I have to locate and display the findme file on an XFS file system but the file is located on a second hard drive. The hard drives area number sda1 and sdb1know to change a directory, you use the cd command but I cannot remember how to do it for another hard drive. I have been trying to do that through searching in "Files & Folders" but it seems that the search is not thorough: it doesn't look for everything. I have an external drive that when it's connected to the computer I would like to search inside of it as well. The "Files & Folders" option does not seem to do that at all.

From what little I know about Linux, I'm guessing that it creates a reference file from which it performs the search when the command is typed. If I'm right this is updated at a given interval or when "updatedb" is used?
As the external hard drive is not always mounted is it best to create another of these reference files and have a different command (e.g. locateext) or something? Or is it best to add the external hard drive's location to the list of files that get added with updatedb.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
How can I retrieve the block number(s) of a certain file in a file system (the blocks the file is using on the harddisc)?
I'm using the gentoo linux based SystemRescueCD, so I got plenty of tools installed which might get that information for me.
I have never used rsync before, only DD. But from what I have been reading, rsync is better becasue it will basically mirror your hard drive, thus being able to run the cloned software from the new hard drive. My problem is I do not know what is the best commands or even the basic commands to use in rsync. I am trying to make an image from a external hard drive to a usb drive. That way my chances of messing up he original software is not as risky becasue I'll just restore the image onto another hard drive. Does anyone know the best script to have rsync make an image file of a hard drive and place it on a usb drive and then restore it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had a drive that kept kernel panic'ing so my data center recommended using the spare hard drive to reinstall OS on, and import the data from the old drive. (they checked the hardware, it wasn't the hardware) The new install is done, and I need to mount the old drive and get backups off it since my data center does not provide management whatsoever.
It's the same OS on both (Cent OS 5.4 32-bit) I'm an advanced user on windows, but linux gets me. I can ssh in, do basic stuff like setup IP ranges and restart services. I normally navigate the box through SFTP so I have a gui. WHM shows me my drives as such

so I'm assuming SDB is my old drive and the drive I need to access. I attempted to follow instructions on

I am trying to create an empty file based on the remaining hard disk space. The problem is that when I create a file that is 1 GB large, the df command shows the remaining space to be only 12 kb smaller than it was before the file was created.

Have a QNAP TS219P+ with two Samsung disks and a WD as extern disk on my Nas. I also have a Dreambox 800 Satellite receiver. Both Linux. I mounted the satellite receiver to my NAS and also a mount to the extern drive. This all works well, until.
I programmed the NAS to go down at midnight and to startup again in the morning. All the mounts are back and working, except the mount from my dreambox to the extern drive. It seems that the dreambox cant locate the extern drive anymore, while the NAS recognice the extern drive well. I first must shut down the whole system, reconnect the extern drive, startup again the NAS, startup again the dreambox reconnect the extern drive and with some luck all is up and working again.
The mounting is done via NFS and this is my line:
Has someone an idea what this mounting problem is?
I have a Ubuntu file server and it makes the oddest sound. I can hear a HD making a "breathing" type sound, like the disc spins up for a moment and then cycles down. It happens on a very regular basis, about every 20 seconds or so. I've run every HD diagnostic I can think of, and I can't figure out what might be causing it.
The system runs Ubuntu 11.04, with a OS HD & 4 discs configured in a RAID5 array.
Is this something I should be worried about? Is there any utility I can run to see why the disc keeps spinning up?

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

But when I did find . -name abc.txt, it traced the file, luckily the file was in the same directory. I am wondering how find was able to search abc.txt and locate not. How these two are behavinb differently? Usually I use locate when I don't know the path to the parent dir.

I found on a website a bash command that would do each file separately:tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]' <input.txt> output.txt but of course involves specifying the input name and output name for each file.I have been trying to do it in a script that would work for all files in the current directory, without having to rename them each time, if that's possible. So far I've got the following, which doesn't work:

However, my web searches cannot locate a way of specifying "each file in current directory" in conjunction with the "tr" command, but also without having to rename the file once converted to lowercase. Is it possible, or would the tr command have to create a new file for each converted file?
I know there are many threads about recovering damaged superblocks. I've spent 3 evenings reading them and trying what they suggest. Invariably the commands do nothing except to report bad or missing superblocks. I've removed the physical disk from the machine and am working with a dd image file (/mnt/image). I can mount what used to be hdc1 and read its files with no problem. I'm trying to recover partions hdc6 and hdc7.$ mmls /mnt/image -b

Upgraded win7 32bit with wubi but it installed the 64bit version of 10.04. Downloaded the 32bit version to an *.iso file. Unable to build a cd with the iso file because of lack of hardware. Is it possible to run the iso file from a hard drive?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 1.5TB Western Digital Caviar Green in a USB 2.0 external setup with an ext4 file system. I'm going to purchase a 2.0TB Western Digital Caviar Green in a USB 2.0 external case, copy the data over and put my 1.5TB in a fire-resistant box in another house. I'm worried about a couple things however:
(1) I'm worried about the long-term viability of _any_ file system years into the future. I've been storing my data on hard drives (instead of CDs, DVDs or BDs) for years now due to their higher reliability than optical disks. However, the file system used in optical disks is UDF which I think has much longer viability into the future. I'm not going to store terabytes of data on optical discs of course, so I'm wondering what I should choose for a hard drive file system. FAT32 or NTFS (due to Windows' 90%+ presence on the desktop, including still being used by Windows 7) may be the best choice, but I much rather have a open source file system, especially one that allows for permissions, timestamps, etc.
(2) As for my 2TB hard drive that I will be using for a while into the future, should I continue to use ext4 (I've had no problem with it thus far), but is there another file system that has better performance when storing and transferring gigs of data?
I am concerned about the LiveCD touching my HDD at all. Is this a factor, such as using HDD space for a swap file? I thought the whole thing ran off my RAM. Anyway here's my specs:
MacBook Pro 500GB:
HFS+ Partition w/Snow Leaopard ~400GB
NTFS Parition with WIndows 7 ~100GB
EFI Partition ~200MB
1) Does this mean I have a "swap file" on there I don't know about? I assume both WIndows and OSX use virtual memory to manage RAM when running in their respective operating systems but does that mean Ubuntu LiveCD will use one of my winows or OSX partition's "swap file"?
2) Or is there an invisiable partition created for LiveCD to use on some unallocated space on my HDD (I don't think there's any but idunno)?
3) How can I be sure the LiveCD is not writing ANY data to the HDD? I don't believe I have ever explicitly created a swap file in either OSX or windows.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

However, when I run an application, say Totem Movie Player, and select Movie/Open I am presented with a Nautilus like file navigation dialog. This is a common dialog to most Gnome applications - probably part of Gnome. Problem is, the dialog does not respect my "single click..." preference.
I have tested this in Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 alpha 2 and CentOS 5.4 - I do not think it is distribution related.
I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhat i really need to know is if there is a way to access a Ubuntu file system on a hard drive from a live CD. When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.

when I load into Ubuntu 11.04 from my USB drive, why can't I access the files on my internal hard drive? I mount the drive but I cannot see any of the music, videos or documents contained on that drive (which is also an Ubuntu 11.04 drive).
