Hardware :: PC Fails To Boot - Pressing - Del - No Function
Dec 10, 2009
AMD single core CPU
Asus mobo A8N-VM
RAM 512x2 M
Ubuntu 9.04
When I turned on the PC in the morning. It failed to boot. Pressing [Del] had no function. The [Num Lock],[Cape Lock] and [Scroll Lock] flashed once. Please advise where shall I check.
I have a late 2009 MacBook, white, unibody, and I wish for the F1-F12 function keys to have their primary role as F1-F12 keys, but allow me to use them as media/volume/brightness keys as a secondary role, when the "fn" key is held down at the same time as corresponding key.
I have a file server running Ubuntu 9.04, with 2 1Tb Drives. I did a normal shutdown, and when I attempted to start the server again, it returns an error of Drive error. Then I must press F1 to resume. If I disconnect the 2nd Hard disk it will boot normally after pressing F1. If I leave the Disk connected it just hangs up after pressing F1. I can run it with 1 disk, but I cannot run it headless if I have to press F1 to start it every time.
i tried resetting my linux based PC and it did not come up thereafter. i power off and on the PC, yet it did not come on. i assistance in resolving this problem.
I have created a script which asks the user a few questions and then it configures the wireless network. I'd like to run it somehow while Ubuntu still boots by pressing a key for example. Let's say, while booting, when it comes to the script I made, it will sleep for a few seconds giving the user the oportunity to press the pre-defined key (eg: spacebar). Once pressed, then the script will load.
I am working as system administrator for the past 5 years, but only on Windows XP systems, I recently moved to Linux, frankly speaking a few days ago, and i got many problems with it. may be as i am a beginner. My Problem started with Ubuntu 9.04 amd 64 and now with 10.04 beta.
The main problem I installed the wine (I am aware that wine is not compatible with all softwares of microsoft) and Installed microsoft office 2007 and it installed successfully but after installation when I launched Microsoft Excel it got hanged (only the Microsoft excel) and loading logo stood on top of all applications, then I decided to restart and pressed the restart button from menu on the right top. but there was no further response, then I pressed the reset button after waiting for 3-4 minutes to get rid of that logo of Microsoft in the center of my screen.
Now, when the Ubuntu was booting, Text arrives and disappears fast saying dev/file system has errors the logo of Ubuntu 10.04 and dots of loading at the bottom arrived and text written in the bottom of that "on of the drives needs to be checked, please wait it may take some time" Press 'C' to cancel disk check up. Now, its checking for a long time maybe for 30 minutes and the bottom text disappears and the loading Ubuntu 10.04 logo still remains and nothing happening after that.
I Pressed alt+crtl+del 2 times, it restarts saying that saving some alsa process, then again the same thing after restart. If I press C, it displays in the bottom of Ubuntu 10.04 logo "/File system has errors" and the loading screen remains like that. Now what is the solution and what are the precautions to be taken while using Ubuntu, as I was interested in introducing Ubuntu to marketing managers of offices, who wonder on the Internet all the time finding stuff and getting attacked by viruses. If this type of problems continue in Ubuntu, it will not be safer to use it, as if it wont boot during sudden power failures, that could result in a big problem.
I bought a multifunction stylus sx218 Espon model and I can not run the scanner function. I did some research and found a few solutions and very functional. I hope someone solves the problem. My version of openSUSE 11.2.
I am doing some Linux kernel programming for my research project. I need to record the timestamp (by using cpuid and rdtsc) when an interrupt handler (top half) is first invoked. Due to the time critical nature of the problem itself, I have to do the timestamping inside the interrupt handler itself (the first operation when the handler is called). However, I understand that tasks that are not so time critical should be deferred to a tasklet function (bottom half) for processing because other interrupts are disabled in a (top-half) interrupt handler. I am currently out of idea on how I can pass the timestamp information that I have obtained in the interrupt handler to the corresponding tasklet function.
I'm currently using OpenSuse 11.1 web server. This is bad since 11.1 is no longer supported. the reason why I am using it is because Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() was no longer being used. (so I was told)
That being said, is there a way to get Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() to function on the newer versions of OpenSuSE?
the function terminates if no key is pressed for 10 consecutive seconds. I tried using the -t option as suggested in some forums, but my version of showkey doesn't have the option of changing the timeout. The options I get are:
-h --helpdisplay this help text -a --asciidisplay the decimal/octal/hex values of the keys -s --scancodesdisplay only the raw scan-codes -k --keycodesdisplay only the interpreted keycodes (default).
Is it possible to write a script to use this function and still keep the function active until an interrupt is recieved?
I am building a 10.04.1LTS server. I am putting the /root filesystem into a Software RAID1 partition. I want to keeo my /boot partition outside of RAID.Is there a way to have a boot partition on both sda and sdb so if one drive fails the second boot partition will work away - or should this be kept in with RAID also.
I was upgrading our lab's dhcp server to Lucid and it totally died. I have it running on a Debian recovery cd right now. I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)
My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.
Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...
[3.816673] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to killl init! Call trace: get_empty_filp panic
[code].....
Running it again I get similar stack stuff but it's a different place: [3.541816], [3.427502] And sometimes if I wait for a minute or two it will continue on further but appear to crash again. Hardware details (everything is onboard - no added cards):
My Internet connection works fine when I boot Ubuntu with the CD and it does not work when I boot from the Hard Drive. It was working then it stopped. I tried to diagnose the problem but I am not familiar with Linux.
I opened a Terminal window and entered ipconfig (don't laugh ... sadly, i've been in Windows for too long) ipconfig was something that could not be found in my terminal window so i exited.
Next it was System->Administration->Network Tools. I ping'd www.yahoo.com and it said it could not find it. hmmmm. Let's see if restarting the system will fix it.
I did a shutdown and when it came back up; same problem. Ok, i really didn't think it would magically correct itself; this is Linux after all. Windows? Well sometimes you can fix things by turning them off and on. Next, another shutdown and I rebooted with the CD instead of the Hard drive and here I sit entering this help question in.
I am guessing that a file or setting got changed in /etc/someplace and I am not even sure of that. Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I am assuming that there is a setting which is correct in the CD version that is not not correct in the HD version and somehow i need to find what it is and synchronize it with the CD version.
I downloaded ubuntu 10.10 iso, made CD, installed as dual-boot with win Vista home premium and used it for a week to access the 'net and email. Yesterday, while deleting an email, the "d" key stuck down while I was issuing <CTRL>D and the cursor froze. I then rebooted by using the reset button and saw many lines of text including "kernel panic". so I reset and booted into 'repair boot'. Again, many lines of text which stop at the same place if I try this twice.
I assume I've fried my ubuntu install and would like to fix or re-install it. When I installed it, I let the [wubi?] installer make decisions except choice of drive because it picked the external, USB drive. It appears to've used about 80 G on internal drive D: I could boot from the distro CD and see if it will re-install but I'm concerned that I may not fix my problem or that it may mess up my windows installation.
ive just upgraded to ubuntu 11 and everything is good so far i love it but for some reason I have to press shut down twice as it does not seem to register the first time. This also happens with restart does anyone else have this problem or am i missing something ?? Just to clarify im clicking on the power icon in the top right then selecting shut down in the menu (not the power button on my computer).
I looked on the net for such function or example and didin't find anything, thus after having made one i guess it would be legitimate to drop it to see what others thinks of it.
#!/bin/bash addelementtoarray() { local arrayname=$1
I have a Asus EEE 1000h with ubuntu 9.10 remix. A problem on first asus eee's is the keyboard: also just typed a letter once, the laptop writes it double (every 200 letters more or less). For example it looks like this while writing: "thiss is a ttest" For Windows XP I found a way to fix it: i increased the time, that limits writing letters twice by fast typing. Its not the time "Repeat Keys" Delay (Keyboard Settings "Key presses repeat when key is held down")! In fakt its the opposite: It limits pressing the key to fast. (I hope you understand the problem *g)
I'm running a Toshiba Satellite laptop and am having trouble with the function or Fn keys. When running xev from the terminal I get no output for when I press the Fn key and I can't assign any keyboard shortcuts using it. However I'm still able to use some of the Fn+F# combos such as lock the screen or mute.
I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 and am using Unity as my desktop environment. Everytime I press the TAB key there is a mouse freeze for about a second. This happens whenever I do ALT+TAB or simply the TAB key by itself.why this may be happening and if I can do anything to fix it? It's really bothersome,
I have a strange problem, I have a multi-screen setup using 4 monitors on 2 nvidia cards using xinerama. It works as well as this setup ever works with X and KDE4.2. However when I hit Alt-F1 to get the terminal all I get is 4 blank monitors. The terminal is there because I can login and do stuff, I just can't see what I am doing. Press alt-f7 and I'm back to X and the four monitors showing my extended desktop.
This isn't a huge problem but does anyone know what might be wrong?
Can't get into terminal mode by pressing any hotkey CRTL+ALT+F1 .... F6.Displays seems to freeze, a blank screen is shown whit some bright spread pixels at the top. Although I can return to graphical mode by pressing CTRL+ALT+F7 without problems.
i install cheops-ng-0.2.3.tar.gz on my fedra13,installation was ok,but when i press alt+f2 and type cheops-agent[the server],it won't run, there would be no process called cheops-agent,but when i run it in terminal i can run cheops-ng [the client],what is wrong?
on my Fedora box, updates have caused some major issues. Since kernel 2.6.30, the boot sequence goes through my BIOS boot, then to Grub, and then just flashes colours repeatedly. Red, green, white, black, blue, over and over again. This happens for 2.6.32 also. I have to boot into 2.6.27 in order for it to work properly.
I'm using a Dell XPS M1730 with (I believe) an NVidiao 9800M GTX graphics card. I'm using the "Gallium 0.4 on NV84" graphics adapter.
I recently created a bootable pen drive using unetbootin of Ubuntu 10-10 release. It was failing with error message similar to 'specify the init' then formatted the pendrive/usb and now it was giving, SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian 2008-07-15 EBIOS CopyRight ..... Could not find kernal image. boot: when you press enter it again goes to Could not find kernal image. boot: linux
I believe this is due to USB creator. Let me try with creating bootable USB from some windows machine.
Yesterday night everything was normal until I rebooted to Fedora. This morning I switched back to Kubuntu 9.04 and the keyboard had a strange behaviour. Every button needs to be pressed ~2 sec. in order the letter to show up. And that happens in every application (shell, firefox, etc). I tried to upgrade to 9.10 hoping that it will return to defaults but the problem persist. Please help solve this issue, my work is hanging and all the programs I'm using at the moment are installed on my Ubuntu partition.
