I tried several distros for my machines this week and settled for PCLINUXOS 2010.10.
My machine - Intel i7 with 8GB DDR3 133Mhz RAM. The BIOS shows all the RAM properly so everything fine from hardware side, but PCLOS detects only 3 GB of RAM!
Output of cat /proc/meminfo | grep MemTotal:
MemTotal: 3046464 kB
as after a long tryouts my heart is set for PCLOS and if it cannot use my full RAM then it's over, I will have to go on distro hunt AGAIN(sykes).
My SATA CD-ROM is not being recognized by Ubuntu. I was not able to install from CD either, I have flash drives and other ways to install, but I need CD-ROM to work.
I have a windows installer DVD which has been used by my friend for installation, and which even today is being recognised and mounted by windows. But when I insert this dvd in in FC 11, it is not recognised, nor is it being mounted. I have tried so many things (like manually mounting using different possible file system types etc) but of no avail. The drive is kosher - It is very graciously allowing me to use my other CDs/DVDs.
Here is one mount effort and the corresponding dmesg output:
Quote:
[root@localhost ~]# mount -t auto /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom mount: you must specify the filesystem type You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root [root@localhost ~]# dmesg | tail
I've just grabbed the debian8 netinstall and installed it on my eeePC 701. I plan on using it as a test web server or something similar. The problem is I've managed to get the wifi working, but I really wanted to get the wired ethernet connection working and for some reason I can't detect it.
Here, the last entry seems to detect the wifi card...
I'm trying to install fedora 15 on my new Goflex Desk 1 TB USB 3.0 external drive but the installer isn't detecting it and everythings set in my bios. Is that being worked on, just wondering?
Ive seen this question allot but not exactly like my issue, MY usb mic AK5370 is unrecognized AT ALL and lsusb wont run. I just installed 9.10 and it wasnt seen on 9.04 either.
I have used other mp3s with no problem being detected. They always popped up on the desktop after i plugged them into the usb. This time I have a Coby MP815 player and nothing happens when i plug it into usb. Is this a microsoft proprietary issue associated with this specific product? What do I need to do?
I do not have the manual for the Coby MP3 that is why I ask
I have a problem with Ubuntu and my USB printer no longer being detected. I have installed 10.04LTS (clean install) and then added kubuntu-desktop using Synaptic. My USB printer (EPSON DX4050) is now not detected when I book into GNOME or KDE session, but IS detected if I boot using a LiveCD.
I have Lucid Lynx installed and am very happy with how it is running. A minor problem is that some hardware is undetected ie my inbuilt webacm and TV card. I have run lshw and Device Manager and neither item shows up. Is there any way I can coax the system to detect them or am I out of luck?
Iam using Ubuntu(10.04) Desktop_edition in acer 5745 Laptop(64-Bit) , I got a Blaze USB to it and it is 32 bit (CrossPlatformUI-V1.0.27-SSTL-i386-ubuntu.deb).Iam not able to install tht deviceIs thr anyway that can work on 64 bit or should i buy a new device which supports my architecture
i have a problem with detecting PC in LAN. I have installed ubuntu 1(lucid lynx)10.4 to four PCs in our school. I have connected it to router. All four PCs can connect and browse internet but cannot detect each one in the local network. I have edited already the network connections. Each one has unique IP address. However, after several trial of connecting to PC within the LAN, still i failed to detect local PC.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and I'd like to upgrade to 10.10. I tried following these instructions:
[URL]
But the message notifying me of the upgrade does not appear after I install all of the 10.04 LTS updates. I've tried quit and relaunching the update manager and clicking "Check" a few times, but nothing has popped up. Is there some setting I need to have configured right somewhere?
I have three drives: 2x320 and 1x1.5TB. On one of the 320's I have Ubuntu and on the other I have Win7. The 1.5TB drive is NTFS and I can access it from within windows no problem.
The problem is that Ubuntu does not see it at all. In Gparted it does not show up in the drop down list on the top right. In Disk Utility it doesn't show up either.
I am attempting to Run Ubuntu 10.10 on a system with 128 CPU cores (64 dual core processors), but Ubuntu is only detecting 32 cores. I've looked and looked and cannot find any information on this topic; is there a core limitation in the kernel configuration that I missed? Currently I am using Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop, would I have more luck with 10.10 Server or another version?
I have Red hat Enterprise 5 , red hat 9 and a few other versions too . The issue is whenever i am trying to boot from it , it boots fine only to end up saying local cdrom not found do you want to specify your .. thing ! whereas all fedora disks are running perfectly without any problem .
I have formatted (primary/ntfs) an old HD 80G and connected it by a USB cable to my laptop w/c is multi booted. I want to use it for back-up.
The external HD is detected and mounted automatically in Debian Lenny, Mint 7, openSUSE, Mandriva and even xp. However, no detection was found in Fedora 10.
In connection with this. May I please ask for help on how to check and understand why my Fedora partition failed to detect and mount the external HD?
I have this weird problem with my usb drive (Transcend 8 gb). It had been working fine for 2-3 months. But then all of my systems, except one stopped detecting this drive. Connecting the usb to these systems has no effect - no /dev file created and nothing shows up in dmesg and lsusb.
And on the one system (out of 5) where it works properly ,lsusb has this output: Bus 002 Device 007: ID 8564:1000 // As seen here, there is no device name listed Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0020 Intel Corp. I didn't do anything special with this usb, just using it as normal (data transfer etc). And no, I don't connect my usbs to Windows systems. I have formatted it, ran fsck but nothing worked.
I install the debian on my PC, but the monitor is not detected or not adapted ( while it is for linux CD live, and windows XP). it gives the following errors :
I want to use the file xorg.conf given by CDlive ( sidux for example) and copy it in the /etc/X11 of my debian, is it enougn or I need ohter configuration ?
I'm having this weird problem and still I can't solve it.
I'm using Debian Squeeze and when I insert a blank dvd to burn it the disk is not detected. If I insert blank cd, audio cd or already burned dvd it works.
My dvd burner is Asus. Might I think the problem is related with hardware (burner) and I may try replacing it? Or I could test through software to check if hardware should work?
I'm running 2.6.32-3-686-bigmem kernel.
This is lshw output:

From all the stuff that can enter an interface, how does it know when an IP packet has been *formed*? What if it's just random garbage entering there for whatever reason? Also, can Linux do other protocols besides TCP/IP? This would be the problem, as I said above.
I have dual booted my system with fedora12 and win7. I hv a wi-fi internet connection of Airtail via router. The wi-fi gets detected in win7 bt nt in fedora12when I connect thru cable then i get connected in fedora as
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 atm and it's not detecting my USB stick.Well I think it knows it's there but I can't open it and well, not too familiar with all the terminal codes thus I could use some help in that department.I can get the USB stick to work on windows and never had a problem with it really...
I just did a fresh install of debian (amd64) on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1520). My wireless network is not being detected, but I'm pretty sure that my wireless device IS being detected. During the installation, I got a message about some firmware .ucode file not being found. It asked me to put the file on a usb stick (which I got online), and I did that. It didn't complain after that, but I got the same message again later on, but again it didn't complain when I continued the installation.
After around 30 minutes, I came back and switched back on the pc.
The primary monitor (VGA) was not detected, even after a system reboot.
More info about my pc: Debian stable 8.2, kernel 3.16.0-4-686-pae. I have an Nvidia card, but currently I am using nouveau drivers. Two monitors: VGA (primary) and DVI (secondary).
Later I could get my primary monitor to work by switching tty (ctrl+alt+f3 and typing "startx" in the console).
I guess this is related to Xorg configuration (/etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty), but I am not really sure.
I cannot install Nvidia driver. After installation I have only text mode. I tried install this and I do no know whether I choose an appropriate version. Should I install 360.45 version? I have the following output of the command nvidia-detect:
