Hardware :: Reinstall OS To Fix Sound?
Feb 3, 2011
I've had a persistent problem with the sound under my Debian systems. It doesn't depend on specific hardware, as it has continued even as I changed soundcards, swapped out the motherboard and so on. The problem is that sound produced by flash starts to fail about a day after a flash sound is first used. I tried a variety of things, installing different stuff, pulse audio, etc. Nothing made it work.
That's the bad news. The good news is that I booted Ubuntu off the live cd. I had to install flash, and then I was off and running, and it's been working for several days now. It appears that this Ubuntu doesn't suffer from the problem. Now one solution is that I can ditch Debian, wipe out my existing install and install Ubuntu. (I'm a bit hazy on what distinguishes Ubuntu from Debian if I replace the window manager.) I could also try reinstalling Debian and see if at that point things start to work.
But in recent conversations here, some people have suggested that reinstalling the OS is not the linux way. So I wonder, can I look at the sound installation in the working Ubuntu live cd that I'm running now and figure out what to change so that my nonworking system starts working? I took a look at the alsa.conf, but that didn't differ significantly.

The topic that creeps people out. Maybe I'm screwed, but lets hope not. I'm gonna give you as much info as I know is needed. Acer TimeLineX 3820TG. ATI HD 5850 and Realtek Semiconductor Corp. soundcard. Using Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. When I first installed Ubuntu, the soundcard did not work properly i.e. no sound from jack or the mic didnt work either, I went to this page: [URL].. updated the ALSA as stated in the topic. After this, everything looked good. Everything worked except the flash-sound.
I have:
* Removed flash, firefox and chrome.
* Manualy removed the flashplugin.so, boath in $HOME and in /etc/<something>
* I tried to use this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=204022, but I think I ruined it moore. (Creates some symbolic links)
* Re-installed flash, firefox and chrome. I have tried FLASH-AID plugin in Firefox, I have tried donwloading flash from synaptic.
* Tried to figure somthing out on IRC, without success.

I was having issues with the mic or line in on my onboard sound card, while trying to get my tvtuner patched in, later I gave OSS a try, I could not get it to work and decided to go back to Alsa, now my soundcard is not functioning.I have followed quite a few different guides, one of which is the sticky, please forgive me for not remembering which guides. I'm going nuts over this.As you can see below it looks like it is still using the oss driver.

So I was messing around trying to uninstall Nibbles and reinstall since I have an issue starting that game and something happened and removed the submenu under Games called "Logic", which had another whole list of games.
Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

I bought a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 sound card because I had read online that this card was a good choice with Linux and came with universal driver software. I installed the hardware correctly (as it works with WinXP) but I'm not able to get it working with Ubuntu.

Installed 10.10 onto a brand new HD. Using the computer to introduct myself to both Ubuntu and file server concepts. I also installed Samba and was communicating wirelessly with 2 Win 7 machines. THEN I upgraded to 11.04, could not get wirless internal card (B43) to work. Everthing is a mess my 11.04 computer is a doorstop. I tried to reinstall 10.10 from the orignal distribution disk I had created. I would like to take off 11.04 and go back to 10.10 with Samba and a functioning wireless card. I have backed up files, I would just like 11.04 off and 10.10 back. I do not wish to deal with the wireless B43 driver and 11.04 for now.

For some reason after I accidentally put ubuntu (meerkat) into hibernation it won't load OS upon turning back on, shutting the computer down does the same thing. I get this error message: No Boot Device Available, Press Enter to Retry. For some reason my OS loads no problem if I am just restarting my system. This just started happening out of the blue.I've already reinstalled a couple of times off the live CD and also deleted and reinstalled GRUB2 with no luck. Now I'm thinking about trying to delete and reinstall my MBR, but I don't know the safest/best way to do this. Can I do this with gparted? Is this something that can only be done in terminal? I've seen commands like install - mbr ... should I use this route?

I have been using Ubuntu as my main OS on my desktops for a couple of years now. Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.

After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server
if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.
21:24:04.867 Patchbay deactivated.
21:24:04.868 Statistics reset.
21:24:04.886 ALSA connection change.
Cannot connect to server socket err = Connection refused
[Code].....
also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.

I just put a new computer together. I took the hdd from the old computer (AMD 550) and put it in the new box (i3). Debian boots up just fine. My question: will I benefit from a clean install/will my new hardware be fully utilized with my "old" install of Debian Squeeze? I should mention that Debian was installed on the hdd while I was using the AMD cpu, then I switched to the i3. I believe the answer is reinstall, but am just looking for confirmation *_*

I've restored a Clonezilla image of my Fedora 11 ext4 installation but realised that I hadn't backed up the ext3 /boot partition. I decided to create a Clonezilla image of the ext3 /boot partition from my laptop, as that has exactly the same partition scheme. I've restored that. I realise it may not work but it might save me reinstalling F11 from scratch. How does one reinstall grub in Fedora 11 given that /boot is on a separate partition? Booting from the F11 DVD in rescue mode, running chroot /mnt/sysimage and grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of months as a wubi install. I've been able to do everything in Ubuntu and have not had to resort to Windows at all. I do have another Windows computer that is networked to this Ubuntu machine. It must remain Windows so I do have a Windows machine for a pinch. The question is I'm thinking of reinstalling Ubuntu on this machine by itself . No more Windows at all. What will I gain & what will I loose.
