I'm trying to find a good USB headset that works with Fedora, does anyone have a good suggestion for this. I tried to do some research but some seem like they're a pain in the ass to setup.

When I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".
I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.
Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.
Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.
When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.
Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.

I have an older laptop (Dell Inspiron 4100) on which I have installed a minimal Slackware system, and have just managed to get wireless working by using a Linksys Wireless-G card (WPC54GS) and installing the b43 packages from the SlackBuilds site.
Unfortunately, I am experiencing system freezes ... and if my Google searches are correct, these are related to the firmware driver (b43 stuff).
I wonder if anyone can recommend a good wireless card that works with Slackware out of the box ?
Anyone know of a good usb wireless adapter that works out of the box with slack 13.1?

After i plugged in a pair of USB headsets, the speakers wouldn't work.

i can still use headphones plug to hear music and what not. but just not through the speakers.
I tried rebooting, playing around with the mixer and the settings, but nothing seems to help.

I am on Fedora 12.I have a USB bluetooth dongle and a bluetooth headset.The dongle gets recognised fine and I can pair the headset as well. PulseAudio sees the input and output of the headnet perfectly. It also runs perfectly for about one minute, and then the headset is disconnected. Why?During the sixty seconds where everything works, I also hear a beep (about every 20 seconds).After disconnecting I have to put the headset back into pairing mode and then remake the connection. View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got an MSI U123 netbook that has a built-in web-cam and mic. It has a fairly stock install of Fedora 13 on it. I'm trying to get Skype working and everything seems OK so far, except when I did the test call the playback of my voice was very low. I played around with a few settings and got a little bit better results, but still not acceptable. However, I also tried booting the netbook to Windows XP and tried Skype there. The results were a little better, but still not great. So, I'm thinking rather than a settings change the built-in mic probably just isn't going to cut it.
I've got a couple of headsets that have microphones that I've previously used with portable/cell phones. Both of these headsets have just one line that I'd typically connect to the headphone jack of a phone. Can this type of headset be used with my netbook, by connecting to either the headphone or mic-in jack, or do I need either a USB headset or a headset that has two lines (mic/headphone)? If my type of headset will work is there any type of "How To" doc on what needs to be set? I'm assuming I have to toggle some capture/mic/line settings. I haven't tried anything yet, but rather than mess around with a lot of settings and start banging my head against the wall I'd ask if this is even doable.
So this is really weird - my Logitech headset that I've been happily using with Fedora since Fedora 10 has suddenly started freaking out Fedora 14. Everything was fine until last night, I was listening to some music and it was getting late so I decided to switch to headphones. It was ok for half an hour then, when I think I (maybe, I can't be sure) knocked the USB plug in its socket, Fedora just froze. No coming back.
After a minute of plugging, unplugging, various attempts to get out of Gnome, etc. I gave up and held down the power button. Machine came back fine, I shrugged thinking it was 'one of those things', plugged in the headset again and *bam* - instant freeze! Weird. It's never done this before.
So I restarted *again* - this time plugged the headset in a different socket, same problem. Fedora froze as soon as I plugged it in.
Looking at the logs, here are some excerpts up to the crashes, in case they help. I think this is the lead-up to the initial crash code...
Again, right after those lines Linux froze and the log just tails off.
What's even weirder here is there doesn't seem to be any consistency, a repeating pattern before the crash - but it is always the instant I plug in my headset.
Anyone knows a way to switch automaticaly the ouput device to bluetooth headset when is connected?I'm using Fedora 14.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Logitech USB headset has been with me for *years* (since Fedora 10 and before, when I used to use Windows XP!) and it was always fine, but since I updated to Fedora 14 I can hear my own voice, really loudly, whenever I plug it in. I never had this problem before, I've ignored it for a while, but now it's starting to p*** me off. I can't listen to music without hearing myself breathing in the background! Really annoying...
how to fix this? I suspect it's a PulseAudio problem, but haven't been able to click my way around it...
New Fedora 15 user today and I noticed that FireFox 4.0.1 looks like it was written in the late 90's. I'm using KDE 4. See pic: What's causing this? Is it possible to do something about it? BTW, I installed Gnome 3 and KDE 4. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I am looking for a good and practical console application. I use midnight commander a lot, and I find it frustrating every time I press the F10 key it displays the drop menu items using the terminal. On occasions I make invisible the menu bar, by disabling in the view menu.
So I am looking for a good console application that when I use midnight commander if I press the function key buttons it doesn't display the drop down menu options.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm giving CentOS a new look as a desktop. Been a few years since I last installed it on anything but a server. While the default repositories have improved greatly I am still bereft of so much of my cherished and necessary software. No Gambas, Wesnoth (shows up but version is 2 years out of date), Chrome, Audacious ugly plugins, XMMS support for FLAC (shows up but errors out if I try to install), Cinalarra, Audacity, JACK audio, Ardour, Xine, Amarok, Blender, Gthumb, Abiword, gramps, disk utility, many KDE apps, it's almost like KDE is a forgotten desktop manager for CentOS repsositories and pages more of software I'm too lazy too list. All of this is software which shows up in Debian based distros and most of which in Fedora/SUSE repositories.
What are some good repositories for CentOS. I clearly have the wrong ones enabled or CentOS is a very crippled desktop. Here are the repositories I've added/have.

Is there any software in the fedora repos that can be used to edit videos? I tried kdenlive but it crashed randomly. Avidemux is stable but with little functionality. Cinelerra is supposed to be good but I couldn't find it in the repos.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a connection an its slow in both ff and chrome...however i can ping sites and get the same response time as my xp machine which runs fast. usually around the 40ms mark with no lost packets.
Also when i do installs eg. of chrome etc, i was getting up to 500kB/s download. I just cant seem to replicate this browsing, its loading up at a dial up pace. The last time I had an issue like this was setting up my mums work laptop on our home network where the work had specific proxy settings, so we turn the off and it works fine.
