Fedora Installation :: GXine Video Player Configured Correctly But Not Working
Aug 10, 2010Just installed the LXDE spin of 13 onto my acer aspire netbook. Couldn't make a usb boot stick, finally succeeded with an external card reader and unetbootin. Anyway, GXine isn't working, though it says its configured correctly. I'm very new to fedora and linux in general, played a bit with ubuntu 9.10.

Jun 25, 2010I've just installed Fedora 13 and so far it's been pretty painless. But i am having some issue with dragon player. I beleive i have all of the multimedia stuff installed properly. But i am getting no video or sound from dragon player. stuff plays fine in vlc.

Mar 1, 2010A recent (last couple of days) update to Fedora12 involving libunicap seems to have completely trashed VLC video player -- as in causing it to be completely uninstalled. No biggie, I thought; when I went to reinstall it, I saw that VLC 1.0.5-1 fc12 was available. Tried to install it, and KPackageKit calmly proceeded to throw up, telling me:

Wonderful. Now I don't have a video player that natively does mpg/avi; Dragon Player pretends to play them, but there's no video; same with Xine. BTW, I tried to report this via Bugzilla at Redhat, but couldn't find anything that resembled a way to report an actual bug/problem (what app doesn't work, how it doesn't work, any error messages).

May 7, 2011i've recently installed 11.04 and am giving banshee a shot. it seems pretty good although has crashed a few times. but when i import my music folders (about 900GB, 175,000 items .. and growing..) it takes days. that's not such a big problem because it only needs to be indexed once, i assume, ... but the UI is very slow now - so that clicking on an album can take several seconds to bring up the tracklist. also typing into the search box there is a large delay before the matches are shown. is this just to be expected for such a large db? i recall i had google desktop indexing and returning results almost immediately back on winblows.. other ones i have tried include rhythmbox , amarok, songbird .. but have not found any of them to be stable and simple enough to my liking.
can anyone recommend a good player , my essential requirement is a fast and efficient indexing - with tag support would be grand, but just based on filenames is ok too. drag and drop into a play queue like rhthmbox had would be nice.

(a copy of linux for dummies book)So naturally after getting adjusted to the new os I started seeking for downloadable media and applications.Started with flashplayer last night and installed after watching some videos.But when I tried the same thing with vlc through the terminal command; sudo apt-get vlc
The video streaming seased because they wouldn't load it stays searching forever! Now ..... doesn't work.I am afraid that by tampering with the command it also affected the flash player file.This is an ethernet connection , 100 mb/s, netgear router.

Our product was just going into production and now we need to hopefully find a version of Ubuntu that streams video! We couldn't go with Unbuntu 10.04 because the video streaming was 30% slower than 9.10.

Jul 2, 2009I just got a Proliant server and I loaded it with 4 cpu and 12Gb of ram. I use it only remotely and I am interested on using graphic software like FEM pre-post-processing and video generation. I am not sure if it will make sense to buy a video card more powerful as there will never be a monitor plugged into that card. Who does the video processing when I do rendering remotely through ssh -X or vnc? Is the server or the client responsible for that process?

Jun 16, 2010I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.
