I just got a Patriot PS-100 mlc ssd drive and I cant mount it or put a file system on it. I've installed Gentoo on many normal hdds before and though it would be the same with the sdd.
I'm trying:
mkfs.xfs /dev/sda2
cannot open /dev/sda2 device is busy.
I have openSUSE 11.2 installed on my PC, the install went well and was quite pleased with the OS. Howeve, because I only had a small 40Gb hard-drive I decided to buy a new Western Digital Green 1Tb SATA drive for storing my music etc.Now this is where I have run into difficulty. I can't get the OS to see the new drive, I did a search and found some instructions on how to format, mount, setup the 2nd drive but I either missed something or I just didn't do it correctly.In the end I could see the drive under Nautilus and that was it.
I can't write to it because it says I don't have permission? I can't seem to make new directories, most likely because I don't have permission. If needs be I will be willing to go back to the beginning and start installing the drive again. I don't mean to beliitle the Linux OS and users but using Windows$ all my life (I'm 49) I find it a lot easier, but I am willing to learn this new OS (for me that is).
I've installed Ubuntu Server, and Webmin following this guide, and all is well so far... I've mounted some drives with some pre-existing data on them, and can view the data on those drives. But I have one drive that I can't seem to mount, and I'm pretty sure there's data on it. But I can't seem to find how to identify what format the data is in, ie.. ntfs, ext2, ext 3, etc. Its likely pretty simple, but how can you identify the drive format before you attempt to mount it?

I have a 1TB hard drive which is formatted with FAT32. Attempting to make a new partition I clicked the format drive button in Disc Utility. I chose Master Boot Record and something was written to the drive. So now I can't mount the drive and Disc Utility says that there aren't any partitions. I don't think this can be true because I had 200 GB of data on the drive and it would have taken longer to delete all that. At least I think...

I am getting a new 4kb sector HDD for my laptop, WD scorpio black 750gb, I would like to image existing partitions on 512bytes sector HDD and move them to the new 4kb sector HDD, what's the best way to do this.
present config is as follows:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders, total 156301488 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I am planning to keep the same three partitions as the primary partitions on the new drive and add few more logical partitions. I would have liked to move to GPT but since I need Win 7, I am stuck with MBR partiotion table.
Now, I understand how to partition an Advanced format disk, what I want to know is how to move the existing partitions on the 80 Gb disk to the new disk?
I use Clonezilla to copy partitions but it is not compatible unless both the target and the source disks are already using 4096 sector size.
I can use Acronis True Image WD Edition to clone Win 7 but how do I clone Ubuntu?
Also my Laptop's chipset is limited to SATA 1.5, will it cause any issues, I know the bandwidth is not an issue.

For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.

I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.
Santa brought me an early Christmas present: a new External HD - Verbatim CLÖN - 250GBPlug it in and it works great. I have a SAN drive space connected to a SLES 10 (OES2) server. The server sees the drive at /dev/sdb1, and I was able to use fdisk to create a partition on it. I created a new directory /mnt/testvol, where I would like to mount the SAN drive to.
Fdisk shows the volume to be at /dev/sdb1 and lists it as Linux filesystem.
I used this command to try to mount it:
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/testvol -t nfs
and I get this error:
mount: directory to mount not in host:dir format
I have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. Its annoying to unmount my flash drive twice.. its not a major problem actually but its kinda annoying , its whenever i plug-in my flash drive.. everything works well except when i need to un-mount it.. I usually unmount it twice using right-click of the mouse, then it mounts itself back, so i have to unmount it again.. Is there any way to control this? How do i setup the auto-mount option for USB flash drives?

Now for the problem, when I have both the 1TB drives in I can not format or mount either 1TB drives. Says Device is in use or "The device file '/dev/sdc1' does not exist"
Now if I take one of the 1TB drives out I can format, partition, and mount it no problem...it only seems to be a problem when both drives are connected...

Since I've upgraded to 10.04, my boot process halts and tells me (paraphrasing) /shared is not ready to mount. To continue, pres S to skip or M to manually mount the drive.
Well, I have it mounting now through GVFS and I don't need this in my startup anymore. Frankly, it's just annoying that it won't boot into Ubuntu right away. So, what's the startup file I need to edit to remove the attempt to mount the network drive?
no entries exist in the /dev folder for hdc,cdrom,dvd, or any other drive or drive type than hda. The only other similar device is sg0 which doesn't work either. I have tried every variation of mount I can find with every available drive and drive type and nothing works, but this is the drive I installed FC14 with, and it installed perfectly (except for forgetting where it came from!!)Do I have to install a module or recompile the kernel just to get linux to recognize the drive it came from?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Xubuntu and suprisingly it did not ask me to create a partition within its installer like Ubuntu does. So now, I am left with 150mb of free space. I want to expand that amount. The problem is, I do not know where it has been installed on. I have a C and an E drive. Currently, the C drive is mounted and the E drive will not mount even if i press the mount button. Does anyone have a solution?
