Ubuntu :: Can't Download Torrents On One Laptop

Jan 31, 2011

Torrents work fine on all other machines including on a VM within the affected laptop.

No matter what client I use, nothing ever downloads. For example, right now Transmission says "Downloading from 0 of 0 connected peers - Idle" while WinXP in a virtual machine is downloading at 500 kb/s.

Like I said, it's only one this laptop, with all clients, and it works on a VM.

Fedora Installation :: Download A Installation DVD Of F10 For My New ThinkPad T500 Laptop?

Apr 2, 2009

when I tried to download a installation DVD of F10 for my new thinkPad T500 laptop. The architecture of the processor should be i686 and I downloaded the DVD image Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso. I understand i686 has backward compatability with i386. But i have following questoins:

(1) why we don't have an installation for i686?

(2) If I install the i386 package, do I get performance downgrades?

(3) Also, why the live DVD has this file called F10-i686-Live.iso?

(4) Finally, I always get message like "Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct
/usr/bin/xterm: cannot load font -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1" when I use X application. What's the problem here? BTW, I used Fedora core 8 before I didnt have this problem.

Fedora Networking :: Acer 5516 Laptop ... Get Networking Going With F11?

Sep 8, 2009

I'm having great difficulty with networking on a new Acer 5516 laptop (smolt):Firstly, the NIC card isn't recognized out-of-the-box so I followed Ubuntu forum thread. No luck*
I installed the appropriate Broadcom drivers. No luck*
* However, when I plugged in a USB Ralink DWL-G122 wireless adapter, this worked and, incredibly, the internal Broadcom BCM4312 started to work (see below). Even more bizarre, after turning the laptop off and unplugging the power, upon reboot with the Ralink adapter plugged in, the NIC was on and I did a yum update through eth0.

Sadly, none of the laptops internal networking works unless the Ralink adapter is plugged in. In fact, the gnome desktop is almost unworkable and unresponsive without the Ralink adapter up. Further, I sure that this was the reason the initial F11 install was frustrating with periodic unresponsiveness.

I've tried installing both F11 386 and x64 and have booted with a F10 live USB with no luck either.

I'm contemplating trying Ubuntu next but really would like to know if someone has been successful with Fedora.

Networking :: Download Is So Slow / Why Is So - Increse It?

Jun 27, 2010

I'm having a major dilemma here. Up until about a week ago, my download speed was at a rather nice 160-180KB/s, and I was rather happy with that. But, it slowed down. A lot. now my max d/l speed is about 40KB/s. I download stuff a lot, so having this slow of a connection is torture for me. Oh, and on internetfrog.com on the speed test, it says my d/l speed is supposed to be about 321KB/s and for some reason it can't even detect my upload speed. Strange. Any ideas about it?

Networking :: Throttled Download Speeds

Apr 19, 2011

I have had a fairly perplexing problem with my Lubuntu Maverick installation on my laptop for the past few weeks. My laptop is connected to a DSL-based LAN via 100mbps Ethernet - pretty typical. Usually, the download speed from most websites tends to be around 340-350kb/s. However, its Ethernet connection seems to be having some strange hiccups. The speed starts out at normal ranges, but after about 5-10 minutes of internet use through any means (be it loading normal web pages, streaming video, downloading a file via a browser, or even other uses such as downloading a torrent using Transmission, or even a command line application such as apt, aptitude or wget, etc), the speed suddenly drops to around 40kb/s and will not raise again.

Once this happens, the drop is seen across the board. Again, once it happens, the speed of everything that accesses the internet is affected. Web pages load slowly, all downloads will only operate at a maximum of 40kb/s, whether it is from any browser, or wget in a terminal. The speed stayed slow until I restarted, which would give me another 5-10 minutes. My troubleshooting attempts yielded some very strange results, which I will relate here:.......

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot SSH To The Laptop

Jul 3, 2010

I have a laptop at home (A) and a PC in my office (B). I can SSH from A to B but not from B to A. Both A and B run Ubuntu 9.10 and have openssh-server installed. My laptop at home (A) is behind a router and I read somewhere that this could be the reason why my connection times out when I try ssh my_username_on_my_laptop@the_WAN_ip_address_of_my_ router.

The error I get is "ssh: connection to host the_WAN_ip_address_of_my_router port 22: Connection timed out". Therefore, I logged into my router and enabled the service "SSH(TCP/UDP:22)", typed my DHCP gateway ip address (also the DNS proxy ip address) into the entry for the LAN server ip address and made sure that the remote ip address is the_WAN_ip_address_of_my_router.

I'm sure I don't know the meaning of what I just wrote. I just looked that stuff up after having logged into the ip address of my router. A first question I have is whether I was supposed to use my personal ip address that I have inside the network at home (figured it out by staring at the output of ifconfig) in place of the DHCP gateway ip address (also the DNS proxy ip address) when filling out the LAN server ip address.

Then, of course, I wonder what is still going wrong. Sitting at B, I'm able to ping the_WAN_ip_address_of_my_router but I cannot ssh into my laptop (A) that is behind the router. The router allows me to change about 1000 settings but I have no clue what to do with them.

The following seems important in this context too: As I already said, I can ssh from A to B but not the other way round. Now, assume I change settings in the router. Can I test the usefulness of these settings by ssh-ing into B (from A), from which I then try to ssh into A (from B). Does this circular ssh-ing make sense?

Fedora Networking :: Broken Internet - Cant Download Anything To Try

Sep 8, 2010

I've used UNIX a bit but i've always hugged windows a lot. I wanted to explore a bit before I started my MSc next term so I thought I'd try it out. A friend recommended fedora, so here I am! The main problem is, my USB wireless doesnt work at all and my router is in the kitchen so I cant really stretch an ethernet cord. I'm posting this via my laptop, so I cant really copy and paste a lot of logs. My device is a Belkin USB F6D4050 v2, comes up in lsusb as 050d:935b! Now I spent all day yesterday trying to get this work, i've read so many tutorials and threads about getting it fixed in the end I had altered so much I got a bit fed up and reinstalled to try again. I am using the drivers off the belkin cd (XP2K/rt2870.inf) so that should be fine.

First of all, I run ndiswrapper -i ../rt2870.inf which works fine, I check with ndiswrapper -l and it says 050d:935b is installed fine. I then do ndiswrapper -m, which adds the alias and makes a conf file. I then do -ma and -mi for the heck of it! Now I tried to do modprobe ndiswrapper, and i got an error that the module is not installed. A few searches later I found out that doing depmod -a, fixes this. So modprobe works fine and modinfo ndiswrapper comes up with the info......
