've tried all of VLCs different Video Output Methods. It didn't use to have this behaviour either, it just began happening now. My taskbar is set to "Always Visible" as I hate "Auto Hide" and I don't want my windows to go above or below it...

I recently upgraded my laptop from Lucid to Meerkat 10.10. Everything was fine until I closed my laptop cover. In "suspend" , I can't come back. I get a black screen with a frozen cursor, and I have to reboot. Not a good situation with a laptop. Is there anything I can do? I prefer Meerkat to Lucid for my laptop except for this one area.

Banshee (Version 1.5.2) doesn't seem to support cover art for tracks that include non ascii characters in any way. All manual methods that work with ascii tracks failed (folder.jpg in album folder, copying appropriately named jpg in ~/.cache/album-art, embedding jpg in mp3 metadata). This is really quite a drawback for users who don't have an English-only music collection. Is there any workaround or bugfix that I missed or do I have to go back to Rhythmbox to have non-English cover art?

I've been searching all over google for a way to extract album artwork embedded in id3 tags.
In an ideal world I could do this recursively in my music folder and have it save the artwork as say "cover.jpg" within the album's folder.
Anyone know of a script or program that can do this in either Linux or OSX?

I've been using OpenSUSE 11.4 with GNOME for quite a while now and so far I've been a happy camper. This morning I decided to try GNOME 3 and the install went smoothly, with the only exception of rhytmbox(my music player of choice) not being available.Later I found rhythmbox for GNOME 3 in this repo: Index of /repositories/ GNOME:/ Apps/openSUSE_11.4+GNOME_STABLE_3.0.It works well but the Cover Art plugin won't load because it fails to import python-gstreamer.Should I report a bug against OpenSUSE 11.4 or maybe I am doing something wrong?

While using Rhythmbox this morning, I was greeted by a blunt and undiscriptive error message:
Code:
Plugin Error:Unable to activate plugin Cover Art.Going to the plugin page, I was supprised to find that most of the installed plugins would not load. Without any info being offered in the player, I looked on line. Many people had problems with other plugins, and most of the time it was a problem with an uninstalled python package. But I checked on this site and I found that I had all of these packages installed. (Well, the python ones at least, to check all of them would take forever.)
Code:

After finding no help there, I ran rhythmbox -d to debug:
Code:

(rhythmbox:4971): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: unable to load module as python runtime could not be initialized

I tried several distros for my machines this week and settled for PCLINUXOS 2010.10.
My machine - Intel i7 with 8GB DDR3 133Mhz RAM. The BIOS shows all the RAM properly so everything fine from hardware side, but PCLOS detects only 3 GB of RAM!
Output of cat /proc/meminfo | grep MemTotal:
MemTotal: 3046464 kB
as after a long tryouts my heart is set for PCLOS and if it cannot use my full RAM then it's over, I will have to go on distro hunt AGAIN(sykes).

I have a windows installer DVD which has been used by my friend for installation, and which even today is being recognised and mounted by windows. But when I insert this dvd in in FC 11, it is not recognised, nor is it being mounted. I have tried so many things (like manually mounting using different possible file system types etc) but of no avail. The drive is kosher - It is very graciously allowing me to use my other CDs/DVDs.
Here is one mount effort and the corresponding dmesg output:
Quote:
[root@localhost ~]# mount -t auto /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
[root@localhost ~]# dmesg | tail

I've just grabbed the debian8 netinstall and installed it on my eeePC 701. I plan on using it as a test web server or something similar. The problem is I've managed to get the wifi working, but I really wanted to get the wired ethernet connection working and for some reason I can't detect it.
Here, the last entry seems to detect the wifi card...
Code: Select allroot@eeepc:/home/leke# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 04)

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 04)

I guess I need to manually install the driver for the wired ethernet card, but how do I go about that?
