CentOS 5 :: How Mirror List Works And Decide Status

Apr 1, 2009

I was puzzling over the nss dependence problem that people are having in upgrading 5.2 to 5.3. The issue is clear (that the mirror people are using for [updates] is not pointing to the latest set when an uptodate mirror may be being used for your [base]). My question is though how the mirror list decides whether a mirror is fresh. According to [URL] then this mirror [URL] is "green" which presumably means that the system thinks it is up to date (last probe was 1 hour ago). However if you look at the files on the mirror now (12:54 BST, Apr 1 2009) you see that the date of the 5/ branch is 24-Jun-2008. Thus this host is not ready to give you updates to 5.3. Is this a bug?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Status Only Works As Root With New Router?

Jul 27, 2010

I recently bought a new wireless router (Cisco E1000) to use in my house. The E1000 supports mixed-mode 802.11n/g/b, which is what I have enabled. It is the first 802.11n router I've had. My netbook (an HP/Compaq Mini 110) only supports b/g. When connected to this new router, I can only see my status as root. NetworkManager shows a little red exclamation point, and 'iwconfig' shows nothing. It's missing in the 'iwlist scanning' list. Even still, I'm connected and can do everything just fine. However, everything shows up fine when I run 'sudo iwconfig' or 'sudo iwlist scanning'. These have always worked as a standard user before.

Ubuntu Installation :: Bad Mirrors In Official Ubuntu Archive Mirror List?

Oct 14, 2010

I'd been wondering why I hadn't gotten any security updates since upgrading to Maverick RC a week or two ago. It turns out that it's because I'd let Ubuntu's Software Sources application "select best server" for me, and the server it chose (mirrors.ccs.neu.edu) doesn't appear to include updates for any versions of Ubuntu except Intrepid Ibex!

How crazy is that? The general list of Ubuntu mirrors reports the mirror as 'up to date', despite the fact that it doesn't actually maintain updates for current versions of Ubuntu. This strikes me as a serious problem. Software Sources should not select as a "best server" a mirror that doesn't even contain updates for your version of Ubuntu.

I don't want to rebuild it from scratch if the root drive goes belly up, but I do NOT have a hardware raid controller.

I was thinking I could put in another disk (same size or bigger) and use cron to run something like this nightly: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sda2

CentOS 5 :: LVM2 Clustered Mirror Monitor And Repair?

Apr 8, 2009

I am using LVM2 Clustering to mirror logical volumes between 2 different storage arrays ( iscsi target hosts). Everything is up and running fine, but I would like to be able to monitor the status of the mirror(s), and "re-sync" them if necessary.

I have attempted the locate the information from Google. From what I have read, lvdisplay -v should tell me whether the mirrors are in sync, but it either is not, or I am simply miss reading it. I have come also across information stating lvchange -m [ 0 | # ] should be used to add or remove mirror copies. Is the is correct / only way to "resync" a mirror, in the event that I can determine the mirror is actually out sync?

For those who are familiar with Symantec's VERITAS volume manager, I am looking get the equivalent information related to plexes from vxprint, the equivalent function from /etc/vx/bin/vxreattach -br, and the progress information from vxtask list. I hope the information is currently "search challenged", or I am simply not fully comprehending what I have found.

CentOS 5 Server :: Setting Up The Local Installation Mirror?

Jan 11, 2010

I've just set up the local mirror for my 96 CentOS 5 workstations. The mirroring script is taken from public-mirror howto and looks like this:

#!/bin/sh
rsync="/usr/bin/rsync -avHzL --delete --delay-updates" # replaced -q with -v for debuging purposes, removed --bwlimit, added -L to follow symlinks
mirror=centos.politechnika.lublin.pl::CentOS # tried several different same result

[Code]....

I tested mirror consistency by putting the mirror addres I'm syncing with, directly into repo file. Than yumex works fine. I tried several different mirrors with the same result.

Ubuntu :: Nothing In Gwibber Works / Account Is Never Added To The List?

Jul 9, 2010

Never really used Gwibber before and I'm rather lost here. Whatever I do I can't seem to get anything to actually work. I'm not getting any error messages, but my Gwibber window remains blank no matter how many accounts I'm adding...

Facebook - I click add "add", I select Facebook, I enter my details and they successfully authorize my account, but the account is never added to the list. After closing the accounts window it's completely gone.

Twitter - Click add just like with Facebook, enter my details and it's added to the list. When I close the accounts window it shows up to the left of my main screen like it's suppose to. I notice Gwibber is refreshing, but nothing appears! Completely blank screen, completely empty inbox. I can type an update, but when I click send it's just cleared. Nothing is updated and nothing appears on my Twitter profile.

I try entering a phony account and it's the same deal. No error messages, Gwibber is refreshing but nothing is appearing.

Flickr - All I can do here is to enter my username. I don't know what's suppose to show up in my inbox, but again, nothing. No error, no feedback, not messages... nothing.

CentOS 5 :: Status Of System-config-netboot?

Jun 29, 2010

I am very interested in using CentOS as a server for diskless PXE booting and was wondering if this was a possibility. I have a working DHCP/TFTP/HTTP system set up and going and I can get my client machine to boot a linux image without any problems. Ideally I would like the diskless machines to be able to immediately load an image through PXE and store their own filesystems on the server through the use of NFS.I heard about system-config-netboot and got very excited because it sounded like something that would help me set up a diskless system. However, after doing some research I have heard from many that it is generally buggy and unlikely to work. When I tried using it I got the error: "The diskless directory must be NFS exported and contain a boot sub-directory"Even though my diskless directory WAS nfs exported and most definitely contained a boot sub-directory. Does anyone have any advice on using this tool, or using CentOS as a server for diskless clients?

General :: Can't Decide On A New Distro?

May 9, 2010

I've had Ubuntu (8.10) on my netbook in the past and I really liked it. I'm currently running Fedora and feeling like I should "change it up" again. I've played around with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid a little, and so far I'm very impressed. I've always wanted to try Arch, but I'm worried I won't have the driver support I need for all the non-standard hardware in a netbook.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a new distro to try? I'm preferably looking for something feature-rich over light-weight, and something that I can have up and running with a minimum of configuration (at least partially working).

I've been trying out various variants of Ubuntu (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, Ultimate Ubuntu, to be specific) as well as the latest Fedora. The only thing that I can distinguish between the various distributions is the desktop environment that it uses (but some distributions, like Fedora, have multiple versions) and the software packages it comes with. But sofware can always be installed afterwards, and so can desktop environments, so what varies between the various distribution branches on a deeper level, on the things that the newbie user like me can't directly see? And is there any easy way to compile my own version of Linux?

Ubuntu :: Twitter Status / Update Pidgin Status In Lucid

Jul 5, 2010

I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).

Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).
