Jun 5, 2010I have two 1TB HDD's formatted in NTFS, one has windows and other stuff i use even on linux and the other is all media. i can mount them easy, but this is a minor annoyance because everytime i log in i must type in my password. is there no way to have them auto mounted on startup?

1. Sata 1TB. It has Windows xp and ubuntu 10.10 on it
2. old 30G drive. It has ubuntu 10.04 on it
3. Old 120G with ubuntu 10.04
I installed the oses on each drive by disconnecting the others. So each drive has a boot record, and I can choose by pressing F11 at boot. All ubuntus can see and mount the NTFS partition except the one I installed last. It's on the 120G drive.

I tried to right-click on the hard drive and then select the mount command inside the gnome desktop environment but it gives me an error. Is there an easy way to mount and unmount this hard drive? The hard drive itself is formatted from the factory in NTFS. I'm going to leave it in this file format is a need to use it with Windows machines as well.

Ubuntu Security :: Mount The Image Or Extract The Image To Another Drive?
Feb 16, 2011I was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.
Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.
I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.
Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.

Jun 14, 2010I am trying to recover some important data from a 273 gig NTFS partition that was used in windows 7. The laptop was dropped and would not boot the next day. As an external drive I could see 2 smaller partitions (30 gig and 500 meg), but the main partition was RAW and requesting to be formatted... so I came to learn about Knoppix 6.2.1 as my live boot cd and ran ddrescue to recover an almost complete image of the bad partitionddrescue -n /dev/sdc1 /media/sda1/image.img /media/sda1/logfile.logI then ran it one more time:ddrescue -r 1 /dev/sdc1 /media/sda1/image.img /media/sda1/logfile.logthe image was made with 741 errors (amounting to 160 megabytes)So Now I have my partition as image.img which I want to mount.
First I tried

Apr 8, 2010I have a server with 3 hard drives
1 400GB
2 1TB
The 400GB has the OS and SWAP while the 1TB are going to be used as storage....
Now for the problem, when I have both the 1TB drives in I can not format or mount either 1TB drives. Says Device is in use or "The device file '/dev/sdc1' does not exist"
Now if I take one of the 1TB drives out I can format, partition, and mount it no problem...it only seems to be a problem when both drives are connected...

We are trying to see if we can get the FTP'd VMware Virtual machines to run on another WMware node.
However Vmware use's NFS so we can't mount the drive as it's NTFS.
We are attempting to mount the NTFS drive in ubuntu. Can this be done and can it be turned into a NFS share without formatting the drive.

May 14, 2010I have an 80gb hard drive that I used in an xbox for xbmc and it was formatted to whatever it needed to be formatted to for it. Now that I want to use it in my computer, I can't format it back to ext4 or NTFS. It's somewhat recognized, but the partition shows up as unknown. Is there a program that I can get to reformat it? idk if gparted will work cuz it won't startup on the live CD. I will give it a shot once I install ubuntu onto the computer.

After finding out my computer couldn't but up from a external hard drive I wanted to format my drive. When I plugged it into my computer, Windows would not recognize it. I was wondering what I could do since it isn't doing anything in the first place. I just want to format the whole thing.

May 3, 2010I just tried mounting my Iomega 1tb hard external hard drive, but it doesn't seem to work. The drive doesn't show up in nautilus. When I look at it with parted it shows as a ms-dos filesystem. If I plug it into my imac, it shows doesn't mount either, but in the driveutility it shows up as a fat32.Windows 7 doesn't seem to helpfull as it just says that the drive needs to be formatted.Is there any way to recover my files before I format, or better yet solve this problem without formatting?
