Dec 23, 2010I have an intel core i3 laptop, it has 4gig of ram only showing 2 I am also running the x64 bit version of fedora 14.. My graphics will not work correctly. I have tried the intel driver for linux.. It did not work( or i did something wrong) very possible in messing up the install. I would llike to know if there is an update coming out or if i could get a step by step on how to fix, this issue..

Jul 10, 2009I just put Fedora 11 on my Lenovo Thinkpad t400. I selected the integrated (lousy, but Intel (supported)) graphics device in the BIOS, but I really hate the lower performance than the discrete graphics device. However, this device requires fglrx or radeonhd for DRI. RPMFusion has not released an (a)kmod-fglrx, so I can't use that. I have heard radeonhd has some stability issues though, and I don't know how to install. I was wondering how I could completely change my graphics configuration (change chipsets in the BIOS) and get the X Server in Fedora 11 working with the new driver and chipset. Is it a good idea to use radeonhd, or should I wait for the fglrx?
Even then, how would I completely change my graphics configuration so it would work with a different card & driver? I don't want to do a fresh install because I've done a lot of work & customization with the F11.I don't know anything about radeonhd, so any information about this kind of thing would be useful.Finally, should I just suck it up and deal with the Intel graphics? Is anything of this sort really worth my time? (I'm willing to spend quite a bit, trust me!)
Ubuntu :: 10.10 64-bit Shows 3.7GB Out Of 4GB RAM On Laptop With Dedicated Graphics?
Nov 10, 2010I'm accustomed to Ubuntu showing 3.9GB out of 4GB on my desktop. That's completely ordinary and expected: The kernel uses a dozen megs or so, which are not accounted for in the reported memory totals. After truncating, that brings us to 3.9GB.
I was expecting to see the same thing on my Elitebook 8740w, but System Monitor is reporting only 3.7GB instead, using the same version of Ubuntu. free -m shows:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3819 935 2883 0 80 287
-/+ buffers/cache: 567 3252
Swap: 4095 0 4095
That is to say, the total of 3819MB is not missing a mere dozen or so MB but a full 267MB from 4096MB! That's WAY too much to be accounted for by the kernel, so something else is going on!
Please note the following:BIOS shows the full 4GB, and so does lshw.

That is to say, I really do have 4GB RAM, my mobo and BIOS recognize it, I really am running a 64-bit OS, and I really shouldn't have any kind of onboard graphics.
The devil lies in the details though: I SHOULDN'T have any kind of onboard graphics...but the best explanation I can come up with is that 256MB or so are being set aside for that purpose anyway. This is a mobile workstation with dedicated Firepro graphics (based on the Mobility Radeon HD 5800), and it's well beyond the range of laptops that include switchable graphics. However, it has an i5 processor, so I think it's conceivable that the laptop is being tricked into allocating RAM for integrated graphics. This is especially likely considering I get the same i915 error as the threadstarter here, and I have very similar command line output.
Presumed Problem: Long story short, I think Ubuntu is seeing the i5 processor and setting aside 256MB or so for the integrated graphics which it THINKS I have, which are actually totally unavailable to use on this particular laptop. If this is the case, does anyone know how to make it stop doing this, so I can make that memory accessible to the rest of the system?
Update: Interestingly, even Memtest is showing only 3952MB. This may or may not account for the full missing amount, but it obviously counts for a lot. I'm used to Memtest showing I think 4095MB on my desktop, meaning Memtest itself presumably only takes ~1MB. Actually, even on the laptop Memtest says only 1024KB are reserved, so 143MB are totally unaccounted for.

Apr 28, 2010I am using CentOS 5, I have recently installed it on my Dell LATITUDE laptop but the resolution was 800x600. I've tried to put it on 1680x1050 and it worked out well I guess but the graphics had become very slow. For example I have to wait 5 to 6 seconds to scroll from page to page in a pdf file. Minimizing a window takes also a lot of time. I have a NVIDIA card in my PC.

The only reason I went with the older, obsolete version is, honestly, it's the only one that will run on it. That said, I love it and see no reason to go back to Lose-dows full time (I'll still get a Windows machine in order to learn the inner workings of it... thinking of going back to school for a tech job, so the knowledge will do me good).When I bring up various windows (most disturbingly, my system monitor), I get a bizarre glitch. May 1, 2010I told a friend of mine that "Linux" would revitalize his aging laptop I installed - dare I mention this heretical word on this forum, Ubuntu - on a friend's AIRIS laptop some time ago. He is a completely non-technical user so I thought he'd find it easier to use the "compassionate distro for human beings" but my ulterior motive was simply to get the thing up and running without spending hours of unpaid configuration; however, no such luck and hardly a week goes by without a telephone call. One pays for ones sins. The main problem was buggy booting and random freezes. The graphics card is a Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G] and after the latest update it can take several boots and hard resets. I'm really getting fed up with it and am considering installing Debian which is probably what I should have done in the first place. From what I've read about this graphics card, the prognostic may be pessimistic.

Aug 3, 2010My friend has a HP Pavilion dv2699ea (dv2500 series - somehow *shrugs*) that has stopped working. It's a Core2Duo laptop with a Nvidia GPU. The unit is no longer under warranty. Problems first started a few days ago with the laptop showing corrupted graphics in Windows and BSOD'ing after a few minutes of use. I tried booting to an Ubuntu LiveCD which worked for a while before succuming and crashing as well. The freezing/graphics corruption/BSODing does seem somewhat heat related (CPU runs at ~95'c under load) however I believe that if it is heat related, then it's already damaged components inside.
Now the system has corrupted graphics on bootup[1], including booting Ubuntu[2], and neither operating systems will boot at all (Windows can sometimes get logged in before showing a black screen and becoming unresponsive. Ubuntu just looks like [3] after X starts). (See comment below for links.)
The fact the problem occurs both under Linux and Windows says to me this is not a driver issue. I have run Memtest which passed fine and none of this seems HDD related as I managed to get ~30GB of data off the system before it finally gave up the ghost.
She has been using it repeatedly without giving it adequate ventilation for years (i.e. on the bed, or on a pillow), so it's my opinion that the system board has probably warped over years of cooling/heating and that's causing this current problem. If that is the case, then I can buy a replacement system board and fit it myself, saving about £200 over the cost of an out-of-warranty HP repair. Of course, I don't want to make her spend £100 on a replacement part for it to be the wrong thing, hence asking for a second opinion here!
Hopefully I've covered all the bases here. I'm a former IT support guy myself, so I've tried all the dumb stuff (driver updates, examining memory dumps from BSODs [one 'unrecoverable hardware error', three relating to the graphics card], etc).
Ubuntu :: Intel GMA 4500MHD Driver / Drivers For Laptop Graphics Are Not Showing Up?
Nov 18, 2010for some reason the drivers for my laptop graphics are not showing up.
The laptop I have is Acer 1810T. It has intel GMA 4500MHD graphics.
I also have a desktop which has Nvidia 9800GT graphics card and the drivers for that showed up automatically when i went to additional drivers in ubuntu.

Now the issue is that when i go to NVIDIA X Server Settings, its giving me an error message:- " You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. " Error.jpg also tried searching in the forum but it was so confusing, as am Newbie i have no idea where to start.

I have to say that 5.4 Live runs well - UI loads with correct resolution. With 5.5 live I get black screen.
General :: Make PCI-E Graphics Card Visible To Ubuntu When The Motherboard Has Integrated Graphics?
May 2, 2010I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says

There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power.It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector.The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

Jan 26, 2010I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

Nov 9, 2010I used ubuntu for about a year, it was very good but decided to try to learn a little linux so am trying fedora. Well I just got the system installed, and apart from no flash (which I will investigate later) I have an issue with my monitor. It is not detected and has settings as such:
Monitor: Unknown
Resolution: 1280x1024
Refresh rate: 0 Hz
I know my Monitor wich is 19 inches was detected in ubuntu and had a much higher resolution. I'd like to know if this is an all or nothing thing. Meaning if my monitor shows the above settings I am stuck with it or if there is hope. I am at Fedora to lean so I am ready for a fight, but there is just no way I could use the computer as it is...
So where do I begin? Is there any way to manually in some config file put my settings which I am pretty sure I can get from the manufactures site? Or is there some type of hardware detection tool that I can download and run?

Apr 18, 2011Im experiencing choppy graphics on my new F14 install in KDE -- things like scrolling in Firefox, showing/hiding windows, and the equalizer bars in Audacious all being a bit laggy. The card is some kind of onboard intel; the laptop is a Lenovo g550. Here's what lspci says:

Anyway - When I try to get some kind of Desktop Effects, I get the error prompt "Accelerated 3d Graphics is not available." One reason why I think it might be doing this is because I may be using the VESA driver instead of intel, i830, or i810, etc. But again, I dont know how to check this.

May 28, 2010I have a service running as root. This service doesn't have a main graphical screen, but if there is an error it has a pop up box that lets the user know. Of course the user wouldn't be logged into root so how do I get the graphics to show up on a different users desktop?

Aug 18, 2010i previously posted a thread http:[URL].. that was regarding gaming issue, but now i got a bigger issue. i installed Intel 2010Q2 graphics package from [URL].. i first upgraded xorg-x11-server and related packages and installed devel package using yum.. later i compiled and installed kernel 2.6.34 and other packages included on [URL].. i rebooted the system and it showed display driver unknown so, i used system-config-display --reconfig and it detects my mobile 4 intel chipset. and when i reboot, GUI won't load .. when services finish loading screen goes blank and harddisk light blinks at constant intervals and i can't switch from GUI to CUI either using CTRL + ALT + F2 etc [URL].. PS i am able to login into single user and change xorg.conf

Dec 13, 2010Purchased a slightly used T61 Thinkpad via a client of ours at work last week. I've been really happy with it so far, dumped 4GB RAM in it and have Vmware workstation running on it and all is well except the graphics drivers.
According to LSPCI the machine contains the device listed below.

X displays just fine and compiz works out of the box, but I'm only getting around 59 FPS with GLXgears. I do like to play the occasional game and what not, so i'm really hoping to get this increased. I've heard of running Tremulous on this card, so I imagine it can do it.
Is this low for this card?
Fedora :: AMD Ontario And Graphics Performance
May 8, 2011Recently I noticed there are on sale, from several manufacturers, some interesting and inexpensive laptops equipped with AMD's new Ontario C50 processor which for one thing seems to use little power (like the Atom), and the other and more interesting is the fact that it has the graphics embedded.
I am curious if someone here owns one of said laptops and can comment about the performance/compatibility of this Ontario chip, because some of these laptops are such good deals that I am seriously considering at least recommending them. Obviously if I purchase one of those I'd install Fedora on in. Two things puzzle me: is performance very far apart from that of a netbook, and second, how do the graphics perform? Do they use the Catalyst driver as well?

I have the ASUS ENGT240 graphics card ; 1GB GDDR5 powered by NVIDIA GeForce GT240; when I tried to enable desktop effects a message appeared - "Accelerated 3D graphics is not available". How to find particular driver and also the installation procedure?
