Hardware :: HP Compaq Nc4010 BIOS Battery Information

Aug 1, 2010

I have an HP Compaq nc4010 laptop, with Debian experimental installed on it.In the BIOS utility, I can view what they refer to as "battery information".Unfortunately, it's all horribly abbreviated, so I can only guess what the labels mean.Is there any way I can acces this same information from linux, preferably with full labels and/or descriptions?

CentOS 5 :: Edit Bios - Compaq Evo 5.4 Web Server Fails To Restart From A Power Outage

Jun 7, 2011

I have a small problem on my Compaq Evo Centos 5.4 web server. The web server runs just fine, the problem is it fails to restart from a power outage. Simple edit the BIOS. No! For a reason I can't think of the keyboard stops working after a few key strokes following the F10 to enter BIOS setup. Then its a power cycle. If left to BOOT the PC and keyboard are fine. After hearing about viruses which get to the BIOS I will ask can NIX get that far so I can adjust the Power ON?

Fedora Hardware :: Battery Replaced - BIOS Not Load ROM From PCI Adapter

Jan 16, 2011

I just replaced the battery on my motherboard in an older computer that I was going to load Linux on. Before I replaced the battery, I booted up the computer and my old copy of win2k loaded up fine. Now that I have replaced the battery, the BIOS will not load the ROM from my PCI ATA adapters (one SIIG ATA 133 IDE controller, and one Promise ATA 133 IDE controller) which are hooked to my hard drives that I boot from (software raid 1) and the CDROM drive in the system (along with some other hard drives for storage). I removed the adapters and stuck them in another computer to check them. They both loaded their ROM's into the BIOS of the other computer. So the cards are fine. The computer has an award BIOS. I have checked all of the settings and reset the CMOS again, but it will not load the ROMs from the PCI controllers into the BIOS on boot.

General :: Get Processor Details Without Using Information From Bios?

Jul 31, 2011

is there a way to retrieve the processor model without taking information from bios? I don't know which processor is really mounted. I want to set up the right processor timing, but I don't know the processor type. Every time I change the timing for the processor in BIOS another processor type is determined (I should be an Athlon XP +1500, I think, but I don't know really).

I think with less /proc/cpuinfo the results depends on the timing that is set in bios. So could you tell me how I can find out which processor is really mounted?

Hardware :: Wrong RAM Memory Information At BIOS

Nov 4, 2010

I have 4GB RAM installed on my PC (ASUS P7H55M-BR, Intel i3 530 2,93Ghz). Onboard video has 32 MB (BIOS config).

It should be this way (or maybe not?):Each slot has 1GB of RAM memory: 4 x 1024 MB = 4096 MB.

Now, subtracting the video memory: 4096 MB - 32 MB = 4064 MB.

It's working on Dual Channel.

But when I am booting the system, the BIOS shows only 3920 MB (3,9GB). Linux shows even lower: 3881 MB.

Memory Remap Feature is enabled at the BIOS config.

Debian Hardware :: Lower Laptop Battery Charging State To Prolong Battery Life

Mar 2, 2010

getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactions and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery. So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.

Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery Maintenance utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.

I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.

Ubuntu :: Laptop With No Battery - Checking Battery State

May 1, 2010

Just installed 9.10 followed by a 10.04 upgrade (wouldn't work as a 10.04 clean install). The install and upgrade all seemed to go well.

But now when booting I get a message saying "checking battery state" and then it boots no further. This is a laptop without a battery installed, running permanently from the mains through the charger.

How can I disable this check so that the laptop will still boot without a battery fitted?

Code:
gconf-editor
Drill down to...
apps --> gnome-power-manager --> notify

uncheck the low_capacity checkbox. This should disable the popup for you if your battery has little life left in it. Now, if any knows how to disable the Avahi popup, let me know.

Ubuntu :: Compaq 610 No Headphones

May 10, 2010

Anyway, went on a wild goose chase for a couple of days trying to get a USB headset working with Skype, which I achieved, then I was informed today not required but built in mic and speaker was. Hmm. So, I succeeded in screwing things up when really didn't have time to fix it and now completely stumped.

Problem: Speaker works fine but front headphone socket now dead. Cuts out speaker but no sound. Headphone socket essential for user's day to day computing.

Tech details. Compaq 610 running Ubuntu Hardy 64bit.

Results of cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Code:
Codec: IDT 92HD71BXX
Codec: Generic 11c1 ID 1040
* Preferences in System->Preferences->Sound all set to Autodetect except sound

[Code].....

I have followed every howto and attempted every tweak out there and nothing has worked for me to get this headphone socket alive again. It was working fine before. Bottom line:

Ubuntu :: Installing RAM In Compaq R3000?

Feb 14, 2010

I'm trying to install a 1GB RAM stick into my laptop. The laptop comes with a 2x256MB setup. Only one of the sticks is physically accessible. So the maximum memory in the specs is 1.25GB. The stick is PC2700, same as the old stick. I am sure it is installed correctly. I took all static precautions. The BIOS recognizes the RAM - 1.25GB total. But Ubuntu just won't. I've got both 9.10 x64 and 9.04 x32 installed. Neither will boot. Memtest only shows the 768k of base RAM, and NONE of the extended RAM shows up - not even the initial 256MB.

I tried turning on boot logging, but the /var/logs/boot was still empty. When I turn off the splash screen, I see a whole mess of errors, which basically stem from the fact that there is no extended memory. What the hell is happening? This is the second RAM stick I've tried, so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. I only have two days to decide whether to return it!

I know the box is awake because I can go to a ctr-alt-fn console login and use it normally. How can I track this down? And is there some way I can restart the gui display from the console without losing what was running before I shut the lid? Right now the only way I can recover is to restart the computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install On Compaq C 505 TU?

May 22, 2010

i've got my friend into trouble in my zeal to wean away my friend from windows. i convinced him to go for a dual boot system of XP and U 9.10. first we successfully installed XP but then got stuck when we were unable to locate the chipset driver - not even the HP website (horrible) had it ! it seemed to offer everything from modem drivers to utilities but there is no trace of the chipset / motherboard drivers. we then tried to install U 9.10 and got an error message in the middle of the installation process. it has been discussed in this forum but without any clear resolution. basically, it said the following -

Code:
[Errno 5] Input/output error This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment. btw, all along we suspected that there could be something wrong with the HDD of his computer which is Compaq Presario C 505 TU. i then tried to install U 9.10 completely on the HDD and this time got the same error message! similar problems came up when i tried installing with U 8.10 and U 9.04 we finally gave up but did run a HDD test from within the BIOS (Phoenix). The result was clear and we got the message - "SMART pass". so basically the computer is not working now because there seems to be a problem with the chipset drivers while i can't get any version of Ubuntu to install on the machine

Ubuntu Installation :: Old Compaq Desktop Won't Boot From CD-ROM?

May 24, 2010

I wanted to play w/ Linux at home so I bought the O'Reilly "Ubuntu: Up and Running" book. I'm using the included 10.04 CD. I'm not finding much info on installing from a CD there (well, not finding it easily at least).

I got an old Compaq desktop (model 5WV280, if that matters) from a friend. I checked the BIOS listing; it lists the CD as the first boot drive, diskette second, hard disk third. I don't have the password for his account, but I didn't think that would matter.

Anyway, I inserted the CD, did a shutdown and power up. The CD drive spins and the light comes on. Next, the diskette tries to spin and the light comes on. Finally the hard disk access light comes on and the silly thing boots to Windows XP Pro from the hard drive.

Did I miss something? I put the CD in my (heaven help me) Vista machine, and was able to read the CD with no problems.

After using Ubuntu for a while I have decided I wanted to do a fresh install onto my PC, however being rather old it (about 6 years old), It seems I cannot get any recent kernels to run on the system. As such, I cannot get the live CD to boot. After searching for hours to find a solution I have found nothing.

Upgrading also breaks the system as well, So to do so wouldn't work.[URL].. with addition of a 256MB RAM chip and starting with a 512 rather then the 256 stated on the page. and a ATI Radeon 9800.

Is there anyway I can get newer kernels/Live CD to boot? I've tried all options i've found in other threads but no go.
