Ubuntu :: GParted - Expand Partitions Into Free Space

I decided a few days ago it was time to reinstall ubuntu since Lucid looked fun and interesting. Everything went really well (my table functions even worked with no configuration!) until I decided I wanted to resize my linux partition so I could install a win 7 virtual machine. I had some issues getting gparted to let me expand my partitions into free space, so I started diking around with various settings commands and I managed to screw up my partition table badly enough that I needed to boot with the live cd. After a few hours in panicked trouble shooting mode, I finally got grub reinstalled and managed to boot things regularly. But now Gparted is completely nonfunctional; it shows the entire HD as unallocated and says "can't have partition outside of disk". Apparently one of my partitions is oversized.
Here's my output of fdisk -lu and sfdisk -d:

My machine is running Windows 7, but I've decided to dual-boot Ubuntu. I'm on the manual partitioning screen. Originally, the Windows drive took up the whole drive. I took 100 GB off of it to use as an Ubuntu drive. From that, I created the swap partition. Afterwards, I decided I wanted some more space for Ubuntu; so I took another 40 GB off of my Windows partition. Now I have 2 free space partitions. How can I combine them? It seems I'm only allowed to install Ubuntu on one or the other.
Two nights ago I installed the KDE Spin of F15 and it all went smoothly. Then, I decided to try and use Windows' bootloader (it was a dual-boot) instead of GRUB. So I booted into Windows, spun up EasyBCD, added the correct entry for Fedora, and overwrote the MBR. I rebooted and tried to boot into Fedora, only to realize that the Windows Boot Manager had a failsafe that sensed when it didn't boot into Windows, and it stopped me from booting into Fedora.
At first, I booted into my live USB and tried to get GRUB back. After a couple Konsoles full of GRUB telling me that it couldn't mount the drive and install itself, I decided I was probably doing something wrong and it would be much easier to just reinstall Fedora.
I deleted the Fedora partitions I had made earlier from Windows (because it was already running). Then I booted into my live USB and tried to install Fedora. I clicked "OK" to make a partition (that would mount at /boot) that was 500 mb. It told me there wasn't enough space, but sitting right next to one of the already installed partitions was more than 190000 mb of space. So I tried to redo the partition with 250 mb, then I tried to make the swap partition and the main one (that would mount at /). I kept getting the error. I decided maybe it was a problem with the USB, so I rebooted into Windows and reinstalled the ISO onto the USB (with unetbootin) and repeated the process, only to get the same error.
P.S- I tried to use the option to "Use Free Space" as well as doing it manually and got the same error. Also, I saw another thread where a person with my same type of compute (a Lenovo Y560) had a similar problem. It might be possible there's a hidden partition for Lenovo's purposes? Anyways, the other user's solution was to move the an extended partition somewhere. I'll be posting an fdisk soon, in case I have the same problem as the other user. The other user used GParted, but it looks like I can use Easeus too, which I already have installed.

I have logical partitions on my drive numbered /dev/sda5 through /dev/sda14.I want to reclaim unused space from one of the partitions in the middle /dev/sda7. First I intend to resize /dev/sda7 by leaving the beginning of the partition as is and shrinking the end to create some unallocated space between /dev/sda7 and /dev/sda8. Then I would like to create a new logical partition in this unallocated space. My question is what will be the device name of the newly created logical partition? Will it be /dev/sda15 (I hope)? Or will it be /dev/sda8 and all partitions after this be renamed?
The GParted manual states that if a partition is deleted, all of the following partitions will be renamed, but it doesn't say anything specifically about renaming partitions after adding a new partition in the middle of a partition table.
I'm trying to install Fedora 13 on my HP dv6 laptop and when I try to use the Use Free Space installation type, I receive a Partitioning Error: Could not allocate requested partitions - not enough free space on disks. Before I started the install, I used the Disk Management utility in Windows 7 to shrink the volume of the C: drive down to 242 GB and leaving 210 GB Unallocated. Here is what the screen looks like when I select Create Custom Layout (also receive the not enough free space error):
I have Dell Laptop 1545 which already installed windows 7 home premium which is also having two partitions one is reserved by the oem and another is for recovery partition and another 200gb i am using for windows 7 now i have left only 80gb hard disk. So I started to install the Fedora 12 in my laptop every thing is going fine but
at the time of creating the partitions iam unable to allocate the partitions the left 80gb i tried to select and tried for custom partition but to my surprise it is giving the following message "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks"
I have 160gb laptop. i installed vista in c primary partition which is 25gb and installed ubuntu in d primary partition which is 20gb. A remainig for my data. Now i tried to install CENT OS by formatting ubuntu. I inserted CENT OS DVD and restarted and i selected to delete my /dev/sda2 which is showing 20480mb and it shown me free space. but i tried to add partion /boot of 100mb it got added. but, when i am trying to add / of 3000mb in the remaining 20380mb free space it showing an error message that no free space is available.
I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.
Created abt 16.4 gb free space using Disk Management in vista. I read the sticky on installing from the live cd and did accordingly. Whatever Partition i create first (boot or /), it gets done. However, when tryin to create the 2nd partition, i get "Could not allocate requested partitions:Not enough free space on disks." Cant proceed any further.
I want resize my partitions, i need more space for ubuntu, i already have 58gbs of free space, but i dont know how i can expand my partitions, i have tried "GParted Partition Tool", but it won't allow me to do it. The only other thing i can think of is re-installing ubuntu, and if i have to reinstall it how can i retain my settings and programs that i have installed?
I've got a 500gb hard drive. -sda1 is 400gb (ubuntu 9.10/32bit/ext3) -sda2 is 50gb (ubuntu 10.04/64bit/ext4)
I would like to expand my lucid partition now and eventually get rid of my 9.10 partition. I've got an 80GB virtualbox file sitting on sda1 that I need and want to expand sda2 now so I can first copy the VB file over, then expand sda2 completely. I just finished creating sda3 ext4, but cant figure out how to merge it with sda2 (well really sda6). Please see image. [URL]
I created a dual boot on my computer with windows vista and ubuntu using the wubi ubuntu installer for windows, and my ubuntu boot is limited to 15gb of hard drive space. My hard drive in actuality has about 150gb left on it. How do I expand the amount of storage ubuntu is allowed to use?
I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.
I clean installed Ubuntu 10.10 by shrinking my Windows 7 partition slightly. Now that I want to expand my Linux partition, I shrunk my Win 7 partition from Windows OS. From Ubuntu, the partition manager shows /dev/sda1 contains the Win 7 and unallocated partition. /dev/sda2 contains the Linux and swap partitions. I can't seem to expand my Linux partition (ext4) in sda2 with the unallocated space in sda1. I also can't shift the unallocated space in sda1 to sda2. Any idea how to expand my main Linux partition with the unallocated space?
I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed along side of Windows 7 on the same partition. I'm a bit of a noob as I have only recently got serious about using Ubuntu daily. I was wondering how I could go about expanding the space Ubuntu can use seeing as how I don't have it set up as a separate partition.
I am not sure where to post this so move please if its the wrong place. A few weeks ago i decided to try out Ubuntu, so I installed it as a dual boot, along with Windows 7. Now i have decided to switch fully to Ubuntu, so I have formatted the windows partition. Now however i am not sure how to allocated the unallocated space and expand the Ubuntu partition. Is even possible?
i used gddrescure to clone an 80gb harddrive and this is the result ROFL.i guess you can only do this making sure the target drive is the same size, you see i didnt know lol so..i now have THIS problem.can anyone tell me how to turn my unallocated space into a usable 'free' space? i could play with gparted right now but i dont wanna do anything wrong, so if theres anyone who can tell me how to do this.
So, I wan't completely paying attention to the default partitioning that Red Hat Enterprise 6 does.
I was setting up a base image for VMWare and the disk was 200GB, but for some reason the default is for about 40% to go to the root partition and then the rest of it to go to /home (this doesn't include the 2GB or so in swap).
Is there an easy way to recover the space under /home and expand the root partition? Assume there are no user accounts created.
I was trying to install Fedora 13, on to my laptop. I have 30 GB of unallocated space in extended partition. When trying to install Fedora 13, I got stuck, as the installer says that there is no free space for installation.can convert the unallocated space into free space.
I have red hat linux server and it has mysql installed whenever i write on terminal command mysql -u root it shows error "ERROR 2002 (HY000): can't connect to local MYSQL server through '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock (111) "
And another problem is that it is showing 0 byte free space istaed of freeing the space. it may seems that both problems are dependent on each other.
I have what is a weird problem, at least I think it is. I deleted some files and now my partitions do not show up in Gparted. Instead, the entire disk shows up as unallocated space. I am still able to run every partition, one of which is ubuntu and another which is Windows without any other apparent problems. here is my fdisk -l:
I was moving and resizing my Ubuntu partition and for some reason my hard drive stopped reading and royally screwed my partitions up.I know there is a command line tool in linux where you can view what partitions could be there and choose to ressurect them etc. but i cant remember what its called
I just wiped my HDD and installed Windows XP (35gb Partition) and then Ubuntu 10.10 (75gb Partition ext4) and I want to know if it's possible to make my XP partition a bit smaller, like 20-25 gb, and then add what I take off to the ubuntu partition,because I won't be using xp that much, only for things that I know work on windows only.
My harddisk had one extended partition, sda2, split into several logical partitions: da6,sda5,sda7,sda8,sda9 in this order. sda6,sda8,sda9 were [the only] PVs in one [and only] volume group.
I tried to delete sda7 and to resize sda5 (both unrelated to the LVM setup) to take the freed space. I entered both changes in GParted and clicked 'apply'. It gave some error, but had apparently deleted sda7, without resizing sda5. I tried to resize sda5 again, it again gave an error again, but sda5 was resized. I did not save any logs from GParted. Then I saw that the partition names had changed to sda8,sda5,sda6,sda7, in this order.
Now when I run 'vgdisplay', I get the error "Couldn't find device with uuid ....". Running 'blkid' gives the uuids of sda5,sda7,sda9. According to GParted and fdisk, sda9 does not exist. Also, according to blkid, the uuid of sda7 is what used to be the uuid of sda8. I am very confused. As you could expect, I don't have backups, so... (I am now creating a copy of the whole disk, in case things go even more wrong)
I have a little problem. As soon as I boot my computer, Grub gives me an error 17. It happened after I tried to resize my Windows partition with a program. I have a dual boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04.I've tried everything I could find on this forum and on the rest of the internet, but nothing was working. Most of them require a Windows CD (god knows where it is) or reinstalling grub and all that stuff, but it's all not working.I'm currently on a Ubuntu Live CD. Gparted doesn't detect any of my partitions, but just says 232 GB unallocated space. Palimpsest Disk Utility and the Explorer see all my partitions though EXCEPT my Windows 7 partition I tried to resize.
I have a messed up system, or so I think. I have all sorts of partition issues that I just don't understand. I may have installed Ubuntu multipe times (GRUB show 5+ copys) along side my copy of W7. GParted show two Unused partition spaces, one massive on that it cant read completely (ntfs), a LinuxSwap, something called (ext4) and something called (extended).
What is going on? I recently deleted a virtual machine, but it looked like this even before this. How can I allocate all of my space only to W7 and one Ubuntu OS? Pic of GParted is attached.
