Fedora Hardware :: Headset With Single Connection - Use The Mic?

Jul 7, 2010

I've got an MSI U123 netbook that has a built-in web-cam and mic. It has a fairly stock install of Fedora 13 on it. I'm trying to get Skype working and everything seems OK so far, except when I did the test call the playback of my voice was very low. I played around with a few settings and got a little bit better results, but still not acceptable. However, I also tried booting the netbook to Windows XP and tried Skype there. The results were a little better, but still not great. So, I'm thinking rather than a settings change the built-in mic probably just isn't going to cut it.

I've got a couple of headsets that have microphones that I've previously used with portable/cell phones. Both of these headsets have just one line that I'd typically connect to the headphone jack of a phone. Can this type of headset be used with my netbook, by connecting to either the headphone or mic-in jack, or do I need either a USB headset or a headset that has two lines (mic/headphone)? If my type of headset will work is there any type of "How To" doc on what needs to be set? I'm assuming I have to toggle some capture/mic/line settings. I haven't tried anything yet, but rather than mess around with a lot of settings and start banging my head against the wall I'd ask if this is even doable.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Create A Single VPN Connection

Jul 28, 2010

I have just taken on a dedicated server sitting somewhere in Norfolk. I have created a website that uses PHP to connect to another remote server in order to interrogate a MSSQL database. This script, running on Apache, uses a VPN connection to connect to the remote server. To test, I have Apache on my laptop at home and just used Microsoft Network Connection to create the VPN connection.I have now uploaded this site to my new CentOS server and need to create the same VPN connection. I understand this is a command level and have been advised to use OpenVPN which I have successfully installed. My problem is I only have the details remote ip address, username and password. I believe I have to use the 'client.conf' script instead of server.conf.

General :: Bonding Two WiFi Adapters Into Single Connection?

Nov 3, 2010

I saw a network once that used bonding (some people called it "port trunking") to combine two network cards into a single connection to get twice the bandwidth. I have a slow Wifi network with not so great reception. I actually have two spare WiFi cards and want to try to bond them so I can get a faster intranet (not internet). Has anyone successfully bonded two WiFi cards and had pleasant results? Is there an easier way to get better bandwidth with two cards? My router and my remote machine are both running Linux.

Fedora Hardware :: Bluetooth Headset Disconnects?

Jan 23, 2010

I am on Fedora 12.I have a USB bluetooth dongle and a bluetooth headset. The dongle gets recognised fine and I can pair the headset as well. PulseAudio sees the input and output of the headnet perfectly. It also runs perfectly for about one minute, and then the headset is disconnected. Why?During the sixty seconds where everything works, I also hear a beep (about every 20 seconds). After disconnecting I have to put the headset back into pairing mode and then remake the connection. And then everything works for another minute, and then the headset is disconnected again. Why

Hardware :: USB Headset Causes Crash In Fedora 14 - Resolve It?

Feb 13, 2011

So this is really weird - my Logitech headset that I've been happily using with Fedora since Fedora 10 has suddenly started freaking out Fedora 14. Everything was fine until last night, I was listening to some music and it was getting late so I decided to switch to headphones. It was ok for half an hour then, when I think I (maybe, I can't be sure) knocked the USB plug in its socket, Fedora just froze. No coming back.

After a minute of plugging, unplugging, various attempts to get out of Gnome, etc. I gave up and held down the power button. Machine came back fine, I shrugged thinking it was 'one of those things', plugged in the headset again and *bam* - instant freeze! Weird. It's never done this before.

So I restarted *again* - this time plugged the headset in a different socket, same problem. Fedora froze as soon as I plugged it in.

Looking at the logs, here are some excerpts up to the crashes, in case they help. I think this is the lead-up to the initial crash code...

Again, right after those lines Linux froze and the log just tails off.

What's even weirder here is there doesn't seem to be any consistency, a repeating pattern before the crash - but it is always the instant I plug in my headset.

Hardware :: MSI Bluetooth USB Dongle Connection - Certainly Not Long Enough To Send Or Receive A Single File

May 10, 2011

Problems with Bluetooth. The dongle appears to be working, but then it craps out on me after only a few minutes!

I'm using the blueman-manager GUI to connect to my cell phone. If I load blueman-manager almost immediately after connecting my dongle, I can use it for a few minutes, but only long enough to add my phone, pair it and mark it as trusted. Certainly not long enough to send or receive a single file, though. Eventually and inevitably, the connection breaks, blueman-manager hangs/freezes up, and I start getting errors in dmesg.

Here's all the relevant diagnostic stuff...

Code:

Code:

Code:

I added the MARK myself to separate where the dmesg output stops immediately after plugging in the dongle from what appears after the connection is broken. It's right when that timeout error happens that the connection severs itself, and the error usually repeats itself several times.

Even if I just connect the dongle and not do anything except wait a few minutes, after a few minutes that timeout error will still happen. I'm running fluxbox and I don't believe I have any automounting programs, so there wouldn't be any interference from something like that.

Fedora :: USB Headset Is "feeding Back" Through The Microphone?

Mar 21, 2011

My Logitech USB headset has been with me for *years* (since Fedora 10 and before, when I used to use Windows XP!) and it was always fine, but since I updated to Fedora 14 I can hear my own voice, really loudly, whenever I plug it in. I never had this problem before, I've ignored it for a while, but now it's starting to p*** me off. I can't listen to music without hearing myself breathing in the background! Really annoying...

how to fix this? I suspect it's a PulseAudio problem, but haven't been able to click my way around it...

Fedora :: Several Scp's And A Single Password?

Sep 12, 2009

I want to create a script in bash to allow me to retrieve some files I have in a cluster. Access is through ssh, and the command I use to copy files is scp. The problem here is that when the script is run it asks for the password three times (it is instructed to copy from three different folders).

It doesn't matter if I use

Code:
scp user@server.com:/home/user/FolderA/* .
scp user@server.com:/home/user/FolderB/* .
scp user@server.com:/home/user/FolderC/* .
or

Code: scp user@server.com:/home/user/FolderA/* user@server.com:/home/user/FolderB/* user@server.com:/home/user/FolderC/* it still asks for the password three times. Is there a way I can use scp that asks for the password once?

Fedora Networking :: Limit Outbound TCP Connections To Single IP?

Oct 19, 2009

I'm having a problem that seems to plague a lot of people judging from my research on the web. I have a hosting provider that limits the number of incoming connections to the shared host to 50 per IP.

I have a single IP for outbound connections and I use Squid as a proxy server.

Lately I've tripped across the 50 connection limit frequently - and that's with only 1 user. It seems the problem is related to the performance you can get out of a desktop these days. Its not impossible to have several browsers open with several connections to different sites on the same server - and boom - locked out!

So it occurred to me that there must be some way to limit the number of outbound connections in the kernel - but I've not found it. I did find that Microsoft had been limiting the number of outbound connections in XP to 10 to address the virus problem, and I've found countless hosting complaints and dialog on the subject with no easy solution.

So my question is simply, does anyone know how to limit the number of OUTBOUND connections to a single IP in the kernel?
