Hardware :: Expand SATA Storage With SAS?

Jul 11, 2011

i have a small home server that i would like to add some disks to it. ideally 4 sata2 disks.

i have been reading about SAS controller that can be installed on PCI-E connection on the motherboards.

but i am not sure how these actually work.

how i can use these? i have tried searching for it. but i get loads of selling material which does not really clarify much.

how these SAS connect to sata2 disks - do i need some adapter?

Ubuntu :: "expand" The Partition Gaining Space From The Storage One?

Mar 10, 2010

I have a 300 Gb Hard drive, I used to have windows xp on it but decided to install ubuntu, so what I did (after some suggestions) was to create 3 partitions, one of 30 Gb for windows (I use Adobe software), one of 10 Gb for Ubuntu 9.10 and the rest as a common partition used for storage. Started ok, but I really got hooked with ubuntu and now my partition is full!. My question is ( and here is where I show my deep ignorance and shame): can I "expand" the ubuntu partition gaining space from the storage one? If not, how many Gb would you recommend for an Ubuntu partition? I'm using a lot of music/video/graphics production software.

Ubuntu :: SATA II / Error "ata4: Limiting SATA Link Speed To 1.5 Gbps" - Allowing The SSD To Run At SATA II Speeds?

May 1, 2011

I keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:

1. Problem with SATA controller
2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA
3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI
4. Replacing the SATA cable
5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps

- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")

Ubuntu Servers :: Mainboard And Storage System - How Both Storage Devices Will Be Supported By Debian

Mar 11, 2011

I'm interested in buying a new hardware for my company. The old server (now 10 years old) should be replaced with a new one. Till now, I was looking on different hardware suppliers, boards and different other places. I found a Tyan board [URL]. The hardware spec is quite interesting and the board would fullfill our claims.

how both storage devices will be supported by Ubuntu or Debian??

- SATA-Controller: AMD SP5100
- SAS-Controller: LSI 1068E

Ubuntu :: SATA Libata Verses Silicom Images SATA Module

Jun 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04, and happened to have an Silicom Images PCXpress card plugged in, and it kindly added the sil_sata module. This is fine for this chip set.I think that my earlier installation of Ubuntu 9.04 used Libata, which does support NCQ and also has good legacy support for the Intel Intel ICH7 chipset I have inside my Sony Vaio SZ notebook. Also, libata also support Silicon Image chipsets as far as I can tell from URL...I wish to remove the Silicom Images SATA modules and replace this with libata and then test the performance between the two device drivers.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Expand A Xen Disk Image?

Apr 15, 2011

I need to expand a 15GB xen disk ".img" to 50GB, it's got centos as the guest O/S.

I've been googling and there are alot of results but I'm still having trouble.

I don't remember if I used the default LVM partition scheme or if I did a FS. In fdisk it says linux partition but that's it.

I did the dd and cat method but fsck is complaining like usual.

I dd a file called tempfile and the append it using cat tempfile >> my.img then did resize2fs -f but it error out with "Bad Magic number on super block."

Server :: How To Expand Hard Drive With New One?

Oct 27, 2009

I have a linux box that I'm using as a ADSL router (slack 12.1).Until recently I had two hard drives in it, one for linux, and one for storing movies, music, etc.So, I have just bought another 1,5 TB disk. My plan was to add it to the same mount location: /opt/abram to expand my storage disk, only to come to conclusion that this can't be done. OK, it actually makes sense, if I thought about it I would realise it before. Anyway, what else can I do? Is there a way to add new drive to existing one in a way that would result in one 2,5 TB drive?

I tried it with mdadm, but as it turns out, it's impossible to crate RAID 0 without loosing all the data on sda1 disc. Also, it would be very cool if I could find a solution that would enable me to one day add a new drive to further expend my storage.I'm aware that I could mount my new disk to, let's say /opt/abram/Divx, or /opt/abram/mp3, but that's not the solution I'm looking for.

However, none of the drive existing on the RAID are partitioned so what I think has happened is the partition itself has created a difference of about 2 million bytes smaller than the others and thus unable to add the component.

How can I specify the exact bytes for my hard drive partition so that I can add this to the array?

Ubuntu :: Close / Minimize / Expand Buttons All Gone

Aug 1, 2011

I have just gotten back into Ubuntu and installed 11.04. However I happen to see alot of issues with this. Trying to run compiz and all bejesus is breaking loose on me here. The biggest frustrating one is this new desktop, after searching I found how to go back to old school way I use to use it.So, now I get into this desktop, start compiz after the other desktop totally barfed on me, this one is doing the same as well.I lost all of my little boxs at top to close minimize and expand the windows.

Seriously, they took something and turned it into this just so ppl quit complaining about moving from windows to this. I for one dont like it and it doesnt work right with nothing,(Sounds like windows ughh) very hard to navigate, where you think one thing is suppose to be and they totally moved it, took me half of yesterday to get my wifi working but only after I went back to old desktop, video wasnt working properly, only after I went back to old desktop.

It's two node cluster with clustered lvm volume group which is causing the problems.
