Hardware :: HP F4480 All-in-one Doesn't Scan But Prints
May 8, 2010
I have recently purchased an HP F4480 all-in-one printer.The printer part works, and so does copies (I think all copiers work without needed to be plugged into the PC).It however won't scan. I'm assuming I am missing some driver for it, but I can't seem to find it. I have even tried contacting HP support but no luck.I'm a tad surprised, I heard HP was great with Linux.Anyway, I tried to find the scanner manually, in the Control Center, tried sane, xsane, kooka. Nothing is detecting this printer.If it matters, I am using Mandriva 2009.1 Powerpack edition.

I'm struggling on installing a KONICA-MINOLTA printer magicolor 4695MF printing properly with Linux Mint Debian Edition (up to date). The test page works fine...
KONICA-MINOLTA delivers 2 PPDs: one for standard printing and one for OpenOffice printing (available on the KONICA-MINOLTA support site).
Leaving a side the one for OpenOffice which is poor in using the capabilities of the printer, I concentrate only on the global one (M4695PX.ppd).
It's much more difficult for other applications, starting with EVINCE: some PDF files are printed properly (i.e. those generated in OpenOffice by the CUPS PDF printer), others come out as one only blank page, regardless to the original length of the document.
So documents received from 3rd party may be "printable" or not. And trust Murphy, the most critical aren't printed...
Attached, the troubleshooting file generated by [system-config-printer] => [URL] ...

I have a parallel port printer connected using usb->parallel adapter. Sometimes the printer prints sometimes it doesn't.
A job will go the print queue and then sit there for ages. Sometimes if I unplug and then replug the usb->parallel cable the printer will print other times it will print half the document then freeze until the cable was unplugged and replugged again.
The printer never shows up in the list using lsusb (only my usb mouse and scanner do).
The printer is an hp deskjet 690c and worked fine under WinXP through a normal parallel cable. The one thing I haven't tested (but will test tomorrow) is the usb->parallel cable in XP.

I went through some trouble a few weeks ago to install a HP-P2014 printer in a Ubuntu 10.10 box.Now, it was not actually fixed, because the printer prints very light (gray even suppossedly black patches). It took me some time to realize that the problem was not in the printer but again somewhere in the software.The thing is I have another box with Kubuntu, installed at the same time. Connecting the printer to that box gets perfect printouts.
I have tried to strip the Ubuntu system of everything I could find related to the printer (CUPS, HPLIPS, ...) to manually install all the packages in the Kubuntu box (again: what I could find: I'm no expert). As far as I can tell, both machines are identical in that respect, but I still can get Ubuntu to print properly (in fact, it is not printing at all: it just keeps spitting blank pages out).

I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

I have my Epson C46 working on my Ubuntu 9.10 machine, my XP machines are showing the printer as ready and will send a test page to the Ubuntu printer but it doesn't arrive at Ubuntu - doesn't show in the print job list on Ubuntu but does in XP??
File sharing is now working in both directions.

I have an HP J4680 all in one that, for some reason, does not process the print job immediately when I send it. When I open my printer's properties it will list the printer's state as idle and when I go into the print que it tells me the job is scheduled for . . . (some time) which is, I think, about 5 min later by the clock on the task bar. I've been all over the settings and don't see anything that looks like it applies to that. Usually I've been restarting the printer and computer and then it will print when I send the job. Tonight I waited until the time and it did print according to the scheduled time. I need to find a way to always have it print right when I send the job.

In spite of the fact that the printer set-up is working with the Gimp and other more involved print-capable programs.
The printer is a Dell 3100cn color laser printer.
The best driver I found was one I got off of Dell's site - it was an RPM that I aliased (I'm using Debian lenny).
I set Openoffice Writer's printer configuration to "letter."
I check the settings in the print pop-up before I print.
And then the printer asks me for A4 paper.

My HP F4180 only prints blank pages. It can, however, print out a test page, so there's no issue with the ink or hardware, it seems. Also, it used to print properly in the past. I've run hp-check, but the program ends up with no warnings or findings. Likewise, the HP appelet ends every print job with a 'completed' status, seeming to think all's well. The only remote clue I've found so far: HP's troubleshooting tool noticed that the page format is 'letter' (small 'l') according to the printer settings in System>Printing, but 'Letter' (capital 'L') according to the Open Office printer properties dialogue box launched when trying to print. The troubleshooter referred to this discrepancy as a possible 'alignment' issue. Could this possibly account for the failure to print? If so, how could the two page size descriptions be made identical (they come from drop down menus which I don't know how to access)?

We have an HP F4135 printer which has worked fine for at least 2 years, now, but it has started acting up since installing Ubuntu on our computers.
We had been running Windows XP on the computer to which the printer was connected, but ever since we "upgraded" to Ubuntu the printer has been printing green in place of black whenever using it to print any sort of document from Firefox. This isn't black mixed with green; it's a bright, lime green.
For some reason, it works fine when it's printing something directly from the computer's hard drive, like a document, .pdf file, etc. It's only when printing from Firefox that it starts messing up, whether it be a file opened temporarily from a website or the direct contents of a web page.
We've tried adjusting the printer settings and the only thing that makes a difference is changing the Printout Mode from Normal (Color Cartridge) to Normal Grayscale (Black Cartridge). This seems to be the only thing to stop it from printing in green, but that really isn't a good fix, since it makes all the other colors turn to black, which isn't really fixing the problem.

I tried to install HP laserjet P1007 printer in my fedora 8 desktop. I followed these instructions:
yum -y install gcc*
wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz [URL]
tar zxvf foo2zjs.tar.gz
cd foo2zjs
[root@arnab~]# make
[root@arnab~]# make install
[root@arnab~]# make install-hotplug
$ ./getweb 1005
$ ./getweb 1006
$ ./getweb 1007
$ ./getweb 1008
system-config-printer
Then I found the printer and add it. But the problem is when I tried to try to print a test page, it shows "job1 submitted".....that's all. No page gets printed. If I try once more, it shows "job2 submitted" but again no results. I cant also see all the submitted jobs.

In the past when I had Slackware 12 with brother HL-2040 printer drivers installed, the printer was working fine. Then I upgraded to slackware 13, but I had too many problems with it so I downgraded back to 12 and reinstalled everything related to slackware 12. Now I can't get the printer to work properly. I installed both the LPR and the CUPS drivers (in RPM packages) provided by brother for linux. I find that now every time I try to print something (even graphics) in KDE 3.5 (for slackware 12), the printer prints excessive pages where the first page starts with something like this:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%%LanguageLevel: 1
Are there any special settings that I am unaware of that I should be changing in order for the proper printout to appear? Is there something special that I have to install that I wasn't previously told about?

I have 6 columns in the file, and the 6th column is too long. what I want is to print all columns form 1-5 and a part of 6th column.
Example: aa bb cc dd ee ff33ff
from the above example I want only to get the 1-5 columns and the numbers from 6th column so the output shoud be as:
aa bb cc dd ee 33

I actually have two reasons for posting this. One is to see if there's an actual name for characters like this:Hopefully that will show up correctly for you. If not, it's a little box with four numbers in it, one in each corner. I don't know their name or their reason for showing up, so it's hard to look for help.
My main problem, though, is that I wrote a program that prints some output to a console using ncurses as it runs. These characters show up on the console, seemingly at random, and disturb the whole thing. Sometimes I'll also get sets of characters like "[13;" I'm not printing anything bizarre on there, just strings and floating-point numbers.

I'm running a standard 13.1 32 bit install with an HP deskjet 990C, run off of USB. Until today everything has printed properly. Now nothing prints. Nothing has been installed unless it came through slackpkg, and yes it is still on the correct setting for arch and revision. CUPS shows printer as installed, accepting jobs an idle. No error messages are appearing but nothing is reaching the printer. The info I can glean is from the error logs in CUPS:

When i pipe commands through 'less' in console, i get a load of garbage mixed into the results, and no colors either. Mainly the letters 'Esc' printed a couple of times on each line.
I had been messing about with my bash config files but i can't see anything in there to affect this. If I pipe through 'more' there is no problem, only 'less'.

All seems well in Ubuntu printer setup and drivers. Cups, hpijs hplip etc., system finds printer and sets it up and from system/administration/printing the printer shows up with the right description Hp deskjet d2600 on local host. when I try to print I get message "started job" and another message "finished job" but nothing prints. The log Var/log/cups/error_log shows only one thing that I think is wrong "cupsd authorize:no authentication data provided". my user name john and one other Andy (I installed) show up in lp group. I could attach the whole error_log file if it would help. I am new to Linux but love it. I used Windows NT for years. I am the administrator on the box. Don't know what to try next.

Canon PIXMA MX492, installed drivers from Canon page a few weeks ago, printed test page just fine, printed a few pages after that.
This week I reinstalled Jessie, but with net install instead of live USB. Installed drivers from Canon, it all looks the same.
Localhost: 631 says print job complete, but nothing ever prints. Printer doesn't respond at all. Where print spool is going. I can't figure out what I missed. The install was so simple last time and it should have been the same.
The net install seemed to fix drawing tablet drivers, maybe broke printing somehow? Updated kernel for graphics firmware, but same version as a few days ago.

I configured my printer via YaST (Suse 11.3). YaST finds my printer and offers me the Gutenprint driver: Epson Stylus D120 with driver Epson Stylus D120 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.4 I selected this driver and finished the configuration.
The problem now is, that if I print something, the printer only prints a totally black page. How can I solve this? Should I use another driver?
PS: With Suse 11.2 and Gutenprint driver it worked.

I installed the 64-bit version of OpenSUSE 11.4 last week and tried to print from it today. I couldn't get anything to come out. I've tried both USB and network printing, and nothing ever works. Any attempt to print anything results in the HPLIP Status Service app telling me the job is "completed" immediately, with nothing printed, but the CUPS web interface reports "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed".
It's connected to the network router and hp-setup discovers it when I use manual discovery and give it the IP address, but it still won't print even a test page, whether as root or as a user. I've also used the CUPS web interface to add my user to the list of users allowed to print, and added my user to the lp group. But I still get the same error and nothing ever prints.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old box to use as an office print/fax and file server. I tried the server edition but I had no chance with command line programming so I've just used normal Ubuntu.
Ubuntu itself is working fine and I've installed my HP Officejet printer and it's fully working on the Ubuntu box. SAMBA and CUPS are installed.
I've then added the printer onto my Vista machine and here's where the fun starts. The Vista box sees the printer on Ubuntu, adds it with no problem and happily prints test pages, but I can't get it printing anything else.
I can't for the life of me find any reason why it would print a test page, but not print from Word, adobe or even a browser.

Yesterday I bought the DCP-9010CN printer. When connecting it to a network it replies to pings, and its web-interface is perfectly accessible. Network printing is also possible from a Windows XP computer, but from a Linux box I can only use the printer via its USB connection.
Following Brother's installation instructions I got stuck after changing the USB configuration to the network configuration.
Attached is a more detailed report of my efforts. The attached file consists of several numbered sections, section 6, near line 350 describes my experiences when configuring the printer for USB printing and then for network printing.
